False Negative Pregnancy Test?? - Baltimore,MD

I was wondering if anyone has ever gotten a false negative on a pregnancy test? I got my IUD taken out at the end of August, 4 days later I got my period on time. I was due for my period yesterday, and still have not gotten it, and I am usually very regular, always have been. I took a test this morning, and it was negative (no signs of the 2nd pink like at all). I know I may be a little irregular since this is my first full cycle after getting the IUD out....but was hoping the pregnancy test was wrong. I felt PMS'y last week - sore boobs, bloated...but now I don't at all. The last time I was pregnant, I took a test the day before I was due, and it was positive, but that could be b/c we had to use invitro, which worked :) I'm really hoping it happens naturally this time around. So, anyone ever been pregnant, but the pregnancy test shows your not?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well....I got my period last night. It must have just been my body figuring out its full first cycle since my IUD was taken out. Thank you for everyone who shared their experience with me, I will keep it all in mind the next time I think I'm pregnant.

When I was pregnant with my first son, I had 3 tests (each taken about a week apart AFTER my missed period) that all came out negative. Finally the 4th one showed a positive result.

I believe that false negatives are far more common than false positives. You might want to wait a day or 2 and try again!

There is difference between a false negative and taking a pregnancy test too early for the hormone levels to have built up.

A negative pregnancy test when you take it less than 10 days past ovulation (depending on the sensitivity of the test) is common.

Wait a week. If you haven't gotten your period, retest.

With my 19 year old, I had been told for 8 weeks that it was negative. FINALLY I went in for a papsmear and they confirmed his little heartbeat with an ultrasound saying I was 8 weeks. Even that day my test came back negative.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I took three tests that came back negative, and before I knew it I was five months pregnant. Go get a blood test, they are the only sure way to know.

Highly, HIghly unlikely that your pregnancy test is a 'false' negative - it's just negative. I work in the ER & we have to check all 'females of child bearing age' (up to 60+) before they have any x-rays or ct's done. We use the urine test and all it takes is 3 drops of urine and it can be done at any time of day. The ones for home use direct you to do it in the morning because you've held your bladder for 6-8+ hours and the hormone is more plentiful in the urine at that point. The possibility of having a false test reading is like 1 in 1000, maybe more. These tests are very sensitive.
I understand your concern and I speak from personal experience also. With my first pregnancy, my husband asked me to take the test 4, FOUR! times. Just to be sure according to him. Well, it was positive all four times; he did the math and to get a false positive after 4 consecutive times was a 1 in a million chance it was wrong.
Soooo, your test is probably correct but your body is on the hormone swing. I have an IUD also and, depending on which one, fertility (normal viable egg release) returns with in 4 months. DON'T SWEAT IT HONEY! Getting pregnant is such a wonderful thing but enjoy your time with your husband first; that makes the results all the more better. And you are more likely to get pregnant is you AREN'T STRESSED about it!
Good luck and many blessings :)

I have had a falso positive too. I took it the day that I was suppose to get my period & the day after & it was negative. I waited another day or two & took it again & it was positive. Good luck

I've had a false negative in the past, so if you really can't wait a little longer, go to your doctor and let them know you think you're pregnant. Ask them to do a blood test.

Hi!
I've always been pretty regular so when I was a day late I took a home test and the "line" was VERY faint and I thought I was making myself see the slightest hint of a line so I went to a clinic to take a free test. That test was negative. I then took another test the next day because I was really hoping to be pregnant and that test was positive. I was so confused and the doctor wouldn't see me until I was technically 8 weeks pregnant. I suggest you find some place that will do a bloodtest to know for sure.

Hi K.,

I had several false negatives with each of my pregnancies. I was pretty sure I was pregnant, so I just kept buying more tests until they agreed! I think false negatives are pretty common, particularly when you test within a week of your missed period and/or ovulate late in your cycle. Maybe wait a few days and try again. Good luck!

Just another thought - the PMSy feel and the sore boobs could be a sign of ovulation, not the immediate precusor to your period. I remember being upset when approximately 2wks after my first period after coming off the pill, I felt like I was about to have my period again. My friend pointed out, "you're probably ovulating." It was kind of like...."oh yeah, that's what it feels like!" I had forgotten since I had suppressed ovulation for so long. Since we now have all the family we want, and my dear husband got snipped, I now usually have this lovely feeling 2x a month. Women are truly the stronger sex! Good luck expanding your family further!

i agree with the responses. just wait a week. you're cycle may have been regular before but having the iud removed could have messed that i. i had negative results for 2 weeks after i was "supposed" to have my cycle. turns out that i had 45 day cycle that time around. your cycle may be off, so if you're trying to get pregnant i wouldn't stop trying this month yet either.

K.,
I would try using a test that says pregnant or not pregnant. That helped me a lot, so your not trying to figure out if there is a line or not.

I am very regular and when I was late, I took the test and it was negative. A week later w/still no period, I took a test again and it was postive. However the pregnancy ended up being a tubical pregnancy. I hope everything works out for you.

Hi K.,

With my second pregnancy I had two false pregnancy tests! I kept telling my husband I was pregnant and he thought I was crazy. The nagging feeling that I was actually pregnant wouldn't go away so I ended up waiting a few days and then finally went out and purchased a new box of pregnancy tests. Third time was a charm and I came up with a positive test result. In the back of my mind I've always wondered if the first box of tests might have been defective. It might be worth a shot to go out and get yourself a brand new box. Good luck!

I am happy to report that the first pregnancy test I took when I was pregnant, came up negative, and the second one I took a few days later was positive. I don't know why it came up negative, but maybe the hormone wasn't strong enough yet. I have heard that it helps to take the test first thing in the morning so that your hormone levels are at their highest. I wish you good fertility!

With my first child I had false tests not only from home test, but from the doctors as well. I was so sure something was wrong. I must have had at least 6 tests tell me I was NOT pregnant. It all came to a head when one day at work instead of "tossing my cookies" like I had been doing, I passed out. My boss told me to go to the doctors and not come back til I found out what was wrong with me! I went home and did a pregnancy test that evening. It said I WAS pregnant. Two days later my doctor did an exame and said, "well, you are about 4 months pregnant."
So, it's very possible you can be pregnant and get a false negative result. It happened to me several times.
Best of luck to you.

I really don't have an answer to your question I just wanted to wish you lots of luck getting pregnant without having to do IVF again. I also have an IVF baby & debating on whether to try again or not. My doctor told me I will not be able to get pregnant on my own. I do not know if I can handle the let down of it not taking. (I had to do 2 rounds before I got pregnant)

I agree with previous post that said you should wait a week and test again if your period doesn't show up. Make sure you are using one of the more sensitive tests. http://peeonastick.com/ has a lot of good information about all the different pregnancy tests. Good luck!
