Experience Using a POD to Move to a New State?

We looked into when needing to ship stuff to family from VA to FL. The cost was more than the quote from the long-haul movers.

At first the cost of the POD was going to be a few hundred dollars more, so we went with a long-haul mover, but then that mover started charging extras because they wanted EVERYTHING in some type of box. When they got to my house and saw that we had things in totes, they whipped out the packing tape to 'secure' the tops. When they saw we had some coffee tables unboxed, they said 'nope, have to box them'. when they saw that we had tools like shovels/hole digger, etc. they wrapped and taped a box around them. Then charged like $200 for supplies! In the end the cost of the movers was at about the price of what the POD would've been.

So I think in the long run that the POD would've been the better deal. Just remember if you choose it, that your stuff will not only be moving forward, but up and down as its loaded and unloaded....

The Pods are not as big as you think. For our family of 4 and what we had it would have required 2, maybe 3 Pods. We went with a moving company. It cost us less to go that route.

I priced it out and it was VERY expensive to move stuff form MN to MA... it was cheaper (and MUCH less of a headache) to hire a good mover.

I think the POD was around 3K and the movers ended up costing me 2.5 or 2.8.... I did 90% of the packing.

I think PODs are cheap when you're just storing or moving across town... the gas and surcharges for a long move are $$$$

PODS are really expensive. We looked into them when we moved from MN to TX. It was well over what our movers cost us.

We moved from North of Denver to Kansas City. We looked into PODS...way out of our price range, becuase one would not have been nough for our family of four. We seleted ABF, you pack the trailer and they haul it, you unpack.

Changed to read They dropped off (to load) the trailer right on time, picked it up right on time and dropped it off right on time. I highly reccommend them.

It cost us around $1200.00. Uhaul, PODS all wanted double or triple that.

It wasn't with POD it was another company that does the same thing, for one unit they wanted $1800 to move from Dallas TX to Washington DC. I don't remember the size, but we would of needed at least 4 or 5 of them. A mover will cost more, but the small difference in price it worth it to have them do all the packing, loading and unloading. We are currently pricing out movers and using their facilities for storage. They want around $2600 for the first month because they have to unload and reload your stuff. We are looking to rent, so if we do need storage, we are going to get our rental place a month early and just have them move all the stuff directly to our rental.

We used one to move from Denver to Minneapolis. Not the best experience but I guess it was the best option for our situation, as we were renting so we had time to look for a house and put pretty much everything in storage. Definitely make sure things are covered as I do think a little moisture leaked in, possibly when driving it here. Not much damage or shuffling because we packed it well. We had a 2 bedroom townhome with dining and living room only and it all fit fine in one. I would say we probably could have fit one more room but that would be it. Because of the storage, I think this was a cheaper option vs moving truck. Pick up and drop off were fine. I heard about a coupon after I scheduled it and they would not honor because I had already scheduled it so I was a little peeved. Then, we had put some stuff at the end of the POD so we could get it out when we got there. We scheduled 2 days in advance so we could access it, rented a U-Haul to pick the stuff up and when we got there it wasn't there. I specifically requested it go their facility in Brooklyn Center (10 min from us). Apparently it was taken out for us to access, but in Shakopee (45 min from us!) I was very irritated and the rental place only charged us a minimal fee which I got PODS to pay for us. I was not about to pay the gas on a U-Haul to take it all the way down there so we just took our car and got the smaller things. If you need to store stuff for a little while, I guess it's not a bad option but if you are just moving it, I think a moving company is probably cheaper.
