Hi Everyone,
I have been put on some heavy duty antibiotics for a 1 1/2 month long sinus infection that will not go away. I went back to the doctor yesterday because I now have a double ear infection. Ugghh... Anyways, I always have a hard time with antibiotics and my doctor warned me that I could end up with a yeast infection, thrush or severe diarrhea with the certain antibiotics I'm taking. I have been looking into taking Acidophilus to see if I can help prevent any of those nasty side effects. Anyone take it? Should I start taking while I'm on the antibiotics? How did it work for you? Any help or experiences are aprreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have Suffered from a terrible yeast infection recently and was really hysterical! First thing i was told is to take acidophilus and Shaklee Prefered.
Sure thing, I started taking it, and the days it was really bad i took even two three peices. I also wanted to recommend you take Garlic Since it is know to be like a natural antibiotic and it helps me whenever i need it!
Don't worry~ Just take the acidophilus. It's natural and 100% harm free!

H A.,
i also suffer from sinusitis so can relate on every level.
1. acidolpholous is fine and you should not worry about starting and using.
2. you can supplement by eating yogurt with acidolpholous or 'bio' yogurt I think it is called. it has the same good bacteria....

Good Luck and feel good soon.

Oh A., I was you just this past year....I had a horrible sinus infection that would not clear up, which turned into a bilateral inner ear infection, which perforated on an airplane ride...I cannot even describe the pain and suffering it took to recover. I also suffer from migraines, and that turned into a whole other problem.

So, yes if you are on heavy duty antibiotics for 6 weeks....do not walk, but run to your health food store and stock up on good, high quality yogurts, like Greek, or Acidophilous products. Your best bet is to purchase the live ones in the refrigerator section and time the taking of them to be opposite of your antibiotics schedule. Make sense? Pace them so they have a chance to live and do their job.

Also, are you using the Neil MD Sinus Rinse system? Got to get in their and clean out with that solution. It will make a huge difference.

PM me if you need more support. I was miserable for months...my hearing was negatively affected, I had chronic headaches, I couldn't understand, sounds were either too loud or too soft....

GL!!

I have taken it a few times & it has helped immensly. Try to find some at a GNC or other such store & get one that's refrigerated. It will be more expensive, but it's the only way to know you're getting one with live bacteria which is what you're going for. Yes, yogurt will help as well, any type that states "live active cultures" will do the trick, it's just not as high of a volume.

worked WONDERS for our son when he was a baby and on antibiotics. He used to get diarrhea all the time when he was on antibiotics for ear infections. After using the probiotics, he didn't have one bout of diarrhea while on meds.

Take it Take it and again take it!!!! I go to my nutritionist to get mine but if you have a whole foods or any other health store that keeps it refrigerated is best! Also, eat lots of yogurt that contain active cultures.....It is so worth it.

I agree that you need some probiotics to prevent yeast overgrowth after the lengthy time on antibiotics. I took a 10 day round of antibiotics 6 months ago and am still battling yeast overgrowth in my GI tract. Probiotics that require refrigeration are generally more effective. I take New Chapter All Flora, but there are several other good brands in your health food store. I think the probiotics combined with my strict low sugar diet make a huge difference in controlling yeast overgrowth symptoms. If you have a white tongue, you might try rinsing mouth several times with a 1 cup water/1tsp baking soda solution. Best wishes for wellness.

They work fine for me and mine. Do not take probiotics and antibiotics at the same time; they cancel each other out. Start right after.

I understand that your sinus infection has already morphed into something bigger and badder. I get one twice a year, though that schedule has been thrown off with the pregnancy. (I skipped them altogether last year and missed the first one this year, going straight to number two.) What helps me is to flush out my sinuses. I don't use a neti pot, but it's the same concept. I fix a salt-water solution in a plastic tumbler and then have someone pour it up my nose. Even now is not too late to try it; I'm pretty sure that you still have some residual sinus drainage.

Eat some yogurt. Greek yogurt like Chobani has five different kinds of bacteria cultures in it AND they don't put sugar in it (which yeast thrive on). Yogurt helps maintain and regain gut health. Chobani is so delicious and I like it best of all of the Greek yogurts out there. It's a bit... strong and slightly tangy but if you get the ones with fruit it sweetens them up naturally without all the sugar.

Probiotics (acidophilus is one of the more common strains but you can get a full spectrum of probiotics) is vital to intestinal health and overall health. Anyone who's taken antibiotics or been under a lot of stress would be wise to use probiotics. To clear out your sinus infection you might want to try a low dose of something called MMS (miracle mineral solution), which is typically more effective and less likely to trigger adverse effects than antibiotics. You may also want to see if you have food allergies or sensitivities that are stressing your immune system and fostering those infections.
