Not just safe, Fabulous for you!

You might look at the work of Elizabeth Noble: Having twins and and Barbara Luke Twins, Triplets, and More. and check out this website http://www.drbarbaraluke.com/ They both have fabulous nutriton information. I realize you are not carrying twins - but thye both studied nutrition and use high protein levels to build an optimal placenta and weight gain for healthy full term babies - irregardless of single vs. twins. I found their work while Pg for the second time - with twins and focused on their protien levels. I remmebr clearly that the second book provided a table with protien goals for a singleton. I believe it was 100-120 grams per day. With the twins i ate 140-170 grams per day. It was not easy and I had to keep a log, but I carried them to 39 weeks and they were 7lbs 6oz and 7lbs 4-1/4oz. we had an unmedicated vaginal birth with no complications. I believe strongly that nutrition is completely left out of standard prenatal care and should be a focus. midwives tend to focus on optimal growth - but not a SINGLE one of the docs. (and I interviewed 15 when I found out it was twins) had any special or added nutrition reccomendations for me - even after I presented these two authors both of whom are doctors not midwives! If you need more info -PM me

Good luck to you!

E.

You seem concerned about what you are eating. Here is a site that has some info.
http://www.mypyramid.gov thne click on Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
You can also ask your doc to see a nurtionist. Also excercise (if your doc clears you) is great. They are finding that the more excersize the better off you and the baby are. I did a lot of walking, My son went to 41 weeks ( I was 1 day late). He was 8 lbs 12 oz. Also each pregnancy is different. Good luck! And of course yogurt is a good food to eat.

I ate tons of yogurt while I was pregnant. It's great for getting calcium and other essential nutrients, and, if you're having stomach problems (I had "all-day-sickness" for my entire pregnancy) it can help with that, too. I delivered my son a week late, and he clocked in at 8 pounds 10 ounces. I hope everything works out great for you.

Probiotics are a great idea especially during pregnancy. Women tend to be more prone to vaginial infections and UTI's in addition to being more susceptible to germs. Probiotics can help with that. Also consider that we give women ANTIbiotics in pregnancy so of course probiotics are fine.

Although- if you are talking about the yogurt with ( I think) bifidus regularis I would recommend looking into a supplement that has acidopholis and lactobicilus (spelling is probably off). Those are the two most responsible for vaginal/urinary health and also most commonly recommended.

As for your signature comments about your baby being underweight- it just makes sense for a 35 week baby to be in the NICU and being underweight (I am assuming you mean for 35 weeks) may have something to do with why she came early. Don't beat yourself up over that- if it was as easy as good nutrition and weight gain we would have a lot less pre-term deliveries. Many people don't even consider the effect of their nutrition on baby so you are a step ahead of most.

The probiotics are extrememly good for pregnant womne. It is very natural, duting pregnancy, for the good bacteria to get out of balance. When a baby has thrush, it is because they are off balance too much candidas and not enough acidophilus.

If it's just regular yogurt (all active culture yogurts contain probiotics) then yes, perfectly ok. Some of those "probiotic yogurt drinks" like Probi etc can increase iron absorption. This can be good if you are deficient but can cause iron levels to get too high if you're already high. So I would be careful about too much of that.
