Do You Brush Your 1 Year Olds Teeth?

I was watching my friends little girls yesterday ages 1 and 7. I also have a 1 year. When my baby woke up from her nap, I plopped her down on the floor with her tooth brush and lil baby tooth paste and attacked her 8 teeth with it.
The older girl said, "Thats weird, we dont brush my little sisters teeth." And I was like, "Oh, Im sure your mom does, maybe you just dont see her do it." She was like "No, she doesnt even have a tooth brush or tooth paste."
Huh, weird.
Do you brush your baby's teeth? I have done it with all of them the second they got teeth, and even before that, cleaned their gums.

What can I do next?

Absolutely. I wiped her mouth with a wet cloth even before she had teeth. Babies need their teeth brushed from the get-go and most pediatric dentists want to see infants in the 12-18 mo. range for an intital visit. My DD started seeing hers at 10 months for an enamel problem.

I did not start brushing my sons' teeth until they were 2yrs old. They have been going to the dentist regularly since they were 2 and are now 3-1/2 and 5 without every having cavities. We also have a toddler, and I started brusing her teeth on occasion when she just over 1yr old, mainly because she was interested after seeing her big brothers get their teeth brushed. She sits on my lap and holds her mouth open wide and lets me brush her teeth. If she's around when we're brushing teeth and wants hers brushed, I'll do it but I still don't do it regularly.

I think it's a good idea just so they get use to it as soon as possible.

Yes, we begin brushing when I begin suspecting that my child is teething for the first time. It has been shown that brushing helps break down the gums to make teething easier. It also adapts kids to having a tooth brush in their mouths, so they don't fight it as much later. I use non-fluoridated toothpaste and my kids love it!

However, I want to add that my pediatrician encourages tooth-brushing, but doesn't believe it to be necessary until kids are eating solid foods regularly.

Honestly...... No. I know that's horrible but true. I just didn't have the energy to fight with them . I waited untill they showed an interest in brushing. In my defense though, my kids received dental care since they were 1 & I was completely honest & told them I didn't brush. To my surprise , the Hygenist didn't beat me up about it ( think she was shocked , I told the truth). I told her , that I try to practice other good dental habits, to combat the lack of brushing. My kids have never gone to bed with a bottle. I give the crunchy , fresh veggies & apples ( natures tooth brush). The Hygenist told me he had better teeth , than most toddlers , that parents " brush" twice a day. The dentist didn't say a word to me about lack of brushing & said his teeth looked great. Am I just lucky my kids have had great teeth... Probably but I wanted to tell my experience. My youngest is 2.5 now & is an eager brusher.

Absolutely if you don't you could cause a lot of harm. The baby toothpaste is useless though as told to me by several dentists. They say to wait and just put a tiny smidge of regular toothpaste on. The small amount won't harm them if they can't spit it out.

My youngest had a lot of build up and once we started the regular toothpaste it came off.

I am another mom that doesn't. Sorry!
My daughter is 19 months and we brush 'em about once a week...if that. Never with toothpaste. She likes to chew on the toothbrush and do it herself and I am fine with that. She has been going to the dentist since she got her first teeth (6 months). She has gone three times. The dentist say her teeth look great! We just went a month ago, dentist said her teeth looked fine.
Both of my boys didn't really start brushing until they were about 2ish either. Their teeth look fine and only one has a cavity.

I got my daughter her baby toothbrush when she was 11 months old. The PED said they don't really need a toothpaste (even the baby-safe ones) until about 3 or so, just using the brush wet with warm water would do.
DD didn't like the toothbrush for a long time. So, I used my clean finger instead, to gently rub the gums and teeth. It was only when she got about 15 mos or so, when she started understanding the process. She understood the 'monkey see monkey do' when we showed her how we brush. It was only then that she started allowing me to use the brush on her teeth.

I started with my daughter very young since her first teeth came in at 4 months old. Now she brushes with no problem and still lets me help (the dentist suggest I continue to help until she is around 8).

Maybe your friend doesn’t realize that babies get cavities too.

Yup - there was a little brush-thing that fit over my finger I used until they got teeth; once they got teeth I got them a toothbrush and training toothpaste.

I have been cleaning my DD's teeth since before she sprouted any.

I know that some people have lucky genes, and that their kids don't have any issues from not having their teeth brushed... For me, it was more of a matter of getting the good habit started young. I even started flossing her teeth once they were close enough together to need it.

I brushed them with non-fluoride toothpaste from the beginning. Some moms I knew just washed babies teeth with a facecloth instead, which also works.

Yes. When my daughter was almost 1, we started brushing hers. I have been brushing my son's teeth for the last year as well (once daily). He fights me more than she ever did, but oh well...he will get used to it :)

Yes, we use a soft brush and a natural baby toothpaste daily. Once a week we use flouride toothpaste. Once they are 4, I start them on mouthwash (Tom's of Maine flouride for cavities, and Tom's of Maine for fresh breath), plus floss.

I've never had a cavity, nor have my kids. So, fingers crossed!
