Hello again Moms,

I took my daughter to the doctors today and she has a ear infection again, or still, however you want to see it. She was put on Amoxicillin at the beginning of February and after that on Omnicef, since the Amoxicillin did not do anything at all! She was on Omnicef already once and I thought it took care of it quite well, this time it didn't do anything either. This time they put her on a medication called Augmentin. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of medicine? I think it is a different form of Amoxicillin. My daughter has been having these ear infections every single month since september of last year and we can't seen to be getting rid of it. The question now is getting tubes put in. I would like to know how you feel about tubes. Maybe you even have some experience. I am just worried putting her through the surgery, allthough I think she will feel a lot better afterwards. Right now she is not eating and sleeping right. If you could please give me a little insigt. I don't know if this will be the right decision (putting tubes in). Thank you all so much in advance.

Trisha

When my daughter was 6 months old she had had 8 double ear infections. She had lived on antibiotics from 2 weeks old. The day she turned 6 months ( old enough to get tubes) we had the surgery and it was the best day of my and my daughters life. The crying stopped, the pain, she turned into a happy healthy baby. We haven't had a problem since, it was a night and day miracle in my daughter. I would reccommed to anyone, do you research but it is well worth it to have the operation.

The doctor i used is Dr. Mary Hart and children's hospital,, she specializes in 10 and under and she is great, very understanding and takes her time. :)

hope this helps,,

My son is three and a half and after reoccuring ear infections we had tubes put in around Christmas. Before the tubes any cold or running nose gave him a raging ear infection and since the tubes he has had the sniffles 3 times and no infection. I highly recommend tubes!! I was worried about the pain of putting tubes in and the risk of putting a child under but he came through it great. He is a very sensitive boy and usually cries when he stubbs his toe but after the surgery at 9:20 he was groggy all of the way home and after we laid down for an hour he was back to his old self!
Good luck.

P.,
I have been through it all with the ear infection deal. My daugher had them endlessly since birth. She will be 3 in April. She still gets them just not as often. I really wish that I would have done the tubes.
I heard from a friend that the tubes are better and the surgery is not really that bad compared to the ear infections themselves.
Not to mention having your child on medications for months on end. My cousin ended up with soft teeth from being on to many medications. I would really check into the tube options more.

Trisha,

Sounds very familiar. My son (whose now 5) had chronic ear infections beginning at 9 mos. He too went through the same drugs you have....and it was frustrating as nothing got rid of it. We were referred to the ENT and at 12 mos tubes were the only option. They did also take his adnoids (sp??) but left the tonsils. IT WAS Scarey...but it was a HUGE relief....for awhile. At 2 he had to have another set put in...so 2nd surgery I knew what to expect. He's now 5 and we haven't had an ear infection since.....although his tonsils are incredibl HUGE still...and have me concerned. The ENT tells me its normal.

If you have any questions....feel free to send a note.

GOOD LUCK!

P.

p.s. EVERYONE has their personal opinion about tubes at such a young age. I was scared to death....but in the end. I made my own decision with getting all the details about it. The surgery itself takes only minutes. I think they are OUT maybe 5-10 minutes tops. Do your research, and do what you and your spouse decide and don't let anybody critize your decision. I know for my situation....and living the days/nights with a very sick child....who could never get over a virus before catching another...and had me out of work alot, or my parents coming often to help me out since I couldn't miss work due to the laws governing daycare....it was the best decision for me.

p.s.s. Another thing that I did was (in my research) found that a chiroprator did adjustments on infants. It just so happens that when he was born...he hyperextended his neck. So the neurolgic alignment in the spine does affect the ability to fight off virus...and after a few adjustments...my son is finally healthy and not the chronic sick child he was from 9 mos to 24 mos. Again, alot of controvesary around chirpractor's in general -- but that's what worked for me. I now only have him adjusted once a year...if that. But it certainly has done wonders for us!

My son has only had one ear infection in his 4 years...but if it were me having to choose whether to put tubes in his ears, I would get a second opinion - just to be absolutely sure before he would undergo such a permanent procedure.

Hello P.,
My son Jonathan also used to get ear infections often when he was a baby. He got immuned to the amoxicillen so he has taken augmentin before! it worked for him, but it still seemed that they would always come back eventually, if i was given the choice i probably would have opted for tubes.. my brother had tubes put in and they have helped him alot.

i know thats not much info but i hope it helped.

Hi P.! My daughter went through the EXACT same ordeal. Her's started in August right around her 2nd birthday. (she is now 3) She had an ear infection EVERY month, Dr. would put her on different antibiotic and we would "wait and see." She did Amoxicillin, and then broke out in hives, found out she's allergic to penicillin. Then we did Omnicef a couple of times, and I can't honestly remember the third kind we did! She then referred us to HER ENT that put tubes in her own kids ears, his name is DR. Evan Tobin -- THE BEST!!!! Seriously, we went for a consult with him after 6 months of antibiotics for her ears and he suggested ear tubes and removal of her adenoids which can put pressure on the eustacian(sp?) tubes so they are pinched closed basically and won't allow drainage of any fluid in the ear drum. It was hard to see my little angel have to have this very MINOR surgery, but she hasn't had ANY ear infections in OVER A YEAR! Not a single one. It was worth every ounce of doing it -- her speach has gotten so much better and her hearing is back to normal. (DR. Tobin will have their ears checked for hearing through out the entire process) We have another follow up in July, but so far so good. His practice is located on E. Broad St. near Reyoldsburg's Rose Hill Rd. Excell ENT. THE BEST -- If you have any other questions, please email me -- if anything, call and get a consultation with an ENT, it was the best decision I made for my daughter Maddy!
