Expeirnce with Overian Cysts

I was recently told by my GYN that I have a 6cm mass on left overy thought to be a dermtoid cyst. My Doctor recommended I have it removed and scheduled my surgery for May 21st. I am a bit nervous because he said he needs to use my previous scar from my c section to get in there since my c section was only 6 months ago, so I will be an impatient surgery. Just wondering if any other moms have been through this before or a similar situation.

What can I do next?

I was under the impression that cysts come and go on their own. But it is probably better to be safe than sorry.

There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion with a doctor that may be at the same clinic or somewhere else. If you don't feel good about it then explore your options. My sister has had a cyst rupture and she says it's the worst pain ever, granted she hasn't had a baby yet, but I would imagine it would be a good idea to get it taken care of. I would tell you to use your intuition on this and remember to pray for guidance.

Hi S.,
I had a similar experience a year ago January. I had a miscarriage but needed to have a DNC to get rid of what was left over in my uterus. When I went for an ultrasound, the tech said she saw a growth on one of my ovaries and even had the radiologist look at it who also saw the same thing. So when I was going to have my DNC, they were going to remove the dermoid cyst at the same time. They were going to try to remove the cyst laproscopically but could not guarantee they would be able to so they said I needed to know they may need to cut me where I was cut to have my c-section. Long story short, the good news was the were able to do the surgery laproscopically and when the doctor went in, he did not see a cyst but ended up removing one of fallopian tubes because it looked as if I have an ectopic pregnancy. I was devestated in fear I would not be able to get pregnant again. Anyway, it ended up they sent the tube to the lab for testing and come to find out, it did not need to be removed because it was just old blood trapped in there. Fast forward to fall of 2007, I got pregnant and went for a ultrasound at 6wks. Coincidentally, the same tech who saw the growth did my ultrasound this time around and again, saw the same thing....I was furious. The doctor came in and said if in fact there was a growth, they could do surgery at 14wks of my pregnancy....blah blah blah....but when he looked at the ultrasound, he confirmed there was not a growth but what was probably baked up stool. My point is, get a second opinion before they cut you open. The ultrasound facility you are using may be seeing something that is not actually there and it would be horrible for you to go through surgery unnecessarily. Good luck.

Hi S..

I had the exact type of cyst on my left ovary when I was 21. I actually had to have emergency surgery because it started to twist my ovary and was extremely painful. The surgery wasn't too bad. If you have had a c cection then it is about the same amount of pain. They will just go in and make sure they have all of the cyst. They ended up taking out about half of my ovary. The only problem I had was that it took awhile for my hormones to regulate themselves. I am completely fine now and have had no other issues with this. If you have any other questions or just want to vent a little with it, i am always here.

Good luck....you will be okay.

Hi-

I have had a cyst removed through laproscopic surgery, but did not have a c-section scar. My surgery was no big deal at all. They put me out, did the surgery, and when I woke, I felt almost nothing. The two little incisions were virtually painless and I healed very quickly. Some poeple have some pain in their shoulders after the surgery due to air traveling up there (they blow you up like a balloon in order to see everything clearly) but from what I understand it does not last long and is harmless. Since you have a new scar, they probably want to make sure you don't bleed too much and thus will do the inpatient proceedure. Other than that, the surgery is really no big deal.

Good luck and try not to worry too much.

Hey S.!

I have had it done a long with a couple of my friends, it is nothing to worry about...they are just going to go in and take it out and very rarely are there any complications. The recovery may take some time since they are going in so soon after your last baby but its not as invasive as a c section! Good luck!!! Try thinking of it as a break from the kiddos...time to sleep!

Hi S.,
I don't have any advice on ovarian cysts per se, but I was wondering whether you had a second opinion on your options. I'm just responding to your comment about being nervous about the surgery. Sometimes it helps to get a second opinion from another doctor--maybe someone in your area has a recommendation for someone?

Best of luck with everything and God bless-

Hi S.,

I had this happen to me about 6 years ago. I had not had surgery in that area before so they went in through my belly button. My cyst was the size of a baseball on my falopian tube and very painful by the time I had the surgery. It was the simplest surgery I have ever had with no complications.

I only had one good overy and the cyst was blocking it so I could not have children until it was removed. I now have two beautiful little boys.

Since it's has been 6+ years they have probably improved. I know any type of surgery is scary but this one is pretty easy.

Best of luck!

I have history of cysts, some as large as the one you have, beginning around your age, but all turned out to be "simple" cysts that burst on their own, with no complications, just some discomfort. I would have second opinion before having surgery, especially if you are not having too much pain and/or it hasn't been too long since you started having any symptoms. I am thankful that my doctor was so conservative and didn't send me under the knife right away.

Best of luck with your situation. Please let us know how it turns out.

