Hi L.,

Check with your hubby's employer to see if he qualifies. Each state is different and I know CA has paid family leave for up to 12 weeks. If paid, I think it's just 6 weeks. Make sure to find out for sure and don't take my word for it.

And congrats on your little one. Hope all goes well :)

Actually, as far as I understand it is not guarenteed paid. The family Medical Leave act covers any person 12 weeks leave in bussiness' larger than, i think 150 employees. Look it up online. It is called The Family Medical Leave Act.

YES! My husband took it when his work was on hiatus during the holidays. It's an awesome benefit ALL Dad's should take advantage of. It works the same as it does for you. They pay based on his previous wages earned in a set calendar time frame. It was a huge help to us - and gave Daddy some real quality time with the baby. He has up to 12 months to take it, so if he can't take it now, he has the whole year to. Good luck and I hope your little one comes tomorrow - 7th may be your lucky day!

Just to reinforce what has already been said look up the information online!!!!
My husband works for the county and he took off about 8 weeks of paid time off, but it was ALL vacation time he had saved up!!!! State law guarantess you leave of 12 weeks to care for a sick family member (wife just had c-section covered 2 weeks, and otherwise it's 6 weeks for baby bonding), but the state does not guarantee PAIDE TIME LEAVE!!!! Only that your job is there for you to return to, or a similar position with the same pay if you must take time off to care for a sick immediate family member.

if you live in the state of california then yes your husband can get paid family leave which is differnt then fmla, fmla is job protected and he can get 12 weeks of unpaid time off, the paid family leave he can get 6 weeks of paid time off however it is NOT job protected, so if he takes it he IS risking the possibility of not having a job any longer when he returns. If he want to take the time off he needs to go to his emplyer and request a paid time off form and mail it to the address that is provided on the form, the other issue is that paid family leave is backed up so it could take up to 4 weeks to recieve his first check from the state. If he has vacation time, paid family leave will require him to use that before he can be approved for paid family leave.

I used FMLA which dad is entitled to also. You use your leave or sick time first, then leave without pay. While I was on leave without pay, I paid COBRA at a reduced rate.

You get the paperwork from the employer and take it to the doctor to complete. Turn the paperwork back in to your HR clerk.

Yes, look it up on line for details.
