I'd get the teacher a gift no matter what.

As for the sub, how about a small container with "homemade" sugar scrub? That's what we did for our bus drivers.

Take a container (pref. plastic with a screw top lid), fill it 80% with regular sugar. Dump the sugar into a mixing bowl. Add in some fragrant soap or shampoo - about 2-4 T. (we got apple shampoo at the dollar store) and then add in cheap olive oil. Add in enough olive oil until mixed well and all sugar is coated. Pour into container and add ribbon with a note.

You just scoop some onto your hands, scrub and rinse with warm water.

It completely dissolves in water, so no risk of clogging drains or septic systems.

It makes your hands SO SOFT and smells great! And it's really cheap, and the kids really love making it.

As a teacher I can say any token of appreciation (sub or not) is appreciated. You can have your child make a beautiful thank you card. I small bouquet of flowers, a 10 dollar gift card to Starbucks (they love that). As far as the teacher who left on maternity leave, ask the sub if she can have her come in on the last day of school, have her tell the parents and maybe they can take a collection for her for her dedication throughout the year.

When I was teaching my second daughter came along in April. I went in sometime during the middle of May so the kids could see the baby. Then at the end of the year I went in again, with the baby. I did not stay long and the sub let the kids know that I would be in school that last day.

I think it would be nice to honor the sub with a card or something very small. If you have a gift for the teacher then leave it with the office.

Yes, both teachers get a gift. Maybe more for the regular teacher given that she was there for the bulk of the year. Still, the sub had a real challenge.

In our schools, we have room parents who take up a collection from all of the parents, and then buy one large gift. Teachers don't need or want 22 little gifts from individual kids (trinkets, knick knacks especially!) and a whole bunch of $10 gift cards can be a nuisance. If every family kicked in $5, it would buy a phenomenal gift card for the main teacher and a lovely something for the sub. Some suggestions are department stores (not Target or WalMart - something nicers), nice boutiques with a wide array of merchandise, full service salons/spas (with a choice of hair services, massage, facials, etc.), theater or travel services (if you know the teacher is interested in that).

Something homemade and consumable is okay - such as the scrub one mom mentioned, or a plant (indoors or out) - they at least have a purpose and are not just dust collectors.

I like the idea of inviting the main teacher back for the last day of school. She won't invite herself in, but it would be really nice for the children to see her and say thank you.

No, do not give the gift to the sub. It was not her work all year that you appreciate. Talk to the office & see what they suggest. I'm sure one of her co-workers will be visiting her or she might have plans to return at the end of the year to collect any personal items & pack her room.

I agree, don't get the sub a gift, it was the teacher's hard work throughout the year that you want to give appreciation for. That teacher was also the one who most likely prepared lessons for the sub in the event she delivered early. I'm sure you could get her contact info through the office to get her a gift, which I think would be really nice. Good luck!

Give yourself a break and don't worry about it. Maybe a $5 coffee gift card for the sub? If you really adored the pregnant teacher, you can always do something next year when she comes back.
