I'm going to get a doll house for my two daughters (age 4 and 1). There are so many options, and price is not my major factor. However we are going to keep it in my 4 year olds bedroom which is a small bedroom. So I don't know that bigger is going to be better in this case. I never owned one. There are so many options. Seems like the ones that accommodate a standard barabie size doll are bigger than they need to be. Does any one have any advice for brands, materials, size? thanks

What can I do next?

Fisher Price Loving Family Dollhouse is a great one. It's large, but folds up to much smaller for storage. What's also nice about it is that it's very popular, so there are a lot of accessories for it that are easy to find. Had ours a couple years now and it's held up well.

You have a wide selection! Are you interested in something the girls are going to play with for years if they want to, or something you'll dispose of when they get tired of it?

Barbies are tall dolls and their houses take up a lot of space. But you might find a good sale this time of year, or even a good used one (it never hurts to try Craigslist or eBay).

It's something of a gamble any way you do it. But when one of my granddaughters was five or so, the thing she really, really wanted for her birthday was a doll house. Some of her relatives went together on a Plan Toys doll house - wooden, good quality, pricier than many - along with a doll-house family and three rooms of furniture. I think I ended up ordering it on eBay because the price, even with shipping, was the best I could find at the time. Since then she has been given other furniture and household items for Christmases and birthdays. She's eight now and she still loves it.

I would not get a Barbie doll house. My daughter got hers when she was 4 and doesn't play with it at all . They say girls are into actually playing with Barbies when they are around 8. Good luck =)

I got my daughter the loving family doll house a few years ago (she was 3) and she still plays with it. I got the one that came with some of the furniture. It is plastic and folds up, so you can tuck it in the closet or next to a dresser. You can also purchase other accessories for it.

We have the Fisher Price My First Doll House and love it. We bought it for our grand daughter when she was 2 and at 4 she still loves it. Neighbor kids come play and even the 8 yr old likes the furniture and people. We liked the chunky little family and even bought the extra Grama with a stroller to take the baby for a walk! It is a couple feet tall and has options for other room sets, and you can get the family in African American or caucasian. I would think a Barbie doll house would be bigger and maybe too sophisticated for a 1 year old.

If you want to get something nice and more age appropriate for the 4 year old you could get the fisher Price Little People doll house for the 1 year old. My daughter got this when she was 1 and still uses it at 3. My son is 5.5 and has mostly outgrown the Little People (he has a farm and some other stuff) I was looking at the Fisher Price Happy Family in the store and was considering getting it--it looks nice. I'm still deciding too.
