I swore I would never have an account. Well, now that school has started for my little guy I have realized I do indeed need one. The school sends out most of its notices through their facebook account and the PTO is all about facebook too. So I created an account today but I am sooo lost. Can someone give me the basics to it? I put all my security settings to "Friends Only". Will that affect any updates the school puts out? Do I get notices that the school has an update? I only plan on using the account for school affilated stuff; so I don't want any pics or anything like that. I don't think I need to "chat" do I?

Ok - any info you guys can give on using facebook the bare minimum I would appreciate. thanks!

You need to find the page that is created for your school and like that. Or it may be a group page. You may need to request to be added. Once you belong to that page the info will come through your homepage. You'll figure it out. It's pretty easy after a few days.

I am not a facebook fan either. I signed up because my daughter was putting her baby's pictures on her account and I wanted to see my granddaughter! (and because I wanted to see what my high school son and his friends were talking about.)

I also have my security settings to "friends only" and am very choosy about who I put on my friends list. Most of them are family. (In fact, I wish facebook had a setting for "family only".)

If you have an account, you should be able to check the facebook pages for the school and the PTO by going to those pages. If you find and click the "like" button, or join the facebook group (it depends on how they set it up), then you can just go to your own page and it will tell you what has bee said on the school and PTO pages.

You should not need to "chat".

Facebook does have an annoying way of trying to get you to increase your time with them. (I think) They are constantly saying things like "these are friends of your friends. Do you want to "friend" them too?"

Make sure the school and your child's parents are on your friends list. Anything they put out there will pop up on your account like an RSS feed. Look at it like the CNN news ticker line at the bottom of the screen.

You have to "Like" the schools page to get their updates. Once you do this, no matter what your account settings, you will see what they have posted.

Just be prepared for the random adds (people who add anyone, even if they have no clue who they are) and old friends, acquaintances, etc. to start adding you. If you don't want anything to do with the old friends then just email them through Facebook and explain that your page is strictly for your child's school and, if you want to keep in contact, give them your email address.

*hugs*
