The drum in my dryer just quit on me yesterday. I live in the Elmhurst area - any suggestions for a good, reasonably priced repair guy? Thanks!

What can I do next?

M.,

My neighbor is a supersmart, honest, and thorough handyman. He is an electrical engineer, but works as a contractor, and his prices are VERY reasonable. I feel very comfortable recommending him as he has done several jobs for us (including my dryer, which is older than me, LOL) and he will always do them well (he seems to be a perfectionist!)--and believe me, there is NOTHING the guy cannot repair (and even improve...). If you are interested, please let me know and I will be glad to give you his number (I would post it here, but I did not ask his permission to do so...).

Sears will do repair on any appliances, even if you didn't buy from them. I've had warranty repair work done pretty quickly on my fridge and microwave.

I have found that a majority of the time, the appliances i've had to repair (without warranty and paying full repair out of pocket) have been a huge waste of money though... i can get a whole new appliance for what they charge, between diagnosing problem, parts, and labor...

Another good source is www.servicemagic.com - those are typically places looking to do work right now and will bid for your business :)

good luck.

Sears bums me out. I paid 65.00 for them to be at my house for 5 minutes. When my nearly 5 year old Maytag Neptune was making loud noises during the spin cycle, they told me after shaking the inside of the washer that it was my bearings and the cost would be nearly 500.00 to fix, or I could buy the same model for the same price. LOL. Are they nuts. J Pro Appliance Repair's no. is ###-###-#### and Northern Refrigeration's no is 800-349-8428. J pro will come out without a service fee and they both work on everything. Good Luck.
