Drag Me into the 21St Century!

I need to get a new "communication device" - something that I can access emails easily, surf the Web, etc. - and have about $400 to spend. Right now I have a simple cell phone that works fine, so that does not have to be part of the equation. You tech-savvy moms, what do you suggest? I originally wanted a little netbook, but they seem limited compared to some other devices like a Blackberry - there's just too many options out there right now! What do you suggest?

Just want to cast another vote for the iPhone - it does SO much and is so easy to use. Will not give you the headache of having to learn another quirky device.

Good luck!

It will depend on which carrier you have. The iPhone is only available through AT&T right now. A friend of mine has Verizon and she has the Droid and LOVES it. Almost all the phones now are able to surf the net, do email, text, etc. You should be able to get just about anything you want in the price range you're looking at. Ask if you are able to get up upgrade through your current company, and you'll get a discount. Or if you're switching carriers, you'll get a new customer discount. Often with the more techie phones, you have to get a data package. Trust me, you'll use it!

I have the HTC Hero from Sprint. It does all the same things the iPhone does like Cdm2kk said. I just got it a few weeks ago and I keep finding new things to do with it.

I love my iphone and do not know how I made it without it! it is my phone, calender, address book, calculator, weather, camera, txt msg, twitter, facebook, mail, sticky notes, internet, games, radio, map, phone book, newspaper, hollywood gossip source, coupon keeper (will actually download any coupons for the particular store you are in & give you the barcode so clerk can scan), recipe book, food log & weight loss tracker, voice memo recorder, compass, ongoing grocery list, educational kid games, ebook reader for the classics, movie critic, family gps tracker, ipod, and that is just the beginning of the different free apps you can download!! My only complaint is that I cannot always see every attachment on my emails since there is no flahplayer for iphone yet. For instance quicktime videos, can't play, but utube videos will. Other con is that some websites do not have apps yet and they are hard to use with iphone such as this one. So I use my cheapy laptop just to use this site & shop online. Everything else I use my iphone for. Hope this helps....

As long as you have a home computer with which to type the long emails or other things that require large amount of typing to data storage, I'd go with an iPhone. Love mine. It's always within arms reach.

One word....iPhone. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE mine! This thing does everything but the laundry and I'm sure that app is just a matter of time. ;-)

There are lots of people that love the Blackberry too, so I guess it depends on what phone service provider you have or if you're willing to change. Right now, the iPhone is only for AT&T, although I think they are coming out with one for another provider soon (don't remember which one).

Good luck! I hope you find something that works for you.

iphone
It does all that... and is a phone!
My Hubby has one, it is awesome!
It is like a computer... and a phone all combined into one
small useful apparatus. REALLY great gizmo. And it all fits
in your pocket.
My Husband doesn't even have to sit at a computer to do all that stuff... he just uses his iPhone... and its great for work too.

or the new iPad is coming out soon... that is bigger, does what the iPhone does, but is not a phone.

My vote is for the iPhone.

You have to decide if you want something portable... or a desktop.
Two very different things.

good luck,
Susan

Well 2 things for me..... I have Dell laptop, smaller size XPS with Vista that I LOVE. We have 3 laptops with Vista and had no issues and that is including our 15 yr old daughter who uses her Dell for school as well and no issues with getting projects to and from the school system with Vista.

I know some people don't like Vista but we've had no reason to not like it.

Secondly....IPhone. We all 3 have IPhones and LOVE them. I no longer take my laptop with me if I am going on a trip because I have all the access I need with my IPhone. Same with daughter. Hubby is another story because we do run our business on our laptops....he keeps his laptop around but uses the IPhone consistantly.

First choice if you have $400 is the IPhone. Daughter is on my plan and our monthly bill with monthly data plans and unlimited texting, etc is $195/month. Hubby's plan is on it's on with higher minutes, data plan and texting and runs $175/month.

Computer....Hubby's Dell was the most recent purchase at Best Buy with the Black Tie top warranty and we paid about $1300. My Dell almost 4 yr ago with top of the line top warranty from Dell online was $3100, daughter's Dell from Dell online 3 yrs ago with top warranty was around $2000.

Just ideas on pricing for your info.

That depends on what you want to spend a month on phone service as well. With the Blackberry or even the iphones, you have a $30 a month data plan that you must have on top of your regular phone bill. It really all depends on what you really like. I like the iphone because of the apps and the touch screen but the blackberry's are good too if you do not want to have to bother with a touch screen or there is one that has a touch screen I believe. It also depends on how big you want your phone to be as well.

The most important thing to us, was the best coverage for the people we speak with the most. We found that the iphone is only available through AT&T and their coverage was not good for our daughter up at college. It just did not work well on her campus, so we went Verizon and have Blackberries.. That was the main reason for us.

I have a friend that travels internationally and his iphone is great for that.

So make sure the carrier you decide on works for your lifestyle, before deciding on the device itself.

If you want something just to go in your pocket and carry with you I love my Blackberry Curve. It does everything, txt'g, msg, phone, internet, bluetooth,IM, Messenger,F/B,voice calling, camera, video, plus more, I could keep going but I think you get the jist. They normally run in the area that you are talking about. They are very slimlined, have calculator, they come in black, burgandy and lime green. You can go with a plan which is $45. a mth. or buy it outright. You'll love it.
