Facial Advice for a "Tweenager"

Hi Ladies,

I've noticed quite a bit lately that my nine year old daughter is showing signs that it is time for her to practice some good facial skin care. She will occasionally develop little pimples or blackheads around her nose and on her forehead. It's hard for me to believe and accept that my little girl is growing up! LOL Anyway, I think it's time for me to find her a good cleanser and maybe moisturizer since the air is about to get very cold and brutal with the winter. If any of you have any suggestions on something that works good on young skin and would be easy for her to use on her own in the shower, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies for some great suggestions. I am a bit familiar with the Velocity products (haven't used them but were aware they existed). I just ordered my daughter a fullsize set of the cleanser and moisturizer off Ebay for only $13 so we'll see if that helps her get started on good face hygeine. I'll keep the other suggestions in mind if the Velocity doesn't work good for her. Thanks again!

I would recommend Beyore to anyone. I used to have a line across my nose that always got blackheads in. I used it a few times and it helped amazingly. It pulls out the blackheads and puts in some kind of medication that helps the pore heal so you wono't get black heads as often. I used it for 2 yrs, and to this day I still don't have to worry about black heads coming in on my nose.

You will think that I am crazy, but I have severly dry skin, and my twelve year old daughter has oily. Both conditions cause breakouts. We discovered that olive oil is wonderful as both a cleanser and a moisturizer. You can have her smear some all over her face before getting into the shower, and rinse off with warm water, or she can smear it on, then remove it with a kleenex. Also, she can wear it as a mask about once a week by smearing quite a bit on her face, then sleeping with it on (put a towel over her pillows to protect the pillows). When she wakes up in the morning, she can wash it off in the shower, and her skin will be beautiful and soft. We have been using olive oil to tame frizzy hair, shave legs (keeps legs moist), and as an eye makeup remover.

There are many products out there for the problem you are describing. I have an 11 year old who has had to wash her face with products when she turned 9 for because of the same issues. We have tried many products and most really dried out here skin. We began to use an Avon product geared towards younger skin and eliminates blackheads. But she does have to use moisterizer everyday too. She uses the Clearskin line, but some of the Avon Solutions products work for her as well. Check out my website www.youravon.com/A. morales or email me with any other questions. Even if you do not get Avon, teach her good skin care treatment, that will last a lifetime. Also beware of high priced supplies as they do not always work any better than more affordable products.

Check out deborahscollection.com.

Products are all pharmaceutical-grade aloe - which is a natural humectant so is a great moisturizer. I started my daughter on the products when she was a young teenager and I just love them. I'm a consultant so if you see anything you'd like to try, please email me and I'll be happy to help! Good luck! ____@____.com

I really love the St. Ives facial scrubs in the shower, and they have a version for sensitive skin that would probably be mild enough for your daughter and they also have an oil free moisturizer. I've been using this brand since I was a teen and I've tried many others and always come back to these. They are cheap, easy, and they work. You can get them in any grocery store, or pharmacy. Good luck.

I would suggest that you watch her process for cleaning her face. If it is just in the shower, tell her to use a clean washcloth and pay special attention to these areas to make sure they are as clean as the rest of her face. Give her a few days to see if this helps. My 10 yr old son had the same problem on and around his nose, and now he is ok. He was just not cleaning off enough of the oils in the little corners around his nose. Now he is fine. I did have to use a little dab of the acne gel stuff from walmart (store brand) one time, but I think that is not too good to use on them this young. I'm not sure what to recommend for a younger tween, but try clean & clear daily skin cleanser to exfoliate and get the corners on her face, which I use. I've always used oil of olay for sensitive skin in my house, when needed. Just look for whatever that is non-comedigenic (won't clog pores).

Good luck

G., I had horrible skin as younger teenager and here is the thing...everyone's skin reacts differently to every product. My suggestions is to make sure she drinks a LOT of water and try different cleansers until she finds the one that works for her. Visiting a dermatologist is a great idea too.

