My 4 year old daughter has excema. Some days the itching is just awful, she can't sleep and is very very whiney. I have creams and allergy medicines. Does any body else have this problem? What did you do?

have you taken her to a dermatologist? We get it under control with a steroid cream and another prescription cream to get it under control and then maintain it with nightly Lubiderm lotion.

my 4 year old son has it too. The doctor gave a perscription called Elidel. It works wonders! No itching after it is applied, once or twice a day. And the rash almost goes away completely.

I agree with Carrie. Try the Gluten=Free Casien Free approach. Doctors like to control symptoms by putting band-aids on them. Get to the source of the problem. A person could type for days on the topic of food sensitivity and not cover everything. Use google as she explained.

do a google search for "gluten eczema" - click on the Cached result for the top search result... the actual page is www.foodintol.com/food_intolerance/cause_eczema.htm, but the code is not displaying right. the cached version will at least let you read it.

eczema is one of the MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS of a FOOD ALLERGY!

it's most likely being caused by a sensitivity to gluten and/or casein (a milk protein).

this website makes it seem like elimination diet is some big mystery... all you need to do for an elimination diet is remove all foods containing gluten and dairy ALL AT ONCE for 30 days. (note: this is super healthy to do even if it's not the cause)
Then you slowly add back foods for one day and wait 72 hrs for any reaction.

Feed your child only FRESH fruits, vegetables, and meat/fish for 30 days. Make sure to include a WIDE variety of these so she gets lots of nummy nutrients - flavor with lemon/lime juice, fresh (not dried!) herbs (basil, oregano), garlic or ginger. There are some people allergic to grasses so you should avoid rice too, but if that's really too hard, you'd probably be ok to include it occasionally.

This may seem hard (esp. if you're not used to cooking), but it's SOOOO worth it. And you'll learn a lot in just 30 days. Imagine never doing this and having to pay for all the creams, dealing with flair-ups, and later dealing with all the other reactions she'll eventually have if food is the source.

My advice is to try this and nip it in the bud. It doesn't hurt to try. Good luck! Peace!

Boht of my children have it, but my oldest has it the worst. She will itch till it breaks open and bleeds. The only cream that the doctor has given us that has worked is Des Owens (Desonide). It is the consistancey of vaseline and stays on the skin, it is really good stuff. Also when i give my son a bath we do not use any soap. The doctor recommended one bath per week but I was like NOT! My son usually takes a bath every other day with no soap and he is fine. The shampoo you use on your children can also cause dryness. My his dermatologist recomended paul mitchell baby shampoo. It is very gentle and worked well. Also another home trick is OLIVE OIL. After a bath when your skin is still damp take extra virgin olive oil and rub in the skin (especially good on knees and elbows). My kids tend to be dryer in these areas. Also there are ALOT of unscented lotions out there that work really well. There is uncented CETAPHIL, EUCERIN, LUBRIDERM, just to name a few.

My 3 and 1/2 month old also has eczema. I just took her to the dr the other day and he told me to buy 1% hydrocortisone ointment for the itching and to use it 2-3 times daily and to buy Cetaphil non-soap cleanser that wont dry out her skin and told me to use a daily moisturizer such as Eucerin after her baths. I havent been doing this very long but it has helped with the dryness of her skin. She still does itch but I dont think it is as bad. Let me know if any of this stuff works for you. Also, if you have any suggestions for me, PLEASE let me know! Good luck!

My son will be turning 3 and has eczema. His dermatologist recommended Vanicream as well. It does a great job of keeping his skin moisturized. We also have eczema oil that was prescribed which I would rub all over him after baths. His dermatologist basically prescribed a whole regiment of frequent but quick baths, eczema oil and Vanicream as well as an antihistemin (sp?) syrup to take as needed (when the itching gets bad). I would recommend consulting a dermatologist to review your options and even consider any sort of allergies you daughter might have.

My sister in law is having this problem with her 3 month old. Her doctor recommended using Arbonne products. They have a baby line as well as items for adults. you could probably do a google search and find a rep, or perhaps there is someone on this site that either sells it or knows someone.

