I found a bottle in the bottom of my cabinet and I bought it maybe 5 years ago. It's SPF 50 Baby Magic. Think it's still effective? I looked for a date on the bottle and there isn't any.

What can I do next?

Yes, sunscreen does expire. I heard talk of sunscreens on the "TODAY SHOW" a few weeks ago. Sunscreens are for for a year or two from what i understand.

So finding a bottle 5 years ago.

Throw it out.

Yes it does expire, especially at higher SPF. (less stable chemicals). I would *not* keep any sunscreen more than two years.

My neice got a bad sunburn one outing due to expired sunscreen.

Yep - it's recommended that you get a new bottle every year, regardless of an expiration date. It's just not as effective after a year's time.

Yes. It does expire, but manufacturers are not required to put it on the container. I beleive it's good for 2 years.

Rule of thumb is to toss it each year and buy new.

Hi, I found 3 bottles of sunscreen in my cabinet about a year ago & had no idea how long it had been there & there was not an expiration date on it. I didnt want to toss them all without knowing for sure being they cost so much. I called them & gave them the numbers on the bottles and they informed me two were outdated & one was good for another year. They also told me that most manufacturers are now putting a date on them so if it doesnt have one it is probably old. The biggest bonus of calling them tho was that they sent me some great coupons. On some websites you can enter numbers from product container & it will tell you if it has expired; which saves having to make the phone call. Just get on their site and check it out.

Wow, I JUST read an article about this in a recent Parenting magazine! Yes, as everyone else stared, it expires! If it's a new, unused bottle you bought last year and hasnt expired, it's ok to go ahead and use it. But if it's a used one that's been in and out of the house, in the heat, toss and replace it.The active ingredients have lost effectiveness.

Yes it does. I believe dermatologists recommend discarding after one year. (I'm not 100% sure it is one year)

When in doubt, throw it out. That's my motto. It's much better to spend a little more money on a new bottle than to take a chance when it comes to foods or chemical products.

Sunscreens expire 2 years after the manufacture date (not the date of purchase or first opening) and can actually cause problems if they are used beyond this date ;)

Yes, it expires. It loses it's potentcy over time. They recommend replacing it after 1 year.

Yes it does expire. When my son was 18 months old, he run into a sheet of Formica and it cut his forehead clear to the bone. When his stitches came out, I was told to keep sunblock on his scar. I was specifically told by the plastic surgeon to not use any that I had on hand unless it was bought in the last 2 years because it looses its effectiveness. Because the baby sunblock I had was 5 years old, I went and purchase more. I typically buy new about every other summer now.
