It's a clogged tear duct. Squirt a little breast milk in the eye and let it sit for a bit then wipe it off with a clean cotton ball. It will clear up eventually.

It doesn't sound like anything I've seen in my boys when they were newborns. It could be an eye infection...I'd have his doctor take a look at it.

The difference between pink eye and a blocked tear duct is stickiness/greenness (pink eye). With pink eye, the eye will literally be glued shut due to the stickiness of the goop, so to speak. I'm personally very susceptible and have experienced many times. At a month old, the more likely cause is a blocked duct. Seeing a doc would rule out the blocked tear duct, but you can probably wait a day to see if symptoms worsen. To unblock a tear duct will likely take a few weeks and can recur. What I would do is each time I changed a diaper and had them laying flat, I would use a warm compress on the eye for about 30 seconds. Then with the knuckle of your 1st finger, gently press from the side of the nose and move slightly inward toward the duct. Repeat this 3x/day for about 2 weeks even if symptoms have stopped.

It could also be an ear infection, strange I know. If he's stuffed up, his eyes can't drain and so it goops up. I just went through this with my 2 month old. She had no fever, just a stuffy nose and goopy eyes. Lo and behold, ear infection. Take him in and have him looked at, at least fo peace of mind.

Sounds like pink eye. Especially if the crusties are green. Wipe eye with a warm wash cloth. Then wash your hands. Take him to the doctor to get prescription eye drops. Pink eye is extremely contagious for up to 24 hours after they are on prescription eye drops.

sounds like a blocked tear duct, very normal. If you are breast feeding, a little breast milk on the eye can help clear it up if it's something more, but in most cases a blocked tear duct will fix itself in time.

My son had this when he was a month old. We called the hospital, and they told us to go to the ER immediately (Meaning we couldn't wait till the next day and just go to the clinic).

The ER doctor took one look at my son and rolled his eyes. He said that our son just had a blocked tear duct (Which I didn't think was possible at 1 month), gave us an ointment that we had to put on 4 times a day for 4 days, spent half an hour ranting about the stupidity of the nurse who ordered us into the ER, and got our billing changed from ER to something which was a little less expensive (I can't remember what it was called, at the moment).

Just make an appointment with your baby's doctor, and get the ointment. If he has the same thing that my son had, it will clear up by the second day (Still use the ointment for the full 4 days though).

It could be allergies. I have had allergies all my life and during my bad allergy season my eyes crust over so bad I have to get a warm wash cloth to pry them open. A lot of people think its pink eye but its not.

Now that the weather has been rainy and wet, I have more crust but not to the point I can't open my eyes. Don't know what Cleveland is like but I know Cincinnati is bad for allergies.

You could call the doctors office and see what they think

My now 5 month old had the same thing for a couple of weeks around that age. It is obnoxious, but is perfectly normal as long as the whites of his eyes are not red. It has to do with their immature tear ducts. Just place a warm cloth over his eyes to loosen the gunk before trying to wipe it away. Hope that helps!