My SIL said she started using these products and noticed a difference in a matter of days and his eczema was very severe. Her doctors office sells it and recommends it to everyone. Its all natural products, I have used a few of the products as well. You get a 45 day money back guarantee if it doesnt work, kind of spendy but it you dont notice a change you can return it and get your money back. Good luck, poor girl must be miserable.

I have psoriesis (spelling?) and eczema too. Got it from my dad...thanks! Anyway, I have tried the creams and bandaides as well and the only thing that works for me and can put my condition into remission for a month or two at a time is sun or UV exposure. Do you find that it is not so bad when your child plays outside alot. It's because of the UV exposure from the sun. You might not like my answer but it works. Ask your Dermo. if it might work for your child. I also will tan in the winter time to get the UV exposure. But I will only expose the parts of my body that our effected. If you go to a tanning salon, always wear eye-protection...please.

Many times eczema is related to food allergies. I would go to a allergy specalist and they may be able to help find what is causing this. I do know that you shouldn't give baths everyday. Things I'm sure you already know. I would check with a allergy specalist. A good one would be Dr Wexler. He is located in Minnetoka.

My oldest has bad eczema, like oozing and bleeding, crusty patches. Its gets pretty bad.
We've seen dermatologists, doctors, allergiest (he does have a milk protien allergy that can make his eczema flair up, but its not severe) and nothing, not steriod creams or over the counter creams, nothing has helped. I did finally find osmething, after all of that, that helped him, its called Equate Dry Skin Cream, its at Wal Mart, in a white tub with a twist off lid. Literally we put it on after bath that first night ,and the next morning, his crusty spots were smoothing out, and if we put it on religiously after bath every night, his skin doesn't break open like it did before.

We also use a gentle soap, we use cloth diapers adn so I just use the soap for that for all our clothing, washes clean, no residue left behind, all natural ingredients washing soda and coconut oil. No fragrance, super clean clothes. www.charliesoap.com one bag lasts us for over a month.

My son has eczema and his dermatologist recommended Vanicream. They have bars for the bath and lotion as well as sunscreen. He also has some prescrition medications for when it is out of control. He also prescribed a liquid medication for when the itching is really bad. They all work wonderfully.

My son had eczema and itching behind his ears and on his legs. My pediatrician recommended Eucerin and it worked better than the specialty things I was trying.

The trick was to really slather it on - not just a thin layer like I would do on my own skin after a shower or something.

The other thing we did was to decrease the number of baths, and we decreased the amount of soap we were using during baths. I haven't seen a big difference in how "clean" my kids seem, even with these changes, but there's been a significant difference in how itchy they are.

You may also want to look into the kind of detergent you're using for clothes, and if you are using fabric softener, you might want to discontinue and see if that helps too.

I put lotion on twice a day. I use either Aveeno soothing relief moisture cream for eczema and Gentle Naturals eczema cream. The doctor old me to use 1% Cortaid or something with 1% hydrocortizone (spelling?). Just an FYI there is a virus going around that is making people itch like crazy. A rash will develope and it'll come and go over a few weeks. I just wanted to let you know just in case it's not just eczema.

Try an all natural product such as a pure shea butter. It would also help to ensure that you are washing her in something very gentle and natural.

The other thing that could affect it is your laundry detergent esp what her night clothes and bedding is washed in.

I am not trying to sell you on this even thought I do distribute it but xango has been known to work great on eczema of all ages. Normally you would just drink it but for skin conditions they recommend putting it on topically as well as drinking it. you just take a cotton ball to the glass after you have drank a dose. Check out lovemangosteen.net for more info or email me privately ____@____.com I usually try to reach out to poeple who have tried everything else. This is a all natural product too.

My baby has eczema too. I use CETAPHIL (non-soap cleanser for body and hair) in the bath. After her bath, I use EUCERIN lotion (It works really, really well) or if it is really bad, I use AQUAPHOR (an even stronger lotion that is made by Eucerin). Then I spot treat her bad areas with 1% HYDROCORTISONE 3 times per day. The pediatrician gave us all of these instructions, so it is completely safe and it definitely works for my baby. I would highly recommend these products. They are relatively inexpensive, and if you keep up with it, she shouldn't have too many problems.
