Dryer-top Access Lint Filter Recommendations

After complaining last week about the new throw away appliances, my $1200, 7 year old dryer is dead.

The repair guy recommend a dryer that has a top access lint filter. If you have such a thing, and have a machine you love, I'd love to hear what you have since I'll be buying a new dryer tomorrow.

What can I do next?

I have always had lint traps on the top, and I like it there. I have used the other kind, and they don't seem to trap nearly as much lint in my opinion.

I have a Kenmore I got free from Craigslist in 2005 after they were done with it. It still works, but it clunks when it spins, only has heat or no heat, and it could use a tune up but it works great. I have no idea how old it really is, but I am leaning toward the 1980s sometime.

I am intending to get a new one because they are more efficient on electricity, but otherwise a tune up and this one would be good to go.

Do you have to have dryer top access filter?

I had an old Kenmore with dryer top an I never had issues with it .

I love my Samsung with the dryer filter in the door area.. Easier to clean out completely for me personally. I'd never go back to a top filter.

Good luck with your purchase!!

I don't think it's a big deal.
My old dryer had it on the top, current dryer has in the door.
I honestly can say the position of or mere existence of a lint filter crosses my mind only for a maximum of the 2 seconds to clean it out.
Am I missing something?

My daughter has a top filter. I have one in the door. I much prefer the door one because I often have clothes on top of the dryer. Clothes to fold, clothes to put in the dryer Etc.

It's all the extras that drive up the price and limit it's life span. I have a basic dryer withe three heat settiing's. It's at least 20 years old and works for basic drying of clothes. My daughter has one with more choices and all she uses is the basic timed dry and temp settings

I had one of those.....It was a Kenmore we bought at Sears in 1996 for like $250 or $275. It died last October 2014, just died one day... it worked great until that fine day....we now have a Hotpoint from home depot (pd like close to $500), but this one has the lint filter , you know, inside by the door... works fine--- praying I great as many good years as I did from our old Kenmore.

Good luck

My lint filter has been in the door. It is easier to get to to clean. Hubby has put two sets of heating elements, one belt in 43 years. It's a Hotpoint from the early 70s and it still going strong. I hope to replace it in the next year or so as the size is inadequate for the size of the wash load with my new washer. I also have a frig from that same time. We bought a washer, dryer and refrigerator at builder's cost when we bought our home. The washer has been replaced twice since then and it was a top loading one.

So get a dryer that will dry your clothes and get the largest inside possible to help with quicker drying.

PS These appliances also had a sabbatical of 8 years in storage while we lived overseas and started right up when plugged in.

Our dryer has a lint filer with top access. Mine is easy to clean and doesn't get clogged. The screen part gets warm but not hot, and it pulls out with a plastic handle.

My sister's old dryer has a screen channel type just inside the door. There is nothing to pull up/out, you just sweep your fingers along it. The problem is that it gets hot and you can burn yourself cleaning it if you don't wait for the dryer to cool.

I think some have a pull out filter in the door but I haven't used that type.

I went back to a good old fashioned dryer for $450. My "new" dryer went in the fritz. Between labor and parts, was not worth fixing. Love my dryer now. It's a Maytag.

we've got a maytag centennial front loader, with a top access lint filter. it's a good dryer. we've had......i dunno, 4 or 5 years, i guess.
i don't know that it matters where the lint trap lives. i've had ones inside the door that worked just fine too. and it's not like this one is perfect. from time to time i meep at my resident repair-everything guy that the clothes are taking a long time to dry, and he gets in there and cleans out the clogged line.

I have a Kenmore Elite in my home with steam feature, etc. it works well and the lint catch is just inside the door. I have a $450. model in my short term rental with the lint catch on the top, it also works well it just doesn't have the fancy options.

I think they both work well because I vacuum out the lint trap and have the vent (to outside) cleaned yearly. You would be surprised how much lint gets stuck in that pipe. It could easily cause a fire or cause your machine to break.

Before you purchase another machine have the vent cleaned out. I think the only difference in the prices is the fancy options that each one has, they are all made to be energy efficient now.