My daughter's are older and they use the Sensitive Skin - facial care products by BeautiControl (which I sell) and whatever they see in the Teen magazines that says it is "the" product for pimples. The latter are always passing trends, but they're teens and they have to learn themselves.

You can use a wide variety of products, and whatever she will use daily is the best. However, hormone changes can cause pimples too and that's from the inside, so eating well, sleeping etc will help with that.

On the outside, she needs to keep her face clean with a gentle cleanser (not soap) and exfoliate her face once a week, with a gentle scrub (like St. Ives Apricot Scrub or BeautiControl's scrub). The difference in products is the scent, and quality, and price.

Don't dry her face out, like mine want to do, they see a pimple and want all the oil stopped on their faces, which really makes things worse.

When I was a little older than her, I read all about natural beauty and made my own. My 15 yr old daughter just did this a month or so ago, and it's pretty expensive. And messy. She didn't clean up after she made her papaya, milk, honey facial stuff. But it was a fun way to learn to care for your skin.

Good luck!

My 12 yr old uses Clinique Mild cleanser and moisturizers. She does not have a breakout issue but when she turned 12 last year, I did take her to the dermotologist (Allen Menter) so she could hear first hand the importance of taking care of her skin. I also had a rep from Clinique show her some things to do for her face.

Sometimes, words of advice from someone other than mom are better absorbed by the girls teen brain.

Other products which are very good are the Neutragena line, Cetaphil, Purpose soap (Dr. recommended).

She needs to try out different products to see what works best for her. We went through at least 10 deoderants before my daughter found one she likes for sensitive skin.

Hope that helps!
Susan

Dermatologists recommend soaps like Dove with a good Ph Balance and a light moisturizer like Oil of Olay. I'd not use anything fancy or filled with too much stuff this soon. Skin is very important, as you know.
Talk to her pediatrician.
Good luck.

I have found that the Mary Kay product Velocity skin care is great for teenagers. It can carry them to the early 20's and it looks trendy and absorbs oil, but doesn't have chemicals that is too harsh for their skin like other brands. Additionally, for my family who need it, we add the Clarifying Mask 2 X per week to clean out the pores! Bonus is that the three products together only cost $36 and last between 3 to 6 months (depending on use).

This Mary Kay skin care line can be purchased only through an authorized representative. Try going to my friends website....www.marykay.com/wendywalden

Good luck!

Hi G.! I am an Arbonne Consultant and have a 10 year old son. I noticed that he was having it seemed like some clogged pores, just some bumps on his cheeks, not really pimples. So I started him on our skin care line for young adults and for sensitive skin and I am really seeing a difference. Arbonnes products do not have any mineral oil them so they are very consentrated and do not clog the pores. I don't know if you have something already but if you would be interested in trying something different I would be happy to talk with you about it and send you some samples for your daughter to try. I would love to hear from you.

When I was a teenager, I suffered from breakouts regularly. The only thing that worked for me at the time was Neutrogena's Oil Free Acne Wash.
You can learn more about it at this link:
http://www.neutrogena.com/ProductsDetails_18.asp?lProduct...

There are many more options now for severe break outs. I would probably have used ProActive if they had it when I was a teen.

However, it sounds like she just has black heads and the occassional pimple(s)...something milder may be more appropriate.

Now I alternate between Dove moisture bar (for sensitive skin which is fragrance free) and Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub with soy. I still have a blemish every now and then, but this keeps my skin healthy and clear. I also recommend the moisturizer Moisturel. My dermatologist recommended it. See this link:http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid=53759...

It is important to teach her not only to wash her face in the morning, but to wash it at night as well. This will help her to start the practice of always washing her face before bed when she is older and remove makeup which can clog pores, age skin and cause further break outs. Exfoliating is important too, but she should choose a scrub that has a small bead (not coarse like a body scrub).

Also a good dermatologist or facialist could give her a good facial (which might be a fun spa day for the two of you) to get rid of the blackheads (those are hard to get rid of).

Good luck!

Remember how natural and wonderful aloe vera is? Now there's a simple, natural, in-expensive, yet very effective aloe facial scrub called Forever Aloe Scub. Put it on, rinse it off.
