Does It Bug You When You Get Emails That Are Complete Lies?

Ugh, I get so many emails from a couple of my family/friends that are always totally untrue. Typically they are about Obama and something he did that is not true whatsoever. I reply back to them with a link from snopes.com (a site that tells you what is fact or fiction) that tells them what they just forwarded to tons of people is not true at all. They ignore my email and keep sending me these emails!! It bothers me when people just believe what they see in an email!! Anybody can say anything and they believe it and forward it!!

Are you one of those persons that believes what you read in an email and forwards it? If so does it not bother you that what you just sent to all your friends may not be true? Also, if you are one of these people, why can't you take a sec and look this up first to see if that email is true?

What can I do next?

No, because I don't get any emails like that. Regardless, any emails I get, I have my "preview pane" open so I can *see* what its about without actually OPENING it. So if its junk or spam or just b.s., then I just delete it. No sweat off my brow. =)

it does bug me...there are even ones that say " this is confirmed by Snopes", and you go to Snopes and find out the whole email is untrue or misleading

the ones I was getting from friends were mostly about computer viruses, or kidnappings, talk about spreading fear...

they went away after everyone got on Facebook.

When my FIL was in the habit of forwarding along every ridiculous e-mail anyone ever sent him, my husband told him that if he didn't stop, he'd block him from his e-mail list. And he did. Only after his dad had to call to follow up on something logistical did my husband say "no I didn't get it, I blocked you. Stop spamming me." His dad hasn't forwarded us anything dopey since then.

I would reply to those people with "please don't forward things to me. If you continue to do so, I will have to block you" and see what happens. Then block them if you must.

The Obama fanatics say that all of the things that are negative about Obama are lies and all the positive things about him are the truth.

Sounds like you are a Obama fanatic. Remember OMG. (Obama Must Go!)

If Obama was as good as he thinks he is he would have brought a Romney/Massachutes type recovery to the US economy. OR he would have brought a Reagan type recovery to the US economy.

If he was as good as most of his blind followers think he is, he wouldn't have cancelled the christian prayer breakfast, and he wouldn't have increased the US deficit by 50% in his first 3.5 years in office. Oil was less than $40 a barrel when Obama took office, now it is over $100. If you take the entire 8 years Bush was in office unemployment was less than 6%. Since Obama has been in Office it has been over 8%. Obama said he wouldn't seek a second term if he didn't reduce the deficit. What a liar.

Good luck to you and yours. I hope someone opens your eyes.

It bothers me sometimes. What bothers me more is when they aren't willing to hear what I have to say. I mean, they can speak at length about whatever, but if I want to turn it into dialogue, then I'm a troublemaker.

Are you bothered by just the emails with false info about Obama or all political candidates including Romney? Cuz you should see the loads of similar emails being passed around about Romney and the Republican party too!

I was reading a few of these responses and noticed even here there are some half truths and the like. Like the response that mentioned that the price of oil was $40/barrel when Obama took office and is now over $100.This caught my eye because I remember the gas prices the summer of the election were high. So I checked. Yes, it was low when Obama took office, but earlier that year (before the election) it was the highest it had ever been:

From wikipedia:
"The price of oil underwent a significant decrease after the record peak of US$145 it reached in July 2008. On December 23, 2008, WTI crude oil spot price fell to US$30.28 a barrel, the lowest since the financial crisis of 2007–2010 began, and traded at between US$35 a barrel and US$82 a barrel in 2009.[3] On 31 January 2011, the Brent price hit $100 a barrel for the first time since October 2008, on concerns about the political unrest in Egypt.[4]"

I know wikipedia is not always right, but that fact is pretty well cited. Here's the link if you want to check the citations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_of_petroleum

Anyway, I'm not saying this to defend Obama. I actually think the price of oil has little to do with him or any president. I just wish people would stick to the facts and not make stuff up or take it out of context--regardless of what side of the aisle they are on. Even if we stick to the facts, it's not like there's one right answer. People have different opinions and values, so we'll still always have disagreement. I'd just rather disagree about real stuff rather than stuff that's been twisted or made up.

Hahahahaha!!!!! There is one poster who responded to you who is famous for posting lies about Obama here on mamapedia. I am neither for or against Obama, but I think lying about him to further an agenda is filthy. And yes, twisting words to make it seem more like the truth is an all out lie. Pathetic.

In answer to your question, YES, I do check the validity of the claims that I do read. Most of the time I know it's going to be some idiot's opinion and I delete without reading. Oh, and I NEVER forward.

Yeah.
I have to stop talking/emailing/texting to a few old friends during elections.
The rabid mis-information and out right foaming at the mouth is just crazy.
It doesn't matter what side it is.
I don't know what causes people to disengage their brains (political robo calls?) but I wish there was a cure for it (besides having to wait for election day).
I still think we should be able to get through the entire process of campaigning/running in 6 weeks.
There's way too much money being wasted on this nonsense.

