Any of you who have double-ovens, do you use them more often than just holidays? We are building a house; everyone says dble-o's are really great for resale, but I'm just not sure, truthfully, what the "other" oven is AND I'm just not sure I'd really use it. Please educate me! Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Ooohhh! I WISH I had a double oven! We entertain a lot of family and there have been many times I wish I could throw in two baking sheet of cookies or bake a lasagna for dinner and brownie for dessert at the same time!

That said, if you don't think you'll use it, I wouldn't bother. It's not THAT great on resale.

We heard the same comment about resale value when we remodeled our house. The thing is, we hardly ever use an oven. We wouldn't know what to do with two. You're building your own house, so presumably it's customized to your taste (I'm assuming you have an architect that designed the house, as opposed to choosing from plan a,b,c or d from a builder of cookie-cutter homes). In this case, an oven is a minor feature in comparison to the whole house. But, if it's a formula house I'd consider how long you plan to live there and plan accordingly. If 10+ years, build your kitchen to suit your needs. Five years or less, you may want to consider the resale value of the double, IF the lot the house sits on is worth less than the value of the house itself. The rationale here is: if the land is more valuable, the new buyer is buying based on the land value not what's in your kitchen. Most of these people buy and remodel or tear down and rebuild if the house doesn't suit them.
We hosted Easter dinner for 30 people at our house and our one big oven was perfectly fine. Your lifestyle and the foods you eat dictate the number of ovens you use.
Enjoy your new home.

I love our double oves and so does my wife. We use then both at least once per month and usually 3 times per month. But then again I have four of my kids living in this area and we get together every week on Sunday. We use them for cooking and warming. At Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years they are indispensible.

Double oves are a lot like refrigerators. Most families could get by with a 15 cubic feet. But I have 20 and I loved my 22 cu ft when all the kids were home.

Good luck to you and yours.

If you are an entertainer they would be great for all the entertaining that you do. Also if you like to bake. It's one of those things that you will not get it then get into entertaining or baking and wish you had gotten them. So really no matter what anyone says it's up to you. You could also say it's a back up for the primary stove. If your primary breaks you have another one ready to go.

Hi,
I guess it depends on how much you would really use it. So many people would make positive comments about my double ovens, but they weren't a big deal to me. (Mine were not as wide as a regular sized oven... like 27" wide.) We bought the house and they were already in my kitchen. In 14 YEARS of having them, I used them for a total of 14 TIMES... that's right, only on Thanksgiving.

When we re-did our kitchen, I went for a single, wide, built -in oven with a built in cooktop above it. I can place food on each of the 3 racks and things don't get burned.... (I have an Electrolux now and love it!) I still had some extra inches in the plans to have another cabinet.... I just wound up storing pans and pots in the second oven.... so with my new kitchen, I was able to stick in another cabinet for pots, etc...

Oh... and by the way.... I really don't think something such as having a double oven or not is not going to be a deal breaker when it comes to someone making an offer on your house.

I hope my response has educated you. Good luck with your decision.

My husband bought our house before we had even met and I curse him at least monthly b/c there is only one oven!! I am currently trying to figure out a way to remodel and add my oven, dammit! ;) I say do it...it's better to have it and use it infrequently then to not have it and need it (which I think you will).

You definitely should have two ovens if you can make it work. We of course use ours on special occasions, but there have been many a night that was just crazy and I didn't time dinner just right and we would have waited FOREVER had I not been able to use both ovens. they are really conveninet when you need them.

If I had a double oven, I would definately use it more often than just the holidays - there are plenty of times when I am making dinner especially in the winter, and using the oven and have a hard time fitting everything in, or I have to try to make things that cook at the same temp. and then rotate them around, etc....

If you wouldn't use it and are not planning on selling your house, then I wouldn't worry about it. If I were buying a house -that would definately be a plus for me, but would not be a deal breaker if it didn't have a double oven.

just my opinion.....

We wanted double but didn't really have the space unless I wanted to keep a ladder out to reach the microwave above. Ha! We ended up getting a microwave that doubles as a oven so we now have a double oven without having to get two ovens. Ours is the GE Advantium but I'm guessing there are others out there.

And, yes, we do use the two ovens often.

Good luck!

I run my oven more than my cooktop. So having two ovens would be very convenient. We love desserts. I like to bake cookies, cakes and brownies and having more than one oven allows me to cook dinner in the oven and bake simultaneously. As for resale value, check with a licensed realestate agent and see what they say regarding resale value in your area and how it relates to double ovens.

I would LOVE a double oven ... I could cook dinner and a healthy dessert at the same time or even roast veggies while the other part of the meal is in the other oven at dif temps ... I can not tell you how many times I have had to serve colder foods due to oven temps differing or not been able to serve the meal I wanted to because of this. I would LOVE to have one and that would be a selling point for me.

Here is the thing, double ovens aren't as big as a range oven. Ya know that turkey for the Thanksgiving dinner, it isn't going to fit. Now mind you there are roasters that do a fine job for that.

So what you have with a double over is one oven and one oven broiler. If I remember correctly you can bake in the broiler oven but it usually messes it up. Yeah, I don't have a double oven.

You can get ranges that have two ovens that do about the same. Mine has split shelves and you can cook a mess in it at the same time. I have convection and know how to use it. I always think it is funny how many people have convection but don't use it because they just don't know how.

I digress...

My point is both will do the same thing. It really just depends on whether you need a large oven or not. Me, when we remodel the kitchen we plan on having both. We cook a lot. :)
