Does Mamapedia Have Moderators?

I see so many people trolling on here. Your IP address automatically is logged when you respond to a post or write a questions, so it's easy see if posts are coming from one user or if a user has multiple accounts used to troll other questions. Most forums kick out the abusers, but does Mamapedia not moderate? Or just moderate super minimally only when things have been "reported" multiple times?

What can I do next?

Since the new company took over, board moderation has changed. Marc West is no longer CEO of MMP, so the level of care and interaction has changed.

You can report an item - but the "moderators" are NOT on the board all the time. And to top it off? There used to be mom's who posted on the board who worked for MMP - so there is a TON of bias there.

Let's not forget the Facebook MMP wall - they WANT drama so that more people will come to the site and they can get more money in advertising.

To the best of my knowledge, they do NOT track IP addresses. In my 7 years here? I've only seen them BLOCK one person's account. Other than that?? It's hit or miss...

I remember a time when a post would be pulled if there were ANY swear words in it...now I've seen people post swear words and they haven't been pulled....

I don't believe this is like ebay where EVERY SINGLE post is scanned upon submission. You ask the question, it gets posted. If people report it? it MIGHT get pulled.

Yes. Mamapedia has moderators. Hi!

We rely on members, such as yourself, to report problems (i.e. trolls and spam). I look over each report carefully, and try to be unbiased while giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. However, when posts are reported by MORE than one person, it does alert me that the poster really is a "troll."

Long story short, I rely on you to help me out because as Katrina A. stated, we are not 24/7/365. More like 1/7/342. :)

Here's an interesting situation:
A week or two ago, someone asked a question "do you report posts?" -- many of the replies were that unless something contained a racial slur or other grievous insult, they do not report posts.

So, while there have been some awful trolls, if enough people aren't reporting, nothing happens.

Like yesterday-- we had a problematic "new" poster who didn't like the advice given and freaked out online. For what it's worth, I thought her original post smelled funny to begin with, just because there were some parts of it which didn't seem right. At least, not in my experience of the world-- I answered genuinely in case it really wasn't a troll question, but by the time I got back to it later, I was rather disgusted and not surprised. I did report it as the OP was telling everyone to go 'eff themselves' (not in those words), etc. But mostly to get that person's temper tantrum removed.

But if the question doesn't get reported- and we've had regulars call the group of women at large rather vulgar names as well-- people still click on the question, see the fracas and join in. Which is what the trolls want. I know that one of our regulars does like to troll and has admitted as much to me privately. I personally refuse to answer that person's posts any more, however, plenty of others do... and then often get told off.

I suppose the only true moderation here is to moderate our own selves.?

99% of people have a dynamic IP address. Unless you have a business account or pay higher charges you have dynamic and may not even know it.

This means that each time you log on your computer you have a different IP address. When I worked for SBC/Yahoo on the DSL account most people had no idea they did this. But it's the most common sort of connection.

There is literally no way anyone can trace anyone else down by IP addresses for the most part.

Now a coffee shop or something like that where they purchase a bunch of IP addresses to guarantee those lines of service, those are static, meaning they are their constant address.

The only way they can block someone is to block that email address. Everyone here has an email address and you know how easy it is to just go make a new one. I have 6. One for online purchases, one for business, one for logging off and on my computer, one for my Samsung account, one for FB too, and one for only friends and family.

I have live.com, gmail.com, yahoo.com, my provider.com, and more. They aren't all on the same service. It's easy to create new ones simply by adding a single digit.

Wild woman - I didn't know that's why it changed. Yeah, they used to thank you for reporting, inform you if you've been reported or pulled, invite you to edit a post before getting it pulled, communicate when there were problems. It's very different now.

There are moderators, but not full time. I don't know how their process works. I know they look at things that are reported. It doesn't look like they actively look for any problems, or if they do, they don't find them all of the time.
Because they are not full time, 24/7/365, you will see an influx on holidays, weekends, later at night and the like when they are not online. It can be reported by anyone here but it doesn't seem to get looked at until later.

I've been here about a year. Things have changed in the last few months. Trolls are allowed to stay up longer than in the past. I've seen more swearing than ever before.

Why should mamapedia block out the abusers? It's creating a buzz right? That means money to them. Just like publicity, any publicity is good publicity, right?

I've heard about people being harassed here. I wonder just how much harassing the accuser has done and is playing victim.

I don't care if people have multiple accounts. Is there anything in the agreement you sign when opening an account about not having multiple accounts? If they are breaking the rules, then let mamapedia handle it. Let it be on their conscience if they have multiple accounts. If you want to be the moderator of the board or change the rules, buy the company or open your own board. Otherwise? Live your life and stop worrying about what others are doing. Keep your nose on YOUR plate. Does it matter what other people have on their plate? No.

Heck, it seems that I'm a multiple account as I've agreed (glad-handing was the comment, I believe) with one poster too much and now I'm her. People are really paranoid and have a lot of time on their hands.

I wish they would remove the trolls. That poster yesterday was a real piece of work.

Who knows?
Thing is? Bottoms line?
They just don't care about trolls, profanity, multiple accounts, stalking, harassment, etc.
That's been proven.
The real bottom line is the ONLY way they make money? Advertisers.
Maybe the drama is good for them.
