Hi Mommies! My little one is 2 years old & will be starting daycare for the first time in 2 weeks. The daycare asks that we bring their lunch in a container that they can open themselves and a drink container also (no juice boxes or caprison's) that they can open themselves. I have been woring with her for alittle over a week & she can't seem to open any containers I've tried & if she magically gets it open I know that whatever foods would be in it would be scattered all over the floor... I am concerned that she won't eat well as it is and the fear of her not being able to open her lunch is really weighing heavy on my heart.... So my question is what lunch & drink containers do you send to daycare for your toddler that is easy open??? Thanks!

What can I do next?

It might be a little large, but maybe she could use it all day. I bought my daughter a thermos made y "Thermos",' it has a flip top that flips open with the touch of one button, the straw/drink tube is under the cap and flips right up, they don't even have to touch it with dirty hands and it is kept clean under the cap when not in use.(and it's BPS free) It is very well insulated and stays cold all day, and even overnight when we have forgotten it in the car. I bought it for my daughter in 1st grade because K was the sickest year of her life and all that I could attribute it to was the water fountains at her school. What about ziplock bags for sammwichs, veggies, etc?

They make food containers too that are great for hot food like Mac & cheese, pasta, etc.. Good luck! (if the link above doesn't work, google thermos funtainers)

Playtex makes good sippy cups that you don't have to open and are spillproof. Any zipper lunchbox should be ok.

But the daycare has to help the kids. 2 years old, is way too young to be expected to do it alone!

my 4 1/2 yo is in a full day Pre-K and the moms all take turns doing lunch duty, and one of the things we have to do is to open every kids lunchbox, put the straws in their juiceboxes, unwrap anything difficult etc, to make their lunchtime easier. I never heard of preschoolers being expected to do this with no help!

I loved the Avent cups made for children 18months +. It has a flip lid that's pretty easy to flip up & it doesn't leak. They are pretty easy to find online (ie Amazon) However, the only place I could find them in a store was Baby Depot at Burlington coat factory. If you can find one, the cup is accessable through the packaging and you can see if your little one is able to open it.
I agree, the staff should really be helping the kids. :)

Good luck!

I agree that 2 is WAY too young to be expected to do this.

I don't mean to sound rude, but what kind of daycare will not help toddlers open their lunches?

My son is almost 3 and is just now able to open his lunch containers. I would get a drink container with a spout that pulls up (like a Sigg or Bobble bottle) or a straw that pops up (http://www.camelbak.com/Sports-Recreation/Bottles/Kids-Bo..., my son has been able to drink out of those for a while.

As far as the containers go I might suggest something like a laptop lunch box or planet lunch box. They are slightly different, but in both cases there is a large compartment that opens up to several smaller ones (the laptop lunch has lids for the inner containers, but I only use them if I'm packing him something like yogurt or apple sauce. She might not be able to get the large one open, but at least it would only be one thing for the teacher to have to help with. Reusable lunch bags might be a good option too, they are easier for kids to open than ziplocs (http://www.reuseit.com/store/lunch-sandwich-snack-bags-c-....

I would explain to the daycare that you've been working with your daughter on opening containers and haven't found any that she can open independently yet. Put the problem back on them and ask them if they can recommend a brand that is easy for little ones to open up because you haven't had any luck yet. I'm sure that they will help her if she can't get her lunch containers open by herself. My 5 year old still has a hard time with some containers and I can't imagine that very many 2 year olds can open containers by themselves. Don't stress about it. They're not going to let your daughter starve if she can't open her lunch containers. :)

That seems like a lot to ask a 2 yr old, IMO. DD will be 4 when she starts preschool, and while they ask that the food be easy open for them, they're 4 yr olds. I'm a little concerned what they expect from a 2 isn't reasonable. It's daycare, right, not some advanced school?

That said, have you tried the smallest size of ziplock containers? They are round and I'm pretty sure they have a lip or tab on them.

You should also see if she can use a flip top drink container (pop off the lid, if there is one, and flip up the spout). Or use a non-leaking sippy cup (like Playtex).

Or, can she open ziplock baggies? Maybe fill them partway so she's less likely to spill.

I agree with Jackie. 2yo is too young. The daycare should be helping.
