Farther Along in a Pregnancy than You Thought?

Hi,

I'm going to my OB for my first visit next week and hopefully bullying them into an ultrasound, but I'm just curious. :) I've estimated my due date as March 9th, which assumes I have regular 28 day cycles. At that rate I am barely 4 weeks pregnant. Last month I had very strong pregnancy symptoms and was shocked when I had a period, but it came after a 26 day cycle and lasted about 4 days. Previously my "cycles" have ranged from 34 days to 42 days and my periods had been lasting as long as 14 days and been quite heavy. (I have not been regular since I weaned my youngest child last September.) I had negative pregnancy tests last month and a negative test once this month when I tested really early before having positive ones, but part of me wonders if I am farther along than 4 weeks. I have lost a pound or so from my regular weight but my pants are really tight on the waist. It could be bloating or in my head, but I'm just curious if anyone else had negative tests and ended up a month farther along than they thought, or had several days of bleeding instead of a period during pregnancy. I'm imagining it's in my head, but I like other people's stories, too. :)

(My doctor's office does not have ultrasound and does not order early ultrasounds unless there are concerns or if they are not sure about the due date. And TF, I don't think it is a state issue, but my doctor does not usually order anything that is not routine or needed. I used the word "bully" lightly, meaning that I will ask because I've been irregular. I adore my doctor and she has delivered my two older boys. Even my FIL raves about her!)

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I know for a fact that I can't be farther along than I am (due date march 6th) b/c I miscarried last month. I am almost 5 weeks along now but have the same insane symptoms of extreme hunger, fatigue, etc. I have never felt symptoms this strong or this early before either. My pants are tight too. :) Congrats!

Not sure about length of pregnancy but IMO...if I had to bully my ob into doing anything I would look for a new ob. My ob that I had when I was pregnant had an old ultrasound machine that she would use all the time. For some reason my son would hide from the vital monitor every visit so she would jsut take me in the other room to do an ultrasound to see how everything was going. Not sure how it works in NY but I have had many friends get ultrasounds done at their regular ob appointments.

Congrats on the new bundle of joy!!!

They will usually do an internal ultra sound with the wand at 8 weeks, and that point they will be able to tell you if you are measuring farther along than you think.

Counting from the first day of my last period, I should be 3.5 weeks FURTHER along than what the ultrasound has told us. It really just all depends on what the babys measurments are on that 1st ultrasound for them to determine your due date. And yes, I have heard of getting negative pregnancy tests eventhough you ARE pregnant, although it has not happened to me.

I understand what you are saying. My OB also does not order anything not considered routine. I can tell you that with my 2nd and 3rd pregnancy, I told my OB that my last period was very irregular/almost nonexistent and therefore I could not verify the first day of my last period and she ordered a vaginal ultrasound in order to be sure. Just say you do not know and you should get one. Both times I thought I HAD to be further along, but I wasn't.

You show earlier with 3rd preg so that might be the reason. I go to health dept and they could not see me till I was 16 weeks , that's when I got my u/s. I know waiting is hard, hang in there:)

Don't worry about having an exact due date now. Between now and when you finally deliver your doctor may order a few ultra sounds that may change the date anyway. My daughter is 3 months along and has had to have several ultra sounds due to problems she is having and each time she is given a different due date. Due dates are only an approximate date the baby is expected to be born. In actuality, on average, they can be born anywhere from 2 weeks before to 2 weeks after your due date. Bottom line is, as you get closer to delivery the doctor will zero in on a more exact date and the baby may still be early or late!

If you may only be four weeks along you do not want an ultrasound so early. I had one that ended up being at 5 weeks and raised more questions about my pregnancy than it answered. An anxious week and a half later and I had a perfectly normal ultrasound. There is a period of time when the technology can't detect anything. Wait until you think you are 8 weeks and then there will definitely be something to measure and you'll know find out how far along you are then.

Just be patient. I guess anything is possible and that you could be further
along, but I would not count on that. Usually ultrasounds are not done
until 8 weeks.
