Earring Infection on 6 Mo Old?

My 6mo old got her ears pierced at 4 mo. I have always put the ear care solution on them. I thought they were already healed but saw a little blood on the earring back. I took the earring out while she was sleeping and saw a little bump on the back of her ear. I guess it is infected. Not sure what to do besides calling the Pediatrician. Anyone had this problem before. The other side looks good except when I cleaned it, it also seemed a little bloody. It shouldn't be. The post just had a tiny bit of blood on it so maybe both sides are infected. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks Everyone! Her ears did heal. I have always had real solid gold earring in her ears so I don't think it was an allergy. I tried putting neosporin on the back and front for about 3 days and it worked. Looks good as new! Thanks for all your advice!

You need to move the earing several times a day after cleaning with gauze or cotton ball and hydrogen peroxide. Any ooze coming from the piercing cakes the skin and earing together, so you have to keep it clean. It should only take a few days to heal if you are consistent. Good luck

Sounds like an allergy. I got my last piercing 11 years ago, but certain metals irritate my ears and make them have that same reaction. They will get pussy and look unhealed. I started wearing only earrings with surgical steel posts and real silver or white gold for the rest of the earring. I have not had a problem since. After my daughter's ears healed, I also bought her hoops with surgical steel and white gold and she's had no problems. Unfortunately, inexpensive earrings are just not a good option for many people. I would try nicer earrings and see if that clears it up. After a week if they haven't, it may just be that she's too sensitive and may have to wait until she's older to have them.

My biggest concern is the little bump believe it or not. It could be a staph infection since that is how they start alomost like a pimple. I wouldn't risk it. I'd get her into the docotor just to make sure.

Hi E.,
The same thing happened to my daughter. We cleaned the ear with the cleaning solution and put Neosporin on it. The next day the bump opened up and puss and blood came out. We kept washing it and putting on Neosporin for the next few days and then it was fine. Leave the earring in so the hole doesn't close. Hope this helps.

It sounds like your little one may have an allergy to anthing other than pure gold or sterling silver. It's a family problem for us. You'll need to take out the earrings and if you plan to keep her ears pierced, replace them with real gold or silver. You can squeeze out the puss and disinfect her ears before replacing the earrings. Good luck!

i have this problem with myself. if it's not too bad, you should just be able to take out the earrings and then push on her ears and get out the pus yourself. also it might be that she is just allergic to the type of earring that she has in. I can only wear real gold. be it white or yellow. i can't even wear the hypoallergenic, nickel free sterling silver stuff. as soon as i put them in my ears get hot and itchy and then they swell and get red and bleed. then the little bumps appear and i have to get all the nasty stuff out. if her ears look bad, then you will need to take her to the dr.

I used neosporin or triple antibiotic...works better than the solution given when you get them pierced. put on the ointment and spin the earring and move it back and forth so the med. is distributed into the hole. ONLY TAKES A VERY SMALL AMOUT! I did this for about a week. Alcohol dries it out and burns....I didn't use it. I have 2 grown daughters and this worked for them and I have multi piercing in my ears and had no more problems. Do not take out the earring !!! it will close up in a skinny minute !!!! also i can only wear REAL GOLD earrings....no over lay...the real thing. C.

just clean it with a little hydrogen peroxide on a cotton gauze. (do the cleaner ear first so you don't transfer the infection to the other ear.) You can try to gently squeeze it and see if any pus (while liquid) comes out. Also look for redness in the area...and does it seem to hurt the baby if you touch it? Those are signs of an infection (pus, redness, tenderness). If these are good 14k gold studs, they should not be a problem as far as allergies go. I would not remove the earring unless it is clearly infected, because doing so will just cause the hole to close up. If you keep cleaning it with peroxide a few times a day it should clear up. If it seems to get worse...more swollen, red and tender...then you might need to take her to the dr. to have it drained. But really, at this point it doesn't seem like you need to run to the pediatrician. Just keep an eye on it.

I have put the post in antibacterial cream ( like neosporin) and then put the post back in the ear - as well as smearing the earring back with the same cream and this seems to clear up any infections. I hope this helps!