No one sends me chain emails, I have made it clear I don't like my computer contaminated with such rubbish.

On the subject of these emails, typically they are lies about both sides not just Obama. I can only assume your family dynamic is you are the Obama supporter and they are not?

What I find kind of amusing is you are upset about the lies, not the fact that most of those chain emails are riddled with malware.

You are playing tit for tat. Why don't you just ask them not to send you any BS e-mails. Pick up the phone if necessary. If it continues, just delete them. Going back and forth frustrates you and gets them going obviously. Why are you allowing tthese people to have such power over you S.? It doesn't bug me, 'cuz I wouldn't allow it to, you shouldn't either.

I don't even bother, responding to it.
If a person is like that, or is always on their soap-box, so what.
Or, I just send it to the "junk mail" folder.
Why get my panties in a bunch, over it.

Typically, I do not have friends that do that anyway.
Some relatives of mine, are like that however.
So what.
They are that way, I know it, it is irritating, and I do not have to respond or get into an e-mail repartee or debate about it.
It is just a waste of time.

And ya know... some people are the type that just forwards ANYTHING to everyone all the time, regardless what they think of it. I call these people "fowarding junkies." Because, they just hit the "forward" button automatically and then send it to everyone on their e-mail list.
They don't reflect on it.

I snopes every email I get and if it's not true I always email my findings back to the sender with the snopes link. What really bothers me is that I'm not getting emails from people that say on the bottom "verified on snopes', as if that is going to change my thought process. So I go on snopes and find out that the email is false and send back with the snopes link. People are so dumb sometimes.

I get a load of similar style emails from my StepFIL. If I can tell that it's a political email, I just delete it. If I open it and find that it is, I delete it. It is rare that I get a decent forward from him that isn't political. Sometimes, I just delete every forward he sends me. I have no desire to even read it for a minute.

Does it bother me? Yeah, but only for the time that I waste to hit delete. I could never tell him to stop forwarding me things. He'd take it WAY TOO personally and stop talking to me. Yep. He's really that mature. So it's not worth it.

I don't get emails like this, but I see it on Facebook all the time. I now have Snopes on my favorites bar in my browser so I can get to it quickly. I just comment on the status like this: "This is false: <link>"

When I did get these in emails, I would hit reply all with the above. After doing that a few times one of two things happens. Either they quit sending them, or they quit sending them to me. Either way, I quit seeing them!

If someone sends me a lot of these, then I reply w/ the Snopes links. Otherwise, I ignore them. If I think the person will respect it, I ask them to stop. If they don't stop when asked, I MIGHT reply all with the Snopes links.

The ones that have bugged me the most were the ones about missing chidlren that weren't missing. At least I don't see the ones about Microsoft giving away money anymore.

Not that it will change the mind of anyone who is too emotionally invested in their viewpoint to examine of they are subject to confirmation bias (we ALL are), but Snopes is not affiliated politically and has repeatedly been lauded as a reputable source by VARIOUS organizations:

My MIL must have your email... :) She forwards stuff ALL THE TIME to my husband. I think he just deletes/ignores all of her emails unless it's one she actually wrote to him. Even if you send them what the true information is, you're not likely to convince them. They'll probably just assume that the site you got your info from is directly influenced by the group/person the email was about. Just don't open any more emails from them unless it is an actual written email. Good luck!

Mallory, All reputable newspapers run their their stores by ALL important or well-known people before they print them. It is the person's right to verify that they got their quotes down correctly before they print them.

I was quoted in a book once, and I was sent those few lines before the book was published to verify that they had gotten their facts right.

I use Snopes too to look up things that are bizarre, don't make sense or seem like hyperboly. Love that site! Some people just want to believe something so much that they won't accept the truth even when it slaps them in the face. That's part of what's wrong with this country but I digress... I was having the same problem so I told people that I was getting too much email and that I had to limit it somehow so I asked people not to forward or send things that did not originate with them (they wrote). Since I sent it to everyone and was very polite, almost apologetic, no one took it personally. Then, in private, I told the 3 or 4 people that I know send me only really funny jokes or REAL news stories I might be interested in that it was okay to keep sending me those things. They understood exactly the kinds of things I was trying to avoid recieving! That eliminated 99% of the chain letters, recipe circles, political right/left wing biased view points, uber religious emails, etc. That said, 1 lady I work with that is old enough to be my grandmother still sends me crazy emails all the time. I don't have the heart to say anything to her - love her - so I make an exception and just hit delete!

Here here, S.!

My FIL sends these to my husband all the time. Husband just keeps sending them back with the appropriate link from Snopes.

I get some alarmist ones (usually about scammers, etc.) and always check it out first before forwarding, and even then, I try to think about who I'm forwarding it to. Is it already common sense? Are they a person who is going to appreciate it, or will it just get them upset? I have about two or three people I might forward political stuff to because I know they are interested-- the rest of the people on my email contact list... not so much.
