I took my 2 year old to the Dr. yesterday with pink eye and what seemed to be allergies. She says he must have not got over his last cold and prescribes Zithromax. Then she also prescribes Singulair for allergies and eye drops for pink eye. I gave him the meds at about 8:00 that night due to a slow pharmacy. By 11:15 he has RED cheeks with little white bumps and a 102 temp. I gave him tyenol and within 1/2 hr the fever is gone and the red cheeks too. He was fine the rest of the night and today until 4:00 and he just coughed a couple or times and then threw up all over. Then he coughed and heeved up flem for the next 15 min. His face once again was all RED and I mean RED. He spiked a fever again at that time. When he calmed down his face was not red but he had perfectly round red circles about the size of a nickle with little white bumps all over his face. That is where I was stumped. I gave him tyenol for his fever and both the rash and fever was gone in less than 1/2 hour again. WHAT IS GOING ON, I ASK? I called the dr. and she said he is fine and don't need to be seen. A couple hours later the RED RED RED cheeks with the white bumps were back. I said that is it.....he is going to urgent care. The rash was gone before I got there. While waiting to be seen it came back and the nurse came out to see what it was before it vanished again. They did a strep test and it was positive. I still say it is more than that. I think it is past strep and that it is scarlet fever. Any suggestions? Any I too worried? Should I have him see another Dr. for their opinion?? Oh, and now 5 year old is starting to get all of it too. HELP!

So What Happened?

12/25/06 He seems to be doing fine and slept VERY well last night and would have slept in if my little sister did not come flying into the bedroom at 7am screaming that santa came. He was so crabby! He opened gifts and went back to be at 9:30am and slept until noon. Now, he seems great! My other children had tummy aches yesterday, but seem okay today. AND.......BOY AM I EVER TIRED!

I would definitely get a second opinion. It's not because you do not trust your physcian, but it would be a peace of mind for you. I would even take pictures of the rash incase it would be gone again before you get to the doctors. I would be really concerned, because scarlet fever can be fatal. Here is a copy from www.webmd.com of the symptoms of scarlet fever.
Bright red or scarlet spotty rash, usually beginning on the neck or chest (often excludes face, palms and soles)
High fever
Chills
Headache
Sore throat (although half of patients will not have this symptom)
Painful swallowing
Tongue coated with red spots - referred to as strawberry tongue
Swollen glands in neck
Vomiting
I hope this helps. Good luck and may God Bless you and your family.

Dear M.
My daughter had scarlet fever when she was three year old. She was sick with a fever and sore throat for a couple of days. then she seemed to be fine but by the next day she had a rush that didn't go way just moved around her body. She was very miserable and it itched her bad. It looked like she had been scalded all over her body. She did not like to be touch because it hurt to bad. They almost put her in the hospital. Have you thought about that he might be having allergic reaction.

Just one more option of what the rash and red cheeks could be is fifths disease. It is just a virus that comes with red cheeks and a rash (and probably a fever). It's really not a big deal, it will pass. And I heard it is going around.

I would get another oppinion. But isn't scarlet fever vaccinated? The strep can cause weird stiff like that though, too. Hope he feels better soon!
