I'm sure many of you can relate to my issue. It has gotten to the point where I need to do something about the hairs on my chinny chin chin (and my upper lip too). My hair is light in color, so I have been able to put it off for as long as I have, but the time has come to take care of it. I am torn as to have it waxed or use a hair removal cream found at the drug store. Which do you prefer?

I am very fair skinned and have dark, coarse hair, like a man. I can't even think about waxing - walking around in public while growing out my hair is not an option.

When I was young and there wasn't much, I would pluck. Now, I shave in the shower every morning. Quick and inexpensive!

Dear L. H:

You do not want to cut or cream away the hair. This will cause more problems elsewhere.

You are having androgen problem where you estrogen is converting to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is causing your hair issues.

The chin and lip area on the face responds to hormone changes just like it does to teens getting acne.

The way you can correct this internally is by stopping the DHT production. Too much DHT will also make you lose your hair as it continues to increase.

The best way to resolve the problem permanently is the following:

Dim Palmetto Prostate - 60 SG: By ARG: 2 capsules twice a day before meals. This is usually used for men who have prostate problems and losing hair but the same reason is for women that grow hair in the wrong places.

This formula has the 3 most active ingredients in it to solve the problem which are Saw Palmetto, Pumpkin Seed oil and Zinc.

If you can't find the formula go to: http://www.healingedge.net/store/more_all_dim_p.html

Taking them separately will not do as good of a job and you also need the DIM that is in this formula.

You will see changes in 4 to 6 weeks.

Good Luck

lookup "welltellme.com " and do a search for for sugaring recipies. Sugaring isnt as hot as wax, so it doesnt burn and scar the skin like wax can. the longer you do it the finer the hair grows back. There is a lady on there , username lewisquiverfull, who does it professionally and has good ideas of how to do it at home.

Your increased hair can be causes or made worse by too much estrogens. Soy is a big one, it is in almost everything. breads (soya flour)ice cream, chkn nuggets, hot dogs..any word in the ingredients that has SOY as part of it- has soy in it. BHT added to cereal boxes is estrogenic. Parabens found in lotions and hygene products, Floride, and chlorine in tap water and pools is estrogenic. Birth control pills, flaxseed oil, rapeseed oil, canola oil, tea tree lavendar soap, clover, red raspberry tea, cohosh and any estrogen product to help relieve menopause symptoms- all screw up estrogen levels and make them too high, resulting in unapposed estrogen. The progesterone levels are not high enough to oppose the estrogen.

Increased androgens(testosterone) can be a factor, and also unapposed estrogen. Ive read that both of these are caused by a progesterone deficiency. Natural progesterone cream with yams, rubbed on the skin on your hand once a day, can help with unopposed estrogen and too much testoterone.

Or you could see an endocrinologist to help pinpoint the increase in hair. they would do blood tests, maybe ct scans of adrenal glands, and ultrsounds for tumors on ovaries.

Hi L.,

Thanks for asking this question! I have light hair and have been avoiding this, too, but my chin hairs are out of control. While I don't have a solution, I can tell you what I've tried and why it doesn't work for me...

I tried waxing -- maybe it's because I have sensitive skin, but my chin & neck were red, swollen and broken out for 3 days after waxing. I won't be doing that again!

I tried the Smooth Away pads -- they work great on peach fuzz, but it took much more rubbing to get my course hairs to "smooth away," which actually made me bleed. Yes, it looked like I was an 8-year-old boy trying out his father's razor! Smooth away pads are basically really fine sandpaper, so you rub away your skin with the hair as you keep working on those coarse ones! AND even once they're gone, they're only gone to the surface, so the next day you have stubble, just as if you'd shaved.

A friend of mine tells me she has a little device that's essentially an electric razor she uses every morning. I may go that route, but haven't looked into finding one yet.

Thanks again for asking -- I'm looking forward to reading your responses!

