Hi --
We're moving SW Mpls after living in NYC for 12 years. I'm trying to find some afternoon pre-school type classes for my 2 year old this fall. Any recommendations?? Also am interested in afternoon Mommy & Me classes -- while my 5 year old is in afternoon kindergarten...

Congrats on your impending move to the twin cities - Welcome!

How about ECFE - it's an early childhood family education program that offers parent classes in many different cities.

Here is it a link:

I too would recommend ECFE classes. The Minneapolis ECFE program is great and afternoon classes are generally much easier to get into than morning classes. You can find classes online by going through the Minneapolis Public Schools website (try googling Minneapolis Public Schools ECFE). I've done ECFE with my daughters for almost 3 years now and we've all enjoyed it. It's a really great way to meet other parents in your area, too. Another option is the Minneapolis Parks and Rec system. Not as many options but some fun stuff (and some great summer programs for your older child!)

Hi B.,

There are some great classes around the SW Minneapolis area for 2 year olds. The first is ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education). Each town has it's own ECFE program (normally run in conjunction with community education or parks and recreation). These are special classes for ages 0-5. Each age is broken down into age appropriate groups such as 0-6 months, 6 months - 1 year, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, 3-4 years, etc. Most are parent/child classes. The curriculum is set by the state. Classes are a combination of play time/structured group activities/and parenting type lessons for parents. I would say most moms and dads in Minnesota take ECFE classes. Each town has it's own ECFE program so just google ECFE in whatever south minneapolis neighborhood you're going to be moving to.

The other two programs I recommend are Little Gym (www.littlegym.com) and Abrakadoodle (www.abrakadoodle.com). Litty gym offers fun fitness/motor skill development classes. Abrakadoodle offers art education classes for children starting at two years of age. Both programs are just wonderful and have locations all around the Minneapolis area. You can visit their websites for more information about specific locations/class schedules.

Hope that's helpful

Try ECFE classes or a MOM's Club. I found them helpful when I moved back from Colorado. Good luck

I've been very happy with ECFE through the Minneapolis Public Schools for the past 2 years. It's been very beneficial for my now 3 yr old son in terms of socialization, working through separation issues, and so on. It's also a great way to meet other parents in your area. The only downside is that it's only 1x/week.

Hi and welcome back! I'm not sure if you are familiar with ECFE classes here (early childhood family education)...but they are very good for what you are asking. You and your child go to the class and spend half the time together and then you separate and you get to talk with other parents and your child plays with other children.

Good luck!

Hi, I also suggest ECFE. I have been going with my almost 4 year old son for 3 weeks now. We both love it! It's only 1 day a week from 12:30-2:30 but it's a great start. The parent stays with the kids for the 1st half and then the parents go to the next room and we have our discussions on whatever the topic is (and we have snacks and so do the kids next store). The teachers and aids are really neat people. Good luck and welcome.
