Eczema? - Round Rock,TX

I'm not sure if my 4 month DD has eczema or not... during the last couple days she has a very light rash that comes and goes on her face and ear...but only on the one side. It feels like it's dried out when I touch it, and it just looks like tiny little bumps under the skin. Sometimes the bumps are red, sometimes the skin turns red too. It doesn't really seem to bother her that much, but she does rub her eye on that side quite a bit like it is itching. It could be a reaction to the detergent I use on her clothes... It's on the side that she "snuggles" in with her lovey and her blankets. (she likes to snuggle in... I have to steal her lovey and move her blankets down after she falls asleep. lol) But it's the same detergent I have been using since she was born... it's a made-for-baby non scented detergent... I don't know. Sooo... Does it sound like eczema? If so, what things can I do for it? I'm also going to switch detergents... so recommendations are appreciated. :)

What can I do next?

My son has eczema and we use the ALL free and clear detergent. It was recommended by his allergist. After he was diagnosed, the docter suggested I use cetaphil or eucerin soaps and lotion as well. Changing to the ALL and using cetaphil has made a huge difference for us.

We have dealt with eczema and allergies since my son was less than a year old. We use ALL free & clear - no stain removers, bleach, etc. We only use all natural bath products - not even "baby" products. Wash bedding often in super HOT water. Put stuffed toys that cannot be laundered into the freezer overnight and put mattress cover on bed. Hope this helps.

when my baby gets a rash every momma under the sun tells me its definatly _____ but its different from each person! i usually look it up on yahoo image search. and can factor weather or not it is or isnt what they said. i usually end up taking them in anyway. my little one got hand foot and mouth which every momma had diagnosed as allergies...even the nurse at the pedi office said she thought it was allergies. it wasnt! look up babies with eczema and see if it looks the same on images...look through several images sometimes a weird rash will pop up that isnt the same.

If it's on the side of her face that rubs against fabric, then it could be a possibility. My daughter didn't develop eczema until she was 3 mos old. Hers was behind the knees, on the inside of the elbows, & various other patches. We had been using Dreft, thinking that since it was made for baby, that it couldn't possibly be irritating it. But her pediatrician suggested using All Free Clear, as well as switching to an unscented baby wash, such as Eucerin Aquaphor Baby Wash, or Cetaphil. We tried many kinds of free & clear detergents from Tide to Purex & everything in between & All was the only one that doesn't irritate her. We also had to use the parfume free baby wash & if we use a scented shampoo for her, then her hair must be washed & rinsed clean before filling the tub for her bath. We also haven't been able to use the so called eczema creams, since everything burns when she has a flare up. The only thing that she can tolorate is A&D ointment. Can be a little messy, but it's the only thing that works for her. We also wash all new clothes before she wears them.
She just turned 4, so we have been dealing with it for years. But overall, all of the changes that we have made, has been a huge help. Now she only seems to have flare ups on occassion in the cooler months when she has more fabric covering her flare up areas. Or when she goes to stay with her grandparents, because they never listen to what I say : /
You should still talk to the pediatricain about it, just in case it's something else, but if it is eczema, I hope this helps! :)

You could try Renew body wash and lotion for the rash. Also, you may want to consider converting your home to non-toxic products. Many have lots of chemicals in them and long-term can cause irritations and other problems. If you want some good options, let me know.

I see a lot of moms have suggested ALL free & clear. Personally, I have really sensitive skin and it would still bother me when I was having another allergy outbreak (your skin is more sensitive during seasonal allergies, etc.).
I now use a lavender-based detergent I got from Sam's- Ecos (I think is the name of it). It only calls for 1oz of detergent per load, and I even 1/2 that. It goes a long way, our clothes are fresh & no more itchies! =o) I usually don't like the scent of lavender, but this isn't very strong and you don't smell it after the rinse at all. I'm pretty sure I've seen it at Kroger also, but I usually buy it from Sam's. 250 loads for around $13, then I double the # of loads per bottle since I only use 1/2 the recommended amount.
Also if you use dryer sheets, that can irritate sensitive skin too. Bounce seems to do okay for me, but it took lots of trial & error to find one I could use since I can't stand static! The dryer balls work for a little while, but then you just get all the static again.

Have you tried putting lotion on it to see if it gets better, or at least less itchy? Because she's so young, you can't use hydrocortizone or anything, but you can use a lotion that works for ezcema like Eucerin or CeraVe (I think that's the spelling- you can't get this at Target or Wal-Mart, but you can find it at most drugstores). I would try that for a few days and see what happens to the rash. If it gets better, it's almost surely ezcema. If it stays the same or gets worse, you should take her in. There are pediatric dermatologists as well, so if your dr doesn't have suggestions, you could take her to one of these. Good luck!

Don't really know much about Eczema, but I do about Detergents. If you think your child may have an allergy, then try not using detergent at all. The soap companies have us all convinced that we need detergent, or that we need to use the recommended to the line on the cup. Either try not using any at all, just maybe some stain remover if there are any stains, or try using about a quarter the amount recommended. I never use the recommended amount and my detergent lasts about 4 times a long. Just a suggestion. She may very well have an allergy. Especially since you say that its where she snuggles with her lovey.
