Wondering if anyone had/have a hiatal hernia. I found out through a endoscopy that i have a small one and wondering if that is what my problem is. It feels really tight at the base of my esophagus and that I can't eat. It has been since the mid of Feb since dealing with this and have lost 20lbs. I have had tests done and blood tests and that is the only thing to show up and now i keep having spasms i can feel them all the way down to the part that they get to just before your gallbladder.I have had an ultrasound of my gallbladder and they said it was fine. I am worried and afraid something bad is going to happen with me especially that I can't eat. Anyone have problems like mine?

You should eat small meals several times a day. Stick to soft type of
foods. That being said, you should be able to eat with a small hiatal
hernia.

I have one and it was diagnosed when I was 17 (now 32). I wish it caused me to lose weight but it hasn't. The only problem I have is reflux. I take pepcid every night and that will generally take care of it. There are some times when I have to take tums on top of that.

I have never considered having a hard time swollowing being a part of it. I do somethimes have a hard time swollowing but have always thought it was do to my very enlarged tonsils.

My mother had a hiatel hernia, she always complained of stomach aches and burped all the time, but never complained of trouble swallowing. Sometimes if the scalene muscles (the muscles on the side of your neck) are very tight it can affect your swallowing.

I have a large hiatal hernia. I also have spasms and take Dicyclomine 20 mg per day or as needed. I had a cat scan of my stomach and it showed diverticuloses so you need to stop the spasms. I do not think an ultrasound would show this. I also had tighting at the end of my esophagus, mine was enflamed. I was told to eat soft food until I felt better, custards , jello, pudding, yogurts. NO fried or fatty foods, no butter. keep away from acidy foods. If you can drink a breakfast drink to get some calories in you. Take walks and start working out, it helps to lose a little weight when you have this. It has helped mine some. If your thin already go back to the Dr. and tell him what is going on, get a new Dr. if you have to. I feel your pain. I hope you feel better soon. Lots of web sites for this also. Check them out.

Hi K.
I do have a hiatal hernia, but also had achalasia, which was a closure of the sphincter muscle. I got to a place where I could not always swallow water never mind swallowing food. Depending on the nerve involved the pain radiates up or down. Any esophageal pain can feel as if you are having a heart attack. My biggest advice to you is to eat slowly, and try to figure out the triggers for the indigestion if it is a problem. Some people can't eat nuts and lettuce, as it gets caught in the hiatal hernia. I have not been able to eat raw apples or raw carrots since the surgery for the achalasia. The other advice is to eat small meals numerous times throughout the day. Try not to loose too much weight. I was only 2 pounds from not being able to have surgery because of the weight loss.
My pain would radiate up into my jaw and my ear would ache. It was so intense that I thought I was going to die. The surgery was 25 years ago. I never want to do it again, and had a lot of angina pain after that, yes, it seemed as if a mac truck was running over me. I read somewhere that is a lack of greens, so I did the greens thing. I liked them better than taking meds. and it worked after about 3 months. When I turned 40, 4 years later I had a set of twins, they will soon be 20.
Write me--esophageal spasm is because the muscles are not moving the food, fluids down your esophagus correctly. OK so I know more about this than most people care. Would love to discuss this
God bless you with good medical professionals

what did the dr say? Do you need surgery for it. I remember my grandma had it, but she was able to control it with diet. She was also on meds. Certain things would "set" it off. For example - she could not eat bananas. She always said it felt like her throat would close up. Talk to the dr and see if you need surgery or do you need to see a specialist or a dietician. Good luck!

I have had mine since I was in seventh grade I also have GERD really bad I had been taking a prescription ant acid pill but just stopped taking them about 3 months ago and have been doing fine I just take Zantac when needed. When I would have a flare up it would fill like I had a ball right there at the base before your stomach and would hurt. I would try taking something over the counter for acid and see if that doesn't help you out some. I know that they won't do surgery unless it is absolutely necessary. Also try to stay away from chocolate, caffeine, tomato paste stuff for a few weeks to see if that might also help you out some. God bless I know how you feel.
