DIY Hair Color

My friend and I have been coloring our hair with at-home hair color. I've noticed that compared to a salon job, the box hair color doesn't last as long. Or, is this my imagination?
Yes, this is to just cover the gray. We both have black hair, so we share a box, and there is plenty left over.

What can I do next?

I think it depends on what brand you are using and what color you're doing. Are you going light to dark? Covering the gray? I use L'oreal to cover gray and considering my hair salon charges over $100 and the box cost less than $10 and even less when I time it right with a coupon and sale I'd still come out way ahead by using the box. But for me I don't notice a difference.

Try e-salon.com.
That's the service I use. It's salon quality, and mixed by their professionals. Then they just ship it to you to do for yourself.

Mine lasts a good 8 weeks.
$25/time.

Your best bet is to go to a good stylist.

If you do this, your hair will also be healthier.

Splurge on yourself. You don't have to get a cut, blow dry, etc. You can get color and leave with it wet if you are really pinching pennies or like to style it yourself. I pay about $78 (including tip) for color only for my daughter and myself. We are upcharged $10 because we both have long hair. A professional is worth it.

Agree 100%. I only go to salon. My treat to myself. Everyone thinks I do not have one gray hair. Looks so natural. In reality I am completely white. I started turning gray at 18. All my kids started turning gray very early too

I don't think that the box hair coloring last as long as one done at a salon. I've used all sorts of different ones over the past 20 yrs and I now go to my salon to have it dyed.
One thing is you want to make sure your using a good shampoo that is meant for color treated hair. I buy my shampoo at the salon I go to and stay away from the ones you can buy at a store. Since I am the only one using it, it tends to last a long time so I don't feel bad about spending more.

I'll just say that I agree with you! Just based on my own observations-
I've had it done at the salon in the past and lately I've been doing it at home and it just doesn't seem to last as well. I use Garnier at home and like the color, but with more grays coming in, I think I need a professional!

I think it does depends upon the brand and the type of shampoo (as some are more harsh than others) I have been dying my hair for about two plus years or so. I use Naturtint. It seems to hold and lasts even longer if I don't shampoo it every single day. Granted, I now have more grey hairs than ever before (so even a salon can't help that) .. which is why I decided to dye it myself and save some money.
IF you haven't tried Naturtint, give it try. Whole Foods has it on sale at least twice yearly..

good luck
