Experience with Infants Seeing a Chiropractor

I recently ran into another mom while out shopping. The subject of acid-reflux came up, which my son was diagnosed. She said she has been taking her 9 month old there since he was 3 days old. My son has been on some form of medicine for this since he was a week old. It helps only a little bit, but I have never heard of a child let alone an infant seeing a chiropractor. Any advice? Have any of you heard of a chiropractor being able to solve acid relux? Thank you in advance for all your help.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded. Unfortunately, I haven't noticed a difference in his reflux. However, he has only gone twice so we are going to give it another try, but I have a feeling he may just have to grow out of it.

Yes! Dr. Matthew Milonas of Milonas Family Chiropractic. He's great. He's adjusted both of my kids...my 2nd since 1 day old! Google his name and you'll find his info. If you mention a friend has recommended him, you'll get a free consultation (worth about $110). Good luck!
p.s. He's in Naperville. If he's too far from where you are, he's great at finding someone near to you.

Yes!!! I've been taking my 7 mo. old to the chiropractor since he has been a few weeks. It started w/ the acid reflux and now he is fine!! I take him now just for maintenance. It's wonderful, but you need to do your research. Not just any chiro is worth it. Mainstreet Chiropractic in Plainfield is our place and I highly recommend Dr. Stuck. I also know of a place in Oswego, but I'd have to dig up their info.
Whoever you go to, make sure that they're certified to work on children.

(note: I also give my baby a probiotic recommended by our pediatrician, so that probably has helped, too. Be careful of keeping such a young child on acid reflux meds, they can become dependent on it when their bodies just need the chance to form their digestive enzymes)

My son saw a chiropractor monthly for the first year of his life (my chiropractor gave free adjustments for the first year). Not because of any problems but to ward off problems. I've used chiropractic for years off and on due to financial constraints but would go regularly if I could afford it. It can definately help. Do the research and talk to a couple of chiropractors that have experience with infants. I learned not to talk to MD's as they typically do not endorse alternative medicines but DO's do.

Hi M.-

I also have seen chiropractic help many infants as I work for a chiropractor. Both of my kids- one is 3 and 1/2 and the other is almost 6 months have gotten adjusted since they were only a few days old. My youngest had a little issue with reflux and lucky for me all I had to do was change up her feeding a little bit(I was exclusively breastfeeding at that time and had to adjust feeding position, etc.) and get her adjusted a little more frequently as she was dealing with that issue. I get my kids adjusted every week or two as I have noticed how it keeps them healthy, helps their digestive systems and even with sleeping for my youngest. If you want to check out some info on the web- you can look up a website about chiropractic and children called Illinois Chiropractic Pediatric Association. Their website is http://www.icpa4kids.com/

I work for Dr. Ken Olson in Aurora and he is fantastic with kids- he also has 2 of his own. He is on the west side of Aurora- off of Galena/Orchard. If you and your husband are interested in trying chiropractic for your son, you could come in for a consultation to meet with Dr. Olson and find out more information before making a decision. He is so wonderful with kids and really takes his time with you going over any concerns you have. I would be happy to offer you a gift certificate for your initial exam too if that would help you out. Let me know or if you call the office to set up an appointment ###-###-####), mention that L. referred you from Mamasource so they know to give you a gift certificate when you come in for the consultation.

Good luck! I know it can be frustrating dealing with issues like reflux.

My Chiro in Naperville has a special degree in Pediatrics
He see whole families and YES, they can help the problem.
There is a different way to adjust infants, small children, medium size kids. There is a special certification for kids that most chiro's don't have.

If you want to know who it is, let me know.

Hi M., yes chiropractic can help your little boy. It doesn't "fix" the acid reflux directly. What the adjustments do is open up the nerve channels that may be blocked in your son that control the symptoms of acid reflux. It is very safe when done by the right chiropractor. The right chiropractor is one that specializes in children. I am one in Villa Park. You could also go to icpa4kids.com for a ton of research and a chiro for kids closer to you. I would definitely get your son to a chiro though. You won't believe the differences. And yes my son and nephew have been adjusted since birth. i also adjust many other children some even at the hospital hours after delivery.

Hi M.,

My daughter (now 2) had latch issues when she was very small, particularly on one side. My lactation consultant says this is sometimes the case, particularly after a quick labor and an even faster delivery, which I had. I began taking her to a chiropractor (at her suggestion) and it was the best thing for both of us. While I don't know about their being able to treat acid reflux, I do know that it does help with digestion overall. Hofmaier Chiropractic in Villa Park specializes in infants and she was an absolute joy - I highly recommend her!

Best of luck!

Yes! Actually, it's great preventative care for infants and children to see a chiropracter. My dd saw ours when she was a few months old just to make sure there were no problems w/ her spine from the birth process. She had a very gentle adjustment. I plan on taking her back once she is crawling more.
Our chiropracter is certified in pediatric chiropractic. Every organ in your body is connected via an intricate nerve system to your spine. If there is anything out of place (and you wouldn't actually feel it most of the time) it can cause a pinching down or pressure on a nerve leading to a specific organ and that can cause health problems. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it helped with the reflux--my hubby's asthma is considerably better since he's been going.

I see that you live in Aurora. We go to Olson Chiropractic. He is located on West Galena in the plaza with Aldi, just behind Robinson Auto. He has a new office. He treats infants. I don't know if it helps with acid reflux, but you could call.
###-###-####. They are very nice and helpful there.
