Why don't you look at shelters? Much better than a breeder. I know a few weeks ago some of the shelters had a bunch of dachsie's rescued from a puppy mill.

this is the Midwest Dachshund Rescue. I am sure if you contact them as well they will tell you about reputable breeders. Most really awesome breeders do rescue for their own breeds.

Below is the link to the Daschund Club of America. If you go to the "Breed Info" tab on the website, you can follow the link to contact them & find breed club approved breeders in your area. Buying a puppy from a responsible breeder will give you health & genetic background, a mentor in the breed to help you raise your puppy properly, and a greater confidence that the dog you bring home is typical to the breed standard in health & temperament. Responsible breeders are affiliated with their national clubs, and work hard in their breeding program to produce healthy, well-tempered dogs. A responsible breeder never wants to see one of their dogs in a shelter, & will take them back at any age, for any reason.

Additionally, MartyMomma's suggestion of contacting the Midwest Dachshund rescue is fabulous. Breed rescues work to keep dogs out of shelters, & often have many dogs looking for homes. They are typically home-fostered, & much care is taken to match the correct dog to the perfect family.

Shelters are a place of last resort. As S. B. commented, if they have puppies, they typically come from puppy mills or back-yard breeders, who do not follow health clearances or breed for correct health & temperament.

Any time you get a dog from a shelter, you are rolling the dice. You don't know the health history, you don't know the genetics, and they take very little time to evaluate the individual dogs and match them to the correct family. Basically, if they will let you have a dog, they will let you pick out the one you want, whether it is a good fit for your family or not.

Hope this helps, good luck in your search!
