I woke up in the middle of the night-around 3am and could not sleep. I have an awful earache. It hurts so bad that I do not remember it hurting this bad when I got them as a child. I have had a cold for about 2 weeks now....is there anything I can do (at home) to help with this awful earache??? Please help! Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice. I went to the Dr. this morning as soon as I could and after I left to get the antibiotics filled, my eardrum did rupture...

I just recovered from this; and I did need to get antibiotics from the Dr. In the meantime, you can try what helped me while I waited for the antibiotics to kick in: sudafed, ibprofen, and flushing my sinuses with saline (1tsp salt in 1cup water). Feel better!

Get some garlic oil soft gels and poke one with a pin, squirt the garlic oil in your ear. It it a lot easier if you have someone else squirt the garlic oil in your ear. It works great for earaches.

I just had a horrible one a little over a month ago; same thing where I woke up in the middle of the night. Take some ibuprofen and get to a dr. You will likely need meds to take care of the infection and it'll feel better within 24 hours! You could go to Target Clinic or CVS/Walgreens for quick service.

Hey C.! When this happens to us, we realize it's no wonder kids cry when they have ear infections, right?!?! If you are a customer of Melaleuca or know someone who is and doesn't mind sharing their stuff with you, you can put a couple drops of the Melaleuca oil in your ear. It should clear up any bacteria in there and help you get better. This works for kids, too, without the use of antibiotics. Melaleuca products are not sold in stores, but I could go over the details with you about how to become a customer. If you don't have immediate access to the products, I'd go to the doctor, just to relieve your pain and make sure it doesn't get any worse. But if you'd like info on the Mela stuff for future use, let me know. I hope you feel better soon!

GO TO THE DOCTOR! I had a inner ear infection that was left untreated - it damaged something in my inner ear and now I have terrible vertigo! Do not mess around with your ears or eyes! They are very important!

Ouch!! What did you have to do after the eardrum ruptured? That sounds extremely painful.

If it helps you feel better, when I get sick now as an adult, I swear, everything is worse and feels worse than it did when I was younger. I used to never get strep throat. Ever. Within the last two years, I've had it maybe 4 times, and it literally feels like someone's dragging a serrated knife down my throat. So far any ear infections I've gotten have been in an ear that also has an ear tube, so the pain isn't there, just the drainage.

But if anyone has any ideas as to why colds and such hurt more as we age, I'd love to hear them! I can take A LOT of pain, and sometimes, I can barely stand it.

Oh, and I wanted to second someone's comment about not dinking around with an ear infection. Or a bad sinus infection, for that matter. I had one sinus infection after another when I was in my mid-twenties. Everytime I'd think it's time to see the doctor, the sinus infections would go away. Or so I thought. Apparently, one of the colds decided to sit inside my middle ear/Eustachion tube in my right ear. I didn't know it; couldn't feel it. Well, that infection slowly destroyed my Eustachion Tube, to the point where at the age of 41 years I now have a permanent T-tube in my ear. I just saw my adult ENT specialist, who asked me when I got the T-tube (I got it in another state before I mmoved). When I told him 1995, he said in all likelihood that it would be in there permanently, because if it wasn't needed, it would have fallen out by now. And it's a pain to take care of. I have to regularly put hydrogen peroxide in the ear to help clean the ear wax around the tube. If I take my daughter swimming and I want to swim, or teach her how to swim underwater, I have to make sure my ear is plugged with wax. And that doesn't guarantee that I still won't get swimmer's ear or an infection.

So take good care of your ears! :)

You need to get into see your doctor and have that ear checked. It could be infected. A bad ear ache on an adult makes me think infection. You probably need to be on antibotics and/or a nasal congestion medication - like sudaphed.

Ear aches in adults are often caused by sinus pressure.
Here is a quick link to some pressure points that can help relive sinus pressure.

Also a good steamy shower can help with sinus. If it is the ear proper then gently, but firmly pull your ears up and then down- this wiggles the tubes and helps to clear it out.

I would guess that you will need to go to the dr. A friend of mine told me of an old family childhood thing they did. I has worked for me, but not another friend. It may be worth a try. Get a cotton ball and put a fair amount of Vick's Vapor Rub on it and put it in your ear. It has really broken things up for me. It works best if you can lay down and not mover around a lot.

you can roll up a newspaper like a cone, put the point down in your ear and light the other end on fire (small fire) it is best to have someone help you to watch the burning. the fire will pull the air out of your ear and "pop" it to release the pressure. then you should probably get into the dr to get it looked at if it hurts that bad after the "pop"

I get a bad ear ache every spring! I take sudafed and ibuprofen to help with the congestion/inflammation/pain. Then if it's still bad and I can't sleep, I prop up lots of pillows so I'm almost sitting up in bed and hold a hot, wet washcloth (in a ziploc baggie) to my ear. The warmth and lying at that angle sometimes helps things to drain. It looks gross, but it feels much better!
