Dog Sick

Our 5 year old, 10 lb, half bichon and half yorkie, maltice, and poodle mix ( mut! :) ) has been peeing on the floor for almost a month now. She typically is very house trained. She is also whining to go out much more frequent. I called the vet about a week ago and brought in a urine sample. It was confirmed she has a UTI. We were then prescribed antibiotics and have been taking them.

I feel like she may be getting worse. Just yesterday she pee'ed right in front of me with no wine nothing. Then last night when jumping into our bed (king size a little higher off the floor) as soon as her hind legs hit the edge, she stopped and went right down the side of the bed. Then in the middle of the night I woke up and felt a large wet spot next to me in the bed. My husband said he had just taken her out. So not sure if she pee'ed before or after that, but still! Until now, we had just been finding wet spots all over the carpet, but from when we aren't right there.

I just can't handle it anymore. I love my little dog, and I know it isn't her fault. Something is wrong, is it going to get better? Could it be something else that she is sick with also?

Really appreciate your thoughts!

So What Happened?

Well, her urine has now turned to a red color instead of the dark yellow. We are taking another urine sample in to the Vet. We have been in constant conversation with them. I am hoping a second round of antibiotics will help. Thanks for the responses!

There is a product called "Tinkle Tonic" that may help her.
My mom is a breeder & raises her dogs holistically - has had great results with this product. Here is a link & excerpt:

http://shop.robbinspetcare.com/tinkle-tonic-1-oz.html?dog...

"Tinkle Tonic is intended to soothe, lubricate, strengthen and protect urinary tract tissues of dogs and cats."

If there is no other medical reason for her behavior, has there been recent changes or stresses in the house that she could be responding to?

Good Luck, hope this is helpful.

Hi Amanda:
I am a firm believer that when your animal acts abnormally, take them to the vet. Just like your kids, you can tell when something isn't right. I would tell them the situation and have them run blood tests, etc. Tell them every detail that you know, is she still eating? Drinking more? Vomitting too? THis will help them to figure out what is going on. Having urine all over the place is so yucky! I have a cat that we have been working with for several years with diabetes and UTI's, so I understand. And now that we have babies, it is even more annoying! Hope that helps!

My older dog did similar things one time. It could be several things. Firstly, the first round of antibio's may not have worked and she may need a second. Ask your vet about this. Secondly, has she had ANY dietary changes? Sometimes even a minor dietary change can increase their water intake hugely and they can't adjust to the increased need to go. Thirdly, not common with a 5 y.o., but older dogs, they lose control of their sphincter (sp) and have to go out more often. Best bet is to go to the vet, although I know that's alot of effort. But an incontinent dog is very hard to live with...

The first thing I would do is wash around her bottom with a saline solution and then collect another urine sample and have them culture it to find out what antibiotic will work against those bacteria. Try to catch the middle of the stream.

This is from experience because I got a false positive on her urine sample one time because of contamination. Also, I wasted time with antibiotics that didn't work in the past also.

Once you clear up or rule out an infection, then you can have her checked for any other problems. If she starts getting infections a lot, then I would have her blood checked for lymphoma or leukemia to play it safe.

In the meantime, maybe you can keep her in a crate at night or always have a plastic sheet and blanket under her until you get this cleared up.
