well my daughter is going to be three in june, and her therapist would like for her to start school, i want to put her in school, but i know she is quite a handful, and she is not used to being with anybody but me and her daddy. and my husband doesnt want her to go beacuse hes scared that they will be mean to her. i know they will give her therapy there. i guess im kinda worried she'll drive them crazy there.

What can I do next?

I am not sure what c/p is but our Eldest boy started school at 3. He has a speach and social delay. He stayed at home with me and we did not take him to daycare either.....I was worried to because he was not fully potty trained then having just just started wearing underpants. However, after the first week had adjusted very well to school. He normally goes Mon-Friday and even rides the school bus ( the bus has a driver and aide to help the children, make sure they get on and off where they are suposed too). Morgan attends Howard Early Learning Center, its like Elementry school, just more specfic for speach delays and such...The best advice I could give is to call your local school district and find out what programs are avaiable, also mentioning your child needs.

My daughter has mild CP. She is a hemiplegic. She is in school now. Of course she is 11 yrs old. But when Chauntal was your daughter's age, I let Region 18 push me into inrolling her into an early childhood program. Big Mistake! I took her into a classroom and then sat outside and listened to her Cry. It was horible. I thought that she would eventually calm done. She never did. I took her out after only a week. A week of crying--both her and me. We waited two years and when she was older, she went to pre-k. No tears. She needed time to mature. With her CP, Chauntal is already developmentally behind. She needed to grow into the idea of school. While I don't think school is good at this age, especially if she mainly exposed to you and your husband. I do recommend getting her involved with a play group. Being around other children who do not have CP is great therapy. Another thing to consider is trying to get involved with the Scottish Rite. They have helped me with a lot. At NO cost to me. All you need is a sponsor. A shriner or someone else.
Hope this is helpfull--R.

I've worked with a family w/a child w/cp since 2001. I've gone w/her to school. The school wanted to put her in special needs but mom wanted more than a babysitting service for her. So she got her in life skills. Teachers and Aides have to attend classes and conferences with the parents and so on. Find out about sending a private nurse with her if you can. This way you can have a pair of trusted eyes on her a while she is in school. The lady I work for is a parent liason for the school district we are in and she knows a lot of recourses for parents w/kids w/disabilities. If you like I can have her contact you with some information.
Visit my page www.myspace.com/IJNWellness there is a link to a site called Disability Services of the Southwest. If you've never heard of it, you can get many services for your child if she qualifies. Good Luck and she'll be fine!!

Neither of my children have any disabilities but I do have strong feelings about pushing our children too fast. I personally feel 3 is too young. I feel society is making them grow up far too quickly and they don't get alot of time to just be kids anymore.

I think the playgroup for socializing is a much better idea.

my son does not have cp but does have another disability. he started school when he was 3 too. you do not have to worry about your child being mistreated or a handful. she will be placed in ppcd, preschool for children w/disabilities. the teacher and her aids are trained to care for these children. she will not be in a regular classroom although there may be some time in which they are integrated. ie- recess, gym, etc. she will receive therapy at the school and they will either do it in the classroom or take her to the therapist's office somewhere in the school. it has been wonderful for my son. and although i hate sending him off every year in aug. it has been the best thing for him. you can go visit the classroom before you make your decision. i did, and that is what helped me to decide to put him in. the teacher was great, understood my concerns/nerves, and made me feel more comfortable leaving him.

good luck!

When she turns 3, she should qualify to attend public school. The PPCD program is intended for kids like your daughter so they know what they are doing and how to handle her disability. My nephew also has mild CP and has attended public school since he was three. No one has ever been mean to him. These are professional educators. They are very patient and knowledgable about all of the students.

I don't know what c/p is, but I have a child who is speech and receptive delayed. I put him in pre-k and he loves it. He goes to an Early child developement or ECH class with kids with other disabilities. Occasionaly he visits the regular Pre-k classes and they are actually nicer to him than the delayed kids. It has been nice because they help teach the basic social skills and that makes things so much better at home. Don't be afraid. If you know your school has a good program then go for it.
