Do Nannies Get Paid Vacations?

I would like some input from anyone out there who has a live-out nanny. We never talked with ours about whether she would be paid when we take a vacation and she doesn't work. She will have the week off and I am not sure if I should be paying her for the week or what type of arrangement is proper. Any info on what other's have done would be greatly appreciated.

If you have had your nanny for 12 months or more, you should definitely pay her. If less than 12 months, then it is your decision. It's still earned vacation no matter what job it is.

I had a live out nanny and we paid her for 2 personal days a year, 3 sick days per year and 1 week of vacation the first year. She had an option to be paid during our vacation or hers.

When our nanny was new we did not pay her for our vacation (<6months) but after our first year we did pay her. It was the common practice amongst the moms I knew.

Hi S.,

When I hired my nanny I told her I would pay her 1 week paid vacation after one year and 4 paid sick days per year.

However, if you love your nanny and she is good...to keep her happy I would pay her...in the long run it is worth it.

S., I was a nanny for many years while in college and after. I was always paid for vacation and sick days just as if it were a real job. It seems unfair to not treat an employee this way. Especially as they care for your child every day.
