Dry Scalp Treatment?

Both of my daughters have extremely dry scalp right now. My 3 year old keeps having recurring cradle cap as well. Has anyone found a treatment that will help with either. I've switched to moisturizing shampoos and conditioners but neither seems to be doing the trick.

My kids have the same problem. The only advice I have received is to use the Paul Mitchel, Baby Don't Cry Shampoo. I've been using it for 2 or 3 years. My 4 1/2 year old is still a bit dry but no cradle cap. My 3 year old is fine & my 8 month old still has a bad case of cradle cap. I don't know if that helps or not:( I hope so.

When my daughter got this, I tried olive oil on her hair. I would leave it in right before I was gonna give her a bath, comb it through and then wash it out. She smelled like a salad for a little while, but it seemed to do the trick.

I've heard that there are a couple ingredients in Johnson and Johnson and other kid shampoos that may cause cradle cap and dry scalp. It's Quanternium or some sort of ingredient like that... I've tried the Melaleuca Shampoo and it's been awesome. I'm sure there are others where you don't have to subscribe monthly. Otherwise, they sell it on ebay too. It's Koala Pals Shampoo. Good luck!

I just have to give a specific recommendation of Daisy Blue Natural products- and no I don't sell them :)
2 of my kids suffered from dry scalp, eczema and overall dry skin.
When we switched to DB products- specifically the Honey&Calendula Baby Wash...it literally was like a MIRACLE. Their skin in a matter of a week or two totally cleared up.
We ceased needed to use Rx (Elidel for eczema) and all over the counter stuff.

Sometimes the chemicals (even non-harmful ones) can irritate kids skin- I tried EVERYTHING that I could find with mediocre results. Once we switched to Daisy Blue all their skin woes went away.

I also suffer from psoriasis, and using DB products makes a huge difference in the condition of my skin.

Again- I don't sell it- or profit from it in anyway- just a HUGE fan as it reallly changed the health in our family for the better.

Here's where I buy it from- but there are other sellers in the twin cities.

http://www.4074.daisybluenaturals.com/

Oh- and one non-lotion recomendation is coconut oil- found in the baking section- unrefined pure organic coconut oil is the best lotion I've found in the winter months for dry skin for myself, and for my kids feet/hands. It soaks in and really holds in the moisture.

Try the olive oil, definitely! It's probably already in your cupboard, plus it's free of the chemical additives they add to shampoos.

Try mineral oil. Massage into hair about one hour before you wash. Try Head and Shoulders.

I've been a hair stylist for 8 years and I will tell you from a professional and as a user Paul Mittchel Tea Tree Shampoo works wonders! It isn't cheap but it is very concentrated so a little goes a long way you will notice a change after you use it once and it works great on cradle cap two. All 3 of my kids and me have used it.

I agree with Beth. When the weather is this dry and cold I only bathe my kids 2x a week. You can wash their necessary parts everyday w/o dunking their whole body. I also have tried baby oil in my son's hair. Put it in in the am and let it sit all day (if you're not going out!). Then take a fine tooth comb and comb it through. This will help pull up the cradle crap junk out.
You might try putting a humidifier in their rooms too. Just to get some moisture in the air.
Oh, and Auqaphor is the best for super dry skin. It's like vaseline but 10x better.
Good luck!!!

cradle cap stuff I dealt with with my now 4 year old several times. My doctor stated I could use this Tar based shampoo from neuragena. Walgreens has a generic for that works the same & is less expensive. He said to only use a small amount about the size of a pea once a week. however be very careful not to let it get into the eyes.I always used a clothe to cover he eyes. After a couple of times it cleared up. Good luck!

I've been having problems with my 2 1/2 year old as well. Using the adult dandrufd shampoos did not seem to help and we both hated it. I started using Melaleuca products on him and his scalp cleared up. You need to be a member to order things, but I highly recommend them. Please contact me if you're interested. I could always order some for you to try.

I know there are a lot of different shampoos and I can't tell you which one to buy but I can tell you that my husband had dandruff his whole life until I bought a little $5.00 shampoo brush from the salon I go to.

I wasn't sure it was going to help him but I love the feel of it on my head when the stylist washes my hair so I thought I could try it for him and if he didn't like it then I would just use it to wash my hair.

He hasn't purchased dry scalp or dandruff shampoo in about two years. But he uses the brush every day when he washes his hair.

Maybe it won't be your fix but you could try it with your shampoos and see what happens.
I bought the brush at Lemon Water Salon, right off of 35E and County Rd J ###-###-####.
Good luck and let me know if you try it and it works.

They actually do make a shampoo for cradle cap. I found it at target in the baby section. I can't think of the name but it is in a green bottle and the box says for cradle cap. I have used it on my four year old and it worked great.

I highly recommend Arbonne's botanically based baby hair and body wash and their baby oil. All products can be viewed online www.arbonne.com. This would be a pure, safe and beneficial treatment for your daughters. You will get the results you are looking for.

Let me know if you are interested and I can help you get a 35-50% off.

My daughter has had that problem too and has extrememly dry sensistive skin and get's eczema. I've tried a few different things.

First off in the winter I give her a bath maybe 1-3x a week. She's not getting dirty stinky playing outside and anymore baths and her skin is a disaster.

If your not going anywhere for a few days put some vaseline in their hair by the scalp let it sit like that for as long as you can stand it atleast a few hours but if you can do it for a day or two go for it. Looks greasy so that's why I said if your not going anywhere. To wash it out use DAWN liguid dish soap and follow with regular shampoo.

If they have dry skin, hands or feet I do this. Give my daughter a bath, I then have her stand with her legs spread and arms in the air like she's getting screaned at airport security or something and put special lotion on her head to toe and slop it on super thick, then carefully she steps into her footie pajamas and it locks the moisture in all night while she's sleeping, I slap lotion on hands and feet too and put socks on her hands so the moisture will stay in too. I have tried several types of eczema cremes and prescriptions and what works best for dry skin in my opinion is Walmart brand generic for Eucerin it's a tub called Equate Dry Skin Cream it's about 4 dollars and works miracles. My daughter wakes up with nice soft skin.

Arbonne has a natural oil or a shampoo that is excellent in treating cradle cap and dandruff/dry scalp. Please do not use anything with mineral oil in it, it will just dry it out even more. Read labels, you'd be surprised what products have potentially harmful chemicals in them.
Please contact me for more info., I'd love to help. It really works well.

make sure you wash with a product without any petrochemicals or sulphates

i rub pure shea butter into my sons scalp once a week and let him sleep with it in and wash his hair in the morning. That seems to do the trick.

my own scalp was always itchy and flakey until i changed to 100% natural shampoo and condition and now i'm fine which feels wonderful!

We use Paul Mitchel baby shampoo. Any of the Johnson and Johnson shampoos have given both of my kids cradle cap. To get rid of it try the Cold Cream from Mustela. It's a little expensive but you don't need much and it works great. It's not greasy like vaseline.

Hi AO,
My advice to you is this great product available at Target made for cradle cap-they just rebranded it and it now has Pooh on the label. Just a drop and a fine tooth comb and the cradle cap/dry skin is gone!

PS. I have a really terrific boss that sounds just like your terrific ex-husband! Small community!

I used a small amount of Olive Oil on my daughter's scalp and massaged it in for 15-20 minutes. I left in in over night, and her cradle cap (she's 8 months old) disappeared. I'd been trying to get rid of it with other shampoos, creams, salves, but this did the trick instead!
