Eczema on Chin and Upper Lip

My son has eczema in his body and face since he was 2 months old. It's mostly under control. We put a lot of cetaphil cream all over his body and face to moisturize. Recently, his eczema on his face has gotten worse specifically in his chin and upper lip. He is 10 months now. It comes and goes but it gets worse when he scratches it and it bleeds. We have put mittens on him and try to cut his nails as often as we can. The medicines we've tried are cortizone, prescription medicine with more steroid (desonide) but it's not helping that much. We have introduced meat to his diet and wonder if that is some allergic reactions but there is none in his body. I think he has very sensitive skin. Any advice, recommendation on what else I can use is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

My son has also had eczema (mostly on his cheeks & chin) since he was 2 months old. When he was 10 months old we tested him for food allergies and found that he was allergic to many - cow's milk, soy, eggs, nuts, wheat, oat, citrus...

His allergist told me the food allergies are what cause my son to itch and scratch, and because of his eczema, the rash flares up and is at risk for becoming infected.

If the flare-ups continue, you may want to try elminating the foods that he might be allergic to. If you are breastfeeding, you might want to avoid eating those foods too (that's what I've been having to do...it's definitely tough, but makes a difference for my son).

have you tried aquaphor or some petroleum jelly based salve? my son gets a lot of drool rash, so i slap it on thickly on the rash and it helps protect the skin. it has also helped heal up the eczema on his knees, calves, and shins.

eczema can be a sign of an allergic reaction, but testing for allergies at such a young age isn't very accurate. if you think it's the meat, cut it from the diet for a week or so and see if his skin improves.

I agree with everyone else about the baby Aquafor, it worked great for my daughters facial rash/eczema. Also, we wash her face with Aveeno fragrance-free soothing cream baby wash, then rinse with water. She has very sensitive skin, so we actually have to wash all of our clothes (hers and ours) in Dreft. As far as the food thing goes, she seems to have an intolerance to commercially-made baby foods (Gerber and Beechnut - she would get rashes on her face/mouth) so we have to make homemade baby food for her. Anyway, I'm not sure if any of this applies to your son, but just some ideas! I hope his eczema gets better soon!

HI, My son is 23 months and dealt with eczema since birth. I have always used Aquaphor. I ran out last week and used some Arbonne baby care baby oil that my sister gave me when he was first born. I have to say, that is doing a darn good job, too. You would have to find an Arbonne consultant(I am sure there is one in the mamasource group). Both the Arbonne ans Aquaphor are pricey, but they are so gentle on our Little Guys skin. I find they are both worth the money. Take care!

Eczema is such a pain; our daughter suffered with it and it was miserable. I know people who are getting great results using Arbonne's skin care line; the younger people are using their Baby Care Line and it's helping with their skin. So, we tried it and it's the only thing that has helped soothe her skin and keep it at bay.

It's botanically based with no mineral oil, no animal products and comes with a 45 day money back guarantee.

If you would like more info., let me know

Hi A.,

You could try using something like Aquaphor or petroleum jelly, especially at night when your son is asleep. These tend to be more moisturizing than creams or lotions. I would also recommend not bathing your son every day if possible, and use only lukewarm water when you have to so that the skin doesn't dry out. If you think that he might be having an allergic reaction to meat, you could try stopping the meat to see if the eczema improves. Some people only get allergic reactions around the mouth/chin. Of course, if/when all else fails, talk to your doctor about maybe seeing a pediatric dermatologist?

Hope this helps!

J. :)

Hi A.,

My son (20 months) also has eczema and nothing helped until we started giving him Mona Vie juice. We gave him 1 oz in the morning and after three days it completely cleared up.

Not sure if you've heard of Mona Vie, but it's a whole food juice made of 19 fruits including the Acai. It's loaded with antioxidants in fact it has the antioxidant equivalent of 13 servings of fruits and vegetables. I'm not sure why it helps eczema, but it could have to do with the fact that it is loaded with omega fatty acids.

You can't buy Mona Vie in stores, it's sold through independent distributors. I sell it and I've seen business listings on this site.

Good luck!

Good morning. My daughter has eczema real bad. Generally when it's to hot or to cold it will flare up. She is now 3, but it drove me nuts when she was a infant. What worked for us on the face was vasaline. It was cool and soothing and felt good.
Aveeno also has a lotion spesificaly for eczema it's real nice to. I personally don't think it is the meat as as different stages of life it flares up . I hope this will help you.. M..

Eczema is a very prominent problem and can stay with you for life. I am a customer of an awesome product line that is toxic free and helps tremendously with dry skin and skin irritations. My 3 year old had Ketosis’s Polaris (an excess of ketion(spelling?) in the hair follicles) and using the lotion from this company helped it dramatically. Let me know if you are interested in getting some information on this at ____@____.com I can be of assistance. Julia

hi there
i heard calendula cream is suppose to wk wonders
if u go to californiababy. com (no, I dont wk for them)
and check out there site, you will see many organic products , such as soaps that don't have sodium laurel sulfates, apparently these are in most soaps and shampoos and can cause severe drying of the skin for some..
I saw the owner of the company on that show vew from the bay.. and they actually showed a pic of a baby who had eczema and the parents didnt know what to do and tried everything, then they used that caledula cream, the baby got better in just a week. anyway, its worth a shot.. good luck
