Doc Doesn't Seem to Care... What to Do?

My 8mo little boy has been in and out of the doctor's office alot over the past month or so. At 6mo he had the stomach flu, got rid of that, then a few weeks ago he got croup and an ear infection. I thought we had cleared everything up, then this past Friday he gets thrush. We saw his primary doctor on Friday, but the rest had been with another doctor, that, up until today, I liked. Today the trush looked worse, even though he's been on the medicine since Friday. Plus the cough and stridor (sounds like he sucks in air) came back over the weekend. So I made an appt with the other doctor, and while we were waiting for her to come into the room, I had him laying on his back on the table and I was tickling him. He would laugh, then stop breathing for a few seconds, turn bright red and then start with the cough/stridor. Once I picked him up he was fine. I laid him back down to see if he would do it without being excited, and it happened again after a minute or so. I told the doctor this, and all she said was the thrush could be irritating his throat. WHAT? We switched medicine to get rid of the trush, and I left with a knot in my stomach. I feel like there is something else going on outside of the thrush. I called and left a message for his primary doctor to call me back, but I don't know what the next step would be. They both said his lungs sounded clear, but that was when he was sitting up. Any advice, Mamas? This is the first time I've been dissatisfied with my son's doctors, so I'm not really sure what to do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I ended up getting to talk to the on-call doctor at All Children's. She really listened to me and how my son was breathing, even had me lay him flat to recreate the sounds he made in the doctor's office. She said he may have a lingering infection, which the new meds should take care of. Or since he already has acid reflux, she recommended uping his dosage since he's gone through a growth spurt lately. So I'm going to try that. He seems fine while he's playing, I'm more worried about him sleeping tonight.

if you feel like something is wrong, take him to the ER or take him to another dr. doesn't mean you have to switch drs. just get another opinion. my mom went to the ER not being able to breathe, etc. They told her that it was pulled chest muscles. They took x-rays and everything. she came home with pain killers and could hardly walk into the house she was in so much pain. we took her back to the ER the next day. She had pneumonia. She was admitted to the ICU it was so bad. She almost died. And all because the 2 dr's in the ER didn't see anything on her lungs. So I would definitely go see another dr. don't worry about anyones feelings.

Being on antibiotics creates an environment where the yeast that are in the body already are able to thrive. So if he's on antibiotics consistently and repeatedly for a long span of time then I would be surprised if he didn't have a yeast rash in his diaper or thrush in his mouth.

Feed him yogurt but it has to be live active cultures, and plain yogurt would be best because yogurt with fruit could be acidic for his mouth. If he's on other solids, no corn products. No cornstarch baby powder. Yeast feast on corn and sugary foods and acidic environments. If he has the yeast on his fanny, you can apply Lotriman cream directly to the rash before applying diaper cream.

If he's coughing it's probably left over from the croup and ear infection. The coughs can linger for a few weeks without it meaning he's still sick. That's why the doctor said his lungs sound clear. A productive cough means he's clearing the phlegm and it's not entering his lungs. So yes, the doctor can say that his lungs sound clear and he still has a cough that to you sounds rattly.

But if you're not satisfied then getting a second opinion is appropriate. It's far better to listen to your instincts and be reassured with a second opinion than to find out later that you should have gone with your instincts and didn't.

I say follow your gut momma... I had a dr. once who, every time I would take him in she would say... hmmmmm... haven't seen that before, let me consult with my colleagues.... WHAT? YOU are the doctor.. aren't you? How many times do you need to ask your class mates what they think it could be before you give the right diagnosis?

Nope I switched my doctors and have not looked back since. Follow your instinct. Get a second opinion.

If you feel deep down there is something else going on then get a new doctor and do what it takes for you and baby to be taken seriously. You should have left feeling like things were going to get better, not leaving with a knot in your stomach.

Find a new doctor and schedule the appointment. Get as many opinions as you need to feel better about all this.
And if it is necessary then go to the Urgent Clinic and see what they say.

Be firm and dont give up.

Don't lay him down, the mucus is clogging his airways.

If you are nursing, you should be treated for Thrush/yeast infection too. On your nipples. Otherwise, your baby will still have Thrush or it will return and go back and forth between you and him.

He could still have his Croup illness or it came back or a secondary illness occurred.

Does he have runny nose? That can cause post-nasal drip, and down the throat, and can cause coughing as a result.
And the mucus getting stuck in his throat.

If his breathing is impaired, then that needs to be checked.
His lungs.

Get a 2nd opinion.

Try laying him down as you did, while the Doctor is there observing, and see if your son does that again... stopping breathing and turning bright red and coughing.
They won't know, unless they SEE it, happening.

Croup, also constricts the airways/throat. Hence the seal bark coughing sound.

Just an FYI about thrush. It is a form of yeast, and it is quite common to get some type of yeast infection after taking antibiotics because an inbalance of bacteria and yeast has been created by the meds. My older son kept getting a yeast rash every time he took antibiotics, so his ped recommended having him eat yogurt while taking them. It worked! Not sure it would work if he already has thrush, but you could ask your ped. Also, many people take probiotics, and that would really help.

Good luck! Hope your little guy feels better soon :-)

See another doc. See if they can take xrays. My little guy got hit with so many viruses in a row and started having breathing trouble. First two docs claimed it was asthma. I wasn't settling for that answer. Took him to the ER with breathing trouble and finally a doc agreed to do xrays. He ended up hospitalized with pneumonia. Show up at Urgent Care, ER and push until they do some tests and xrays.

the dr could be right. If the throat is inflamed, the airway becomes much smaller. It makes sense that laying on his back and laughing would further close the airway. Elevate his head when he sleeps to prevent this. If you are still concerned, I would go to an urgent care clinic and share your concerns.

you need to report this doctor to the medical board, a child should not stop breathing simply because he was laying down, you need to take the child to a different doctor, it sounds like the child might have other problems that this doctor doesnt want to be bothered with looking at. doctors are like ex boyfriends, if you dont like them, get rid of them. you are paying THEM, its your money that you are giving them , they should be perfectly willing to work with you, if not, then they dont need your money.he might have allergies, could be to the medication that he is on. ask questions and demand answers

If this persists I would take your little one to an allergist...sounds silly I know. However we had this same thing going on for almost 4 years with our son and our pediatrician who is great just said he had a low immune system. I had that gut feeling like there was more to the story... We made an appointment with an allergist and sure enough our little man has asthma, an outdoor mold allergy, and a CORN allergy?! We could have never in a million years figured that out on our own! We have now adjusted his diet, gotten him on allergy medication, and really watch his asthma. It has made a world of difference! Good luck! :)
