Hi, I'm due this Fall with baby #3. My NEW OB is Dr. Carrie Sloan. Does anyone know anything about her? I'm delivering at St. Marks in SLC area but none of my friends know anything about it. Has anyone had or heard of any experiences with delivery at this hospital?

So What Happened?

Sorry I never you let know what happened. I delivered my baby 18 months ago at St. Marks and another surprise baby a few months ago. Both experiences were great. I love St. Marks. The staff is friendly and professional. The hopsital was clean. I would highly reccomend this place for delivery.

I don't know Dr. Sloan, but I had my first baby at st marks and I loved it. All 3 kids were at different hospitals and st marks was by far my favorite.

I had my first daughter there just over two years ago with a midwife.

It was nice. The nursing staff was great and very supportive of my natural-childbirth desires.

I wasn't thrilled with the nursery staff. The nurses were all kind and competent. They just have really strict regulations that bugged me. One hour after my daughter was born, despite her being perfectly fine and healthy and my trying to breastfeed her for the first time, the nursery staff was pounding on the delivery door demanding that she be sent to the nursery. I think I should have had a bit more time with her.

Then the babies are rounded up every morning to be taken to the nursery for pediatrician rounds. There's no way of knowing when your pediatrician will come around and check your baby, so you have to just wait until whenever that happens to get your baby back. Could be one hour, could be several. Of course, you are welcome to go and be with your baby in the nursery, but I didn't feel well enough to go.

Then again, those things may not bother you. Some moms are happy for the baby to go to the nursery so they can get a little rest or take a shower. So it really just depends on your preferences.

Good luck!

I delivered my first at St Marks 4 years ago and had a good experience. My pregnancy was high risk so I really liked that they had the ability to take care of all my needs and my child as well. The recovery rooms were a bit on the small side. THe staff was helpful and did a great job taking care of me and my daughter!

I love St. Mark's Womens Center. I delivered both my daughters there (Apr. 2002 and Aug. 2004). The care I recieved from the staff was amazing. As a vegetarian, the food left A LOT to be desired, but that's partly me, not St. Mark's. Good luck.

I agree with Maren's statements on the natural childbirthing and the nursery staff too. I had a doula nd tried to deliver naturally and I heard all the midwives were outside cheering me on with my VBAC natural birth! However my experience at St. Marks was WAY better than my first at SL Regional so I would definitely recommend St. Marks.

I had Dr Sloan deliver although she was not my primary OB. She was fantastic, great sense of humour and definitely in charge of my very fast delivery of an hour. The hospital and nurses were very good and efficient. My only gripe were the nursery staff. They were very regimented and the staff were not overly friendly. Our discharge nurse was very abrupt and insensitive, luckily this was my third so a lot of what she said went over my head!
I have also delivered at Alta View where you don't see any staff and have a hard time asking questions. To be fair they were very short staffed when I was there. My preference would be St Marks as it was cleaner, better layout and they didn't push us out the door on the day of our discharge!
Good Luck!

I don't remember Dr Sloan, but I had my 3rd child at St. Mark's. It was fantastic. Great hospital. I went with the midwives in the women's center. They took pictures of my daughter and posted them on their newborn baby webpage. Anyone who knew the date she was born could go look at the picture--labeled by first name and last initial.

Of the 3 hospitals I've given birth at, St Mark's was my favorite. ...and there's a Marie Calendar's right across the street if you need some celebratory pie!!

I went there for a couple of things (not pregnancy related) about 5 years ago and liked it. the staff was friendly, prompt and I felt like the hospital was well kept. A good girlfriend of mine had her babies there, as well as my doula has delivered babies there, and they've all loved it. I've never heard anything negative. If you're insurance is St. Marks, you're probably covered under the University of Utah. I just had my last up there and it was WONDERFUL. Our baby was in the NICU for a couple days, and I'm so glad that she never had to be transferred to another hosptial. Thats one thing to think about, becuase you never know what can go wrong. And I've heard of your doctor's name and want to say someone recommended her to me, but I can't remember! Good Luck with everything!

I would also recommend St. Mark's. Delivered my first baby their and it was a very nice hospital. My doctor at the time was a co-worker of Dr. Sloan so I have met her. My sister-in-law had her 6th baby with Dr. Sloan and she seemed to like her. The only personal experience I have with this doctor was when I went through a miscarriage and my doctor was out of town. She was very personal and helpful in my situation. Even though I don't have a delivery experience with her, I did like her as a doctor for my circumstances.

I think that whether Dr. Sloan is a good doctor for you has a lot to do with what you want from your birth. Figure that out and then ask her how she normally wants things handled, if they match up then good, if not, switch providers.

St. Marks is a 'nice' hospital, clean and well cared for, but it is not my favorite. Primarily the problem I have with them is the postpartum care. They seem to be the most likely to take babies out of their mother's arms and I haven't been very impressed with their nursery or NICU policies. They seem to be more focused on the staff convenience than what is best for the family. Just my experience and there are absolutely exceptions to this rule, but you have to have the right provider and ask clearly for what you want.
There you go $.02 from a birth doula!
