So What Happened?

Thanks everyone, I willl keep all of your suggestions in mind. I have been heavily dilluting his juice with water because he simply refuses to drink just plain water. I will keep doing the water/juice thing until Im down to all water.

Do not put sugar in it. Part of the problem now is that he's used to sweet drinks. You want him to drink plain water because it is the healthiest way to keep hydrated. I suggest that you gradually add more water and less juice until you're down to all water.

I put more water than juice. Say I put 4 oz or water in his sippy cup then I will just put 1/2 oz of juice. Just for the flavor. That way he is basically getting more water than anything else. And slowly put less and less juice.

Let him have a sip from your cup. Babies always want what mom (or dad) has! Playing with water is another good way to get him to drink some, fill a large bowl halfway with water and give him serving spoons and measuring cups to play in it with. Sit with him and get him interested by taking sips from the measuring cups, he will want to copy you. Of course it is important to always supervise water play to prevent drowning. Another fun thing is to lick ice, although that can be a choking hazzard, try feeding him little bits of crushed ice. My kids like to play with and lick ice on hot summer days!

Please do not put sugar in the water.
How often does he get juice?
It should only be one 4oz watered down cup a day.
Make sure it is 100% juice and not Kool-Aid or anything like that.
Offer juice only at breakfast and water or milk the rest of the day.

There's no reason to put sugar in water, that's ridiculous. You may as well just give him more juice if you're going to do that. Leave out a sippy of water, and if he is thirsty, he will drink. He should only be having a few ounces of juice, if any at all. Most babies think water is strange when they first have it because it has no taste, and they are used to things having a flavor. If you eliminate the juice, he'll likely drink the water

Just say no to sugar when you can. I'd keep putting just enough juice into the water to give it the flavor he needs.
Also watching Mommy enjoy a cool glass or bottle of water is a good way to make him like it. Usually "monkey see, monkey do" works well. "Yum, yum, that water is so goooood, Mommy was soooo thirsty..."
He's a year old, so I'm sure he understands language pretty well. Always tell him how great that cold drink of water tastes on this "hot" day. You'll soon have him craving water too. Using a straw might be an enhancer as well.

The best way to get your kid to drink water is to a) stop buying juice, and b) to let him see you drinking a big glass of water often. Kids always want to do what they see you doing.

i give my 6 month old water. We are trying to figure out how to use a cup, and around here cups are for water. He doesn't drink it, spits most of it back out when he can actually get it in his mouth and not all over the place, but he gets enough fruit so I don't see any reason to give him juice. My older kids all love water, will ask for it over milk or juice, and they won't drink most pops even if allowed. But I have simply always given it to them. If your son is thirsty he'll drink it, if it's all that is there. So keep offering, and don't give in.

He shouldn't be drinking juice (even diluted) at this age. Milk and water... he will become accustomed to having the "sweet" and will continue to refuse water if he knows there is another option.

Only offer acceptable choices. If he's thirsty, he'll drink what's offered. Keep a sippy of water out at all times and encourage him to take a sip throughout the day. My son is now 3 and we still have a cup of water out for him all day b/c he loves having water. Juice is a treat and milk is for mealtimes only!

Marda is exactly right...no sugar in his water...that is the problem now!! He needs water everyday..it is natures perfect way for hydration!! As Marda says...just keep adding more and more water to his juice...he will get to the point that plain water is just fine with him!!!
We can't always take the easiest way to get our children to eat and drink...if we did they would all be living off of soda pop, chips and hamburgers...and that isn't the way to raise healthy children.
Keep introducing good things to him...fresh fruit...vegetables...etc and he will be the one to reap the benefits from it. ( Sorry I know you didn't say a single WORD about eating habits...I will get down off my soap box now...lol)

I don't think I'd put sugar in the water. REALLY dilute the juice (4:1) until he gets to 100% water, or just put a little squeeze of real orange in there...or GLAM it up with a cool cup, umbrella, crazy straw, etc.

We started giving our boys water at seven months. Just a little, but they've always loved it. If you want him to drink water, stop giving him other options for a couple of weeks. He'll drink the water when he's thirsty. I don't agree with putting sugar in it. That defeats the purpose of water.

I agree with the other Moms who suggests that Baby wants what Mom or Dad have. My daughter started showing an interest at about 7 months. I would give her cap fulls of bottled water or let her try and drink from the bottle of water for kicks while we were outside playing. She seemed to really like it and does pretty well with it in her sippy cup now at 8 months. Mixing water and juice is fine, but I wouln't go the suger route. You could try putting pieces of fruit in the sippy cup to make it interesting...

Yes. DD is 10mos, and I started her on a sippy cup last month, to get the hang of it. I put water in it for her. Now she has it with her snacks. She's starting to drink more and more. Never had any issues.

My son is now 2 and I still have that issue. He will drink it if it is "mommy's water", out of my cup or bottle. Occasionally I get him to drink his own by putting ice in it because he likes the noise it makes. I would do that more when he was younger. I have found he likes to suck on lemons so I will squeeze a lemon in it just as if at a restaurant. I would even let him squeeze the lemon himself so he feels like a big boy.

Exactly what Krista P said. Juice isn't good for anybody. Pure sugar and next to no nutritional value. Stop giving him juice (even if it's watered down) and when he get's thirsty, he'll drink the water.
