My son has eczema, I bought some regular coppertone spf 30 and he got bumps all over his arms and his poor cheeks turned red bumpy and itchy. Should I try coppertone water babies spf 50? Both are paba free but I havent compared all the ingredients yet. Has anyone here delt with this before and found something that works?

What can I do next?

Eczema seems to be exacerbated by the sun so maybe it's not the sunscreen. It is also said that eczema is related to food sensitivities, especially dairy. For a more mild sunscreen with still the same protection, I think California Baby has good products. Hope this helps, ezcema is no fun!!! My 6 month old just had a bout of it on top of his head, I think it was from sweating. It's hard to say!

My son has eczema and I found that the Banana Boat Tear Free Sunblock works great. I can't use Waterbabies because like you my son had a reaction the very first time we used it.

I would try the aveeno brand sunscreen especially if you have a child with eczema, i know i just saw it the other day with a spf#70 and there were 3 products all together.

The aveeno is the best product for ezema/or any skin allergies, i use it for 2 of my teens and myself

Yes I have dealt with this my classroom. There is a sunscreen which is a bit pricy but works great for children with eczema and I can't remember the name of it I do know it starts with an "M" and you can find it at natural food stores such as "Whole Foods". Oh I wish I could remember the name of it.

My friend has 3 daughters all of with have serious eczema, especially the baby. After trial and error, she found the Arbonne baby line perfect for them all. Don't worry, I'm not selling them! But seroiusly, from sunscreen to lotions and shampoo, they all seemed to help and definately not irritate. If you do try them and want to continue using them, think about signing up as a consultant. You don't have to ever sell or do anything, but you always get 35% off(what you would make if selling) and I think it's only like $25 to sign up...my neighbor did this. Hope this helps!

I had this problem too and we found Blue Lizard Baby was the best - the only one that was fragrance free, chemical free AND waterproof. The neutregena sensitive skin is my favorite to use if not getting wet but it is NOT water proof - but it is a nice texture. Then I found Ocean Potion Naturals last summer but not sure if it is still made as it was not on their website. It does have scent in it and it was a strange smell but my son did not break out to it. So far this year he has not broken out to regular no-ad sunscreen... so maybe he is over it now - don't know.

Even coppertone babies has a lot of chemicals in it - I would try an all natural sunscreen like Jason baby or California Baby or Badger.

Hi V.,
My daughter has extra sensitive skin and the only thing that I can use on her is the Neutragena Sensitive Skin sunscreen....works like a charm. Her skin is so sensitive to sunscreen that if i apply my son's sunscreen first and then apply hers, she will get red itchy bumps. So i just use this now and everyone is happy. Good Luck :)

I have tried many products for my son, who is now 4. He used to get terrible rashes from sunscreen. Finally, last summer, I had great luck with No Ad. It is cheap and you can get it anywhere.

Hi V., I just started selling these great skin products called Arbonne. They have a great baby care line! One of the things they brag about is that it is designed for extremely sensitive skin. It is botanically based and pediatrician- tested. The other thing I have heard all over the place is it is very helpful with eczema. They also have a sunscreen! Here is my website and if you have any other questions you can email me www.L..MyArbonne.com If you would like to try a sample of the baby products I can send you a sample to try, no obligation. These products work great for my son. Anyway good luck with your baby!
Sincerely L.

I have this issue with my 5 year old -- you have to always get "Paba Free" sunscreen. Stick to that and you won't have that issue. Most of the baby sunscreens are but you must read every label to ensure that it states that it is or he will be so unhappy!!

I think, instead of trying to find a sunscreen that won't irritate, the focus should be on getting rid of the eczema. I have quite a few friends who have gotten phenomenal results from Reliv's nutritional product for kids. It is fabulous for clearing up all kinds of allergies, including eczema. My family uses the adult products because our son is 18. We found out about Reliv about a year ago when our son was very ill with mononucleosis, and he made an incredible recovery. Reliv has been around for 20 years but because it is not sold in stores, many people don't know about it - yet. As the wellness industry booms because people cannot get full nutrition from even a "healthy" diet, supplements are the way to go and Reliv will burst on the scene, I think, in a big way. The company has been very highly reviewed by Forbes, Fortune, Success magazine, and more for their ethical business practices. You can get Reliv from a distributor (many of them stay-at-home moms) - you'll get connected with other people with similar issues as your family, and they'll tell you what they did. Reliv is based on education, research and science, and it takes the guesswork out of nutrition. Based on the many many parents I have spoken to, I think you'll be thrilled with the results! Let me know if you want more info!

Hi V.-
Both my children have very sensitive skin (and serious food allergies, which sometimes go hand in hand). I love the skindeep database- you can look-up just about any product & see what bad things they put in it that will tend to cause a reaction on someone with sensitive skin.

http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com/browse.php?maincat=babycare

One thing to consider- more coverage- hats, spf rash guard swimshirt, long swim trunks (means leass stuff you have to apply to his skin) & use the sunblock that coats on the surface (zinc oxide type) rather than chemicals that soak into the skin. Good luck! We like CA Baby sticks- they are pricey but last a while.

Good Luck!

We too had skin reactions with certain sunscreen products. Coppertone water babies was among the worst of the culprits! I found out the hard way that just because the bottle said that it was for babies/children, they weren't necessarily any more gentle to the skin. I would recommend trying Aveeno or Neutrogena (look specifically for ones that say they're for 'sensitive skin' and fragrance-free). You may need to re-apply them more frequently, but it's worth it, especially since so many products can irritate eczema-prone skin.

The last time I checked (which as a long time ago) Coppertone was not hypoallergenic. You need to find one that says hypoallergenic as these don't have the stuff in them that most people who are sensitive are sensitive too. I know Coppertone is one that if I use it, it burns. I get my sunscreen through Quixtar.

Aveeno makes a great sunscreen that is a spray. It's extremely thin & sprays very easily. You don't have to rub it in, it smells great, you can even spray it on their scalps. It's hypoallergenic, so it probably wouldn't have the same effect that those others did on your sun. It comes in SPF 45 or 70. I highly recommend it. Hope you find something that works!

Hi V.,

I try to use all natural products whenever possible - especially lotions and sunscreen. I feel like it all probably seeps into our bodies. Anyway, I found a great sunscreen called UV Naturals. I think I ordered it from www.katescaringgifts.com It's kind of expensive, but it's the best natural sunscreen that I've found. My kids can go pretty much all day at the beach without me having to apply more. It is a little bit greasy, but still worth it I think. It might be worth a try for your son - maybe try a small section of his body first to check for reaction.

Arbonne has an spf 30 for babies. It is plant based and it works without dyes or chemical fragrances, No nuts, mineral oil or animal by products either. My son goes through the bumps seasonally on the elbows and back of his arms, this has helped him and he doesn't burn while playing outside. I would be happy to send a sample to you so you can test spot it before you buy it. The sunscreen lasts a long time! Let me know if you want a sample. I understand your trouble finding what to use! I've been there too! I switched over to using safer products from a store called Melaleuca. They offer a skin care product line that works amazingly on eczema. They also offer a mineral based sunscreen that has been highly effective & not bothered the eczema at all because of the minerals. You can get more info. from www.melaleuca.com or feel free to contact me & I can show you what I've used! It's made a tremendous difference for my family! Hope this helps!
