Elevated HCG Levels

Hi ladies, I'm requesting information from anyone who may be familiar with high HCG levels in pregnancy. A little background... my husband and I struggled with infertility issues for nearly 3 years, and during that time suffered 3 misscarriages. We just found out that we are 6 weeks pregnant and are exstatic to say the least. My doctor monitors my Hcg levels in early pregnancy, for the previous described reasons. This time my levels have been great, which we are very thankful for, however the levels are not just substantial for a normal pregnancy, but "extremely elevated". They have mentioned that may be a sign of multiples but will not perform an ultra sound for another two weeks. We are overjoyed that all the signs are pointing to a normal pregnancy, but I'm really anxious to find out if we are having twins (etc.?) Does anyone have any experience with elevated HCg levels and if so what was the outcome. I guess I'm just curious and trying to keep my mind from wondering and driving me crazy for another two weeks. Are there any other reasons that levels would be elevated? Thanks in advance to anyone who shares stories and experiences.

What can I do next?

Mommy of twins here--
I was already into maternity clothes at 6 weeks pregnant..
didn't confirm it was twins until I was 12 weeks.

Had another baby 2 yrs later, and i was almost 3 months pregnant before I realized it. Did not show then until I was 4-5 months along.

Are you showing yet?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but higher HCG levels relats to Down's. Although as you will find out, there is a very high rate of false positives so I wouldn't worry. I had very very high HCG levels with both of my singletons, so much the second time that I was monitored almost every week. And my second was at a 1:6 for Down's! I had an abnormal uterine artery that was not feeding the placenta properly, so the HCG was backflowing into my system and not down to where it was supposed to go. Both babies are fine although the second was a preemie born at 35 weeks (b/c he was not getting the proper nutrition). Hopefully for you it is twins, but I would have them do a thorough u.s down there if it is not. Sometimes it just IS high for no reason.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but patience is a virtue. Be virtuous and be patient. I don't have any stories, but two more weeks is like waiting for Christmas. Don't drive yourself crazy; if you are having twins, you will need your sanity!

HCG levels CAN mean multiples, but I know of others that had their levels elevated and only had one. Mine were pretty high and everyone told me that I was going to have twins, but I got my singleton. The two week wait is so difficult, but try to relax. If you can't relax, at least distract yourself. :) Good luck, and update the outcome with your results in two weeks.

I don't mean to alarm you, but my friend just went through this too, her HCG levels were VERY high, she ended up having a molar pregnancy and had to have a DNC.
I hope that this is not the case for you, but this is another preperation that you might want to look into, one not so joyous. I feel horrible posting this horrible news, everyone else is so positive, but my friend was not prepared for this, nor had either of us even heard of a molar pregnancy. I pray that this is not the case for you, best luck!