Greetings L., I have white hair, and am only 57. I started pulling the hairs out and not only was it painful but time consuming. I found that I could goto he local beauty school and have it done rather cheaply. I always like a good facial as well. Nana G

i use the wax strips i get at the drug store. 1st, you rub the strips in your hands to warm up the wax on them. 2nd, you put the strips on your facial hair and 3rd, you pull the strip off like a bandaid. not all of the hair comes off but what stays on is pulled up straight and stiff from the wax and super easy to pluck. it's easy to do and i try to do it every saturday morning. the salon waxing is better but if you do the wax strips once a week you won't have a facial hair problem and they are sooooo convenient compared to getting yourself to a salon.

HI L.-
NEITHER! There is another option. I did not believe it myself, but my sister has a mustache and chin hair, and though she has tried everything, it has only gotten thicker and darker and worse.
We went to the home and garden show, and we saw them peddling these things that have been on infomercials- smoothe away. It really does work, and it DOES NOT hurt, burn, or smell, and there is no waiting to wash, pulling out of hair, etc. The girl warned us it that your hair would grow back normally, as if shaving, for the first few times- but she uses it (we checked!) and her hair grows in thinner and lighter each time now. My sister let her test it on her, and was sold in one sitting.
Here is the website- just order from home. If you buy it in the stores or at the mall, it costs $20-$30, but the website- when I went to leave it, offered me double for $9.99 plus shipping, which is a fantastic deal!
I reccommend it.
I hope this helps! Good luck!

This is the 2nd window with the cheaper deal- It's still $6.99 s + h, but my sister paid $32 in person for half of what they are offering. https://www.getsmoothaway.com/exit/exit_discount.asp?refc...

ah..the store stuff works good....but usually your face is real irritated for a while even though you put moisturizers on it etc....but for as low as 5 buck to 15 bucks you can have a professional do it..and if you have hte extra time and money get a well deserved facial...Those are the best!

I sometimes pluck or shave mine. However, occasionally, I go get them waxed. Last time I went, she also waxed the sides of my face. It's just getting worse. For me, I prefer the waxing... quick & easy.

I have the same problem. I used to wax. Then to save money, I used a home wax kit and also tried some creams. They didn't work as well as the waxing. I returned to waxing at the salon, but then discovered threading. It is less expensive and way less environmental waste. I think it even lasts longer than waxing too. Good luck.

I understand completely. I have very light hair but the hair around my lip is just a bit too much. I go to a salon and the do a process called "sugaring". It is similar to waxing but a better compound. The salon is called Cezanne and is in East Sac on H Street. Good luck.

Have you heard of threading? I have really sensitive skin, so I can't do waxing, but I can get threaded. It lasts the same amount of time as waxing, but you don't ever break out. Its like $20 for your whole face (even eyebrows!)

I prefer bleaching. That way you don't have to deal with regrowth ingrowns or other issues. You can also have it threaded if you are set on having it removed. Bleaching works great for me. Less painful and no one can see it after I'm done. But if your dark skinned it wont look right. As for threading I think there are some places at the mall that do it... And there is a a place at Santana row that does it too. Good luck!

Hi L.,

My favorite way to get rid of those unsightly is electrolysis. I had a lot of dark hairs grow in after my pregnancy with my son. I am happy that I no longer have to deal with those hairs.

Waxing does pull on the skin and can cause damage. I wish I would have known that when I was younger.

I use facial hair bleach that you can get at a beauty supply store (like Sally's). I prefer bleach because it's quick & painless!!

L.,

Im a licensed esthetician so I've have some knowledge on this one. I personally would wax it, it last the longest and is quick and easy. If you have never waxed before it is painful, especially the upper lip but haveing a hairless upper lip and chin is well worth it. You may be a little red and sore but it will go away. I always tell my clients to stay out of the sun and not to do anything to make them sweat right after waxing. Your pores will open and both of those things can irritate your skin, putting make up on right after is also not reccommended. I also think that you should go to a place that specializes in waxing not a nail salon that does waxing. Finally the benefit of waxing over hair removal creams is that the creams just dissolve the hair at the base of the hair where as waxing removed it from the root which makes for more time with no hair :o)Hope that helps.