Hi S.,

I had a dermoid cyst removed when I was 23, 13 years ago. It is better that you have it removed, you do not want it to rupture because it would be incredibily painful and all kinds of unpleasant stuff would spread where it shouldn't be. Mine was removed laparoscopically (through my belly button and two other tiny incisions) and was done as an outpatient surgery. I was also really nervous, it was my first surgery! Since you've already had a c-section, you'll be a pro. :) I have not had a c-section, so I don't know how it would compare...but I am going to guess that it will be less painful to have the cyst removed than it was to give birth. The incision site will be sore in a similar way and you feel bloated for a week if they use gas to inflate your abdomen to see the cyst more clearly. As the gas dissipates, it may travel up through your body and cause some discomfort as air bubbles get trapped in places and go away. You will have similar weight lifting restrictions as you did after your c-section. All told, you can count on a few days of being really sore but a quick recovery after. I second what the previous poster said about loose clothing, there is no way you want anything binding around your midsection- including underwear! They gave me mesh undies (like after childbirth, wich a pad in them) and I washed and dried them for a week because they didn't hurt my incision. My surgery went really well and the cyst was completely removed. I have never had another one and am glad I had the surgery. Good luck to you, it will be just fine!

I feel for you! I have not had this type of issue but I have had a doctor re-open my c-section scar twice though it was never six months apart. I am sorry I can't be of any help except to assure you that I am sure your doctor will take very good care of you and I will send prayers your way! Don't forget to let us know how you are when you are recovered enough.

Hi S.

I had a similar situation as yours. I had an ovarian cyst removed 2 months after giving birth to my daughter 10 years ago. I had a laparoscopy which were three small incisions. I recently had my gallbladder removed in the same manner. My advice to you is to be very informed about the procedure, look for the best doctor you can find (I used Dr. Chaisson from Tucson and was extremely pleased), and have someone available to help you for about 2 weeks. You will be able to move around, but you need to be careful not to hurt yourself while taking care of your children. Sometimes it is hard to ask and receive help, but this is the time you will need to do that.

I had my first c-sec in "95" in 2005 i was wanting another baby but could not conceive. i went to a specialist and found out that i had two chocolate cysts on my left ovarie....i was also told that they whould go through my c-sec to remove my cysts.the doctor ended making another insition right above my c-sec scar i dunno because i developed alot of scar tissue from my c-sec it was easier to go through for him he also ended up removing alot of scar tissue while he had me opened up. basicaly it was the same type of recovery as my c-sec. but they just put me to sleep. i was put out before i went in the surgery room so i didnt have that anxiety of being cleaned and preped in the surgery room that freaks me out all that built up anticipation ya know.i felt the diffrence rite away. because it caused me alot of pain and i felt the bumps under my skin, when i was done i felt so much lighter. it was weird to have endured all hat pain for so long and it be gone almoast immediately after my surgery.of course you got to deal with the the pain of you insition but that goes away.you will be fine if you got a good doc that knows his stuff.i conceived a baby boy shortly after that and had a girl again this year, both born by c-sec.hope this helps... godd luck...

Hi,

I did have a dermoid cyst removed about 6 yrs ago. They did open me up like a c-section. I had never had a c-section so the recovery was quite a surprise. I did have to stay in the hospital a couple of days. Plan on having a lot of help there with you to help take care of your baby. I don't know if my recovery was typical but after it I had decided that a vaginal delivery and recovery was easy.

Plan on wearing clothes that don't grab onto your tummy area. I hadn't thought about this but my mom had and bought me some loose a-line knit dresses. These became my best friends. Even after I was home, it was about 2-3 weeks before I felt like I could really take care of my kids at home without it being a dangerous situation. My kids at the time were twin girls 6 or 7 and a son 1 or 2.

I wasn't warned ahead of time about how sore and how little I was going to be able to do after the surgery. That was a shock.

It normal to be nervous whenever we are doing something that isn't typical for us. I will pray for you and you have your friends, family and yourself send prayers and happy thoughts your way.

Take care and good luck,

J. K.

Dermoid cysts are different than fibroids and thus are removed a bit differently - it may or may not be able to be done laproscopically. I had dermoids removed 8 years ago and then had a baby through c-section 11 months ago. My doctor went through the same scar. I felt the recovery from both the c-section and the cyst removal was similar - so be prepared for that.

I have had ovarian cysts, yet not that big. Luckily they have gone away on their own. My mother passed away from ovarian cancer so I am very careful about getting yearly ultrasounds. If your doctor recommends taking it out, by all means do it! I am not sure about the c-section scar, but at least you won't have 2 scars right! Better to be safe than sorry! Good luck!

I had to have my C-section reopened do to infection setting in. It seemed to heal up just fine. Then I got Prego again and had to have another C-section. They then cut in the same area, I did get infection again. I am just get them easy for some reason. So I was opened in the same are 4 times. There will always be a scar. But as far as the healing time, seemed to be just fine. Some people do develope thick scare tissue under the area cut into. But I never had that issue.
