I don't live in that part of town, so I can't speak for the schools. But, if you are unsure about sending your child to school, then you can always homeschool. That is what I am doing! E-mail me if you want more info about homeschooling in Texas. I can send you some websites.

The School at St. George Place Elementary opened two years ago, so it doesn't have a long history. In the school profile, less than 60% of its students passed the 08-09 TAKS tests for math, reading, etc. Young Learners is an HISD charter pre-kindergarten only for income-eligible and language-eligible (Spanish/English) students. Other Houston ISD schools are open for parents to choose for their students, such as Vanguard, Charter, and Magnet schools (special focus schools), and the parents must provide or arrange for their students to be transported there. River Oaks Elementary School and Poe are not far from you, and you might want to check them out on the internet at www.houstonisd.org and their school websites.

Go to:

You can look up schools, see how they rated. Don't look at the "parents rating", you want to go to "compare your school to others in the area" option and see the ratings for the schools in the area.
Exemplary rating is the best.
Recognized rating is second best.
Academically Acceptable rating means they are so-so but not very good.

TH Rogers Elementary is near you and received an "Exemplary" rating which is excellent. Maybe you could move to zone into that school. I couldn't find a rating for the Young Learners school.

I made a comment about Georges Place elementary earlier but I have retracted it. Another person posted on that school and I believe I was wrong when I stated I thought it received good ratings.

Bottom line, people move (or should) to where they are zoned into the best schools. If the schools in your area don't meet your standards, then it may be time to pack up and move. Private schools are great but be prepared to spend $6,000 and up a year.

A great option that i used in the past is charter schools...its a private school that's state funded so its private school 'free'. I moved to Houston from a smaller town and please know that whichever school u choose there will always be kids and teachers that dont share the same values and morales as u do. Issues will come up and you use those times as a learning experience to talk with your child and teach them the difference between right and wrong.
