Eczema - San Lorenzo,CA

Eczema is systemic so everything is coming from the inside out. If he's getting the proper nutrition, he may not be absorbing it properly. An absorbable multivitamin (I can recommend a good chewable one) should take care of it if is simply moderate. Renew lotion is the only topical application I have ever seen that will absolutely heal it. My neighbor's child had it so bad, she bled. Once we started her on the vitamin and I gave them some Renew, it went away completely.

My son went through this and we had good luck with the following skin care regimen recommended by his pediatrician
-hydrocortizone ointment (start w/ .5%) 2 X day
- AVOID lotions (ped said they can irritate eczema) We only use creams on his face and body and like PP's mentioned Cetaphyl Creme is really good
-I use Aveeno Eczema baby wash at bathtime

We love Cetaphil cream and Cera Ve cream, both come in tubs. You want some good, super thick moisturizer. I know other people really love Eucerin and that's a good one, too. It needs to be a cream and NOT a lotion. If that doesn't kick it, you'll probably want to go see a pediatric dermatologist (your pediatrician can refer you). Lather him up in creams twice a day - morning and night. As soon as he gets out of the bath, lather him up asap.

Also, you'll want to make sure that laundry detergent and bath soap and shampoo is all fragrance-free and dye-free. This is very important because kids with eczema are super sensitive to that stuff.

Also, if derm or ped prescribes a steroid cream, always opt for the weakest percent hydrocortisone. You can even buy 1% over the counter and try that first, and then cover it with your moisturizing cream. If that doesn't cut it, then you can go up to the stronger one. I personally don't like to use steroid creams on my little guys, so I only use it when it's really bad and use it sparingly. But sometimes, it's the only thing that works.

Many times, eczema is the body's response to something that is bothering him - sometimes food allergies or other things, so you might also want to consider going to an allergist or seeing what is in his environment that could be bothering him.

FYI - Winter is the worst time for eczema, so hopefully with summer coming, it should improve! Good luck!

My son also has very milk eczema and after trying everything and nothing really helping, his ped. prescribed Mometasone Furoate Cream. This stuff does wonders!!! It cleared it up so fast. Whenever I notice him getting a little flare up, I put this on and it clears up overnight (at least for him it does). I also used Aquaphore to keep the dry areas moisturized.

me and both my girls have it. First, limit the baths ( it drys the skin worse). I baught eucerin and cetifil lotion and washes for my daughters. When you use regular baby washes and lotions, the perfume drys the skin out. You could also use baby oil. If all else fails, get your MD to give you an Rx cream, i had to do that with my youngest...

My two year old also has a mild case. Cere Ve cream is great! I get it from CVS or Bed Bath and Beyond. I even saw it behind the Pharmacy counter at Costco the other day. It also comes in lotion form, but I love the cream. As opposed to Eucercin or Aquaphor, Cere Ve cream is not greasy.

My infant daughter developed eczema at about 4 months of age. She was on a diet of only breast milk at the time, so on the advice of other moms, I cut wheat and dairy from my diet, and the eczema cleared up. I ate a serving of pasta, and 24 hours later, the eczema had returned, so I knew the wheat was the culprit.

I've been told that eczema in small children is usually linked to a food allergy or intolerance. You might try cutting wheat and dairy from your child's diet (spelt, similar to wheat, can be tolerated by many people who cannot tolerate wheat), and see whether that helps. Otherwise, it could be a reaction to some other food.

My daughter had a horrible rash on her stomach and back. I took her to the doc and she said that it was eczema. She gave her a prescription cream and we just started it tonight. She also said if it happens again to put some eucerin or cortisone cream on it.

I agree with Lea's advice. And add in response to another post that cool/lukewarm bathes should be taken often and cream applied while the skin is still damp. The rich, thick cream such as Eucerin helps seal the moisture in.

My granddaughter's pediatrician and pediatric allergist both gave this advice. At first, it didn't make sense to me until I thought about how the cream on damp skin does keep it more hydrated. Now, hot bathes are more drying. Be sure the temperature is just warm enough to be comfortable.

My daughter's doc recommened Cetaphyl. It worked. I also use it on myself in the winter.

Aveeno and Cetaphil Lotions, aveeno baths (lukewarm), cortisone cream from Target.

The only products that worked for my son and many others that I know of is Arbonne baby line. Botanically based products with no additional dyes or frangrances. I can send you before and after pics of a baby, it's amazing. Just pm your email your email address and I can email the pic.

I have had eczema on and off my whole life. The worst thing is to moisturize it.
I pour my urine over it so it closes up. After a minute I wash my skin off. So what else to do. Zinc is what's missing. You can give your son trace minerals.
Eucarin is poison to me since it is chemical and not natural. I use only 100 percent natural creams. I do favor Weleda. I NEVER wash my skin with soap.
My clothes are washed in Ecover or Planet as are all towels and linens. Allergies to soap power are common with eczema.
I have no lines and a flawless complexion due to diligently caring for my skin.

My 3 year old son has a slight case of it too and we use Aveeno body wash and lotion. They have a lotion that's made for eczema and it seems to help alot. We buy it from our local wal-mart, it's about $10 or so.

We used it, it worked GREAT!

We still use it when needed.

We even use it when someone gets a rash.

This is how to use it.
Put warm water on the area that has the Eczema / Rash and apply the CeraVe.
Don't wash it off, just leave it on.
Give it some time.

When my son had it when he was little, I used all of the Cetaphil products. They worked fabulous for us! I heard the Aveno works for some but we never tried it.
