Discharge During Early Pregnancy

Hi all - I am currently 6 weeks preggers with baby no. 2. Yesterday I experienced some light discharge - brown, not blood red. I called my doctor & he sent me for a sonogram immediatly - both internal & external. Within an hour I saw on the monitor a sack & beating heart - Yeah! I was sent home - told all is well. I continued to experience light discharge througout all of yesterday & then this morning when I woke up & used the bathroom, I discharged a large amount of this brown stuff, more than yesterday. So, before I call the doctor again, anyone ever experience this and if so, any idea what it could be? I'm still a bit nervous even though the doctor said all was well. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

From what i have heard, brown is old blood and it's common to have some. If the blood is red, or you are having cramping, definitely see the doctor. i miscarried, blood was red, and i had cramping with it, like i had to poo or menstral cramps. I nad sac but no heartbeat.

Congrats! Sac and heatbeat means things are going really well so far!So good luck with the rest of the pregnancy.

I experienced this same type of discahrge with my first pregnancy and yes, it is very scary! I was told that this can just be old blood that is still inside you. As long as its not red, than its no problem from my experience. Hope this makes you feel better, I know it can be stressful and scary to see discharge when pregnant.

Hi J.,
During my first pregnancy I experience the same thing. Infact, I spotted on and off for 2+ weeks. First I went to the ER then I went to the doctor and everything checked out fine. They told me that some people spot in the first trimester, but just to be safe they said to not lift anything really heavy or not to have sex until the bleeding completely stopped. I am now pregnant with my second and the same thing happened. For reassurance though I would just check with your doctor. I am sure you are fine. Good Luck!

I have had bleeding in many of my pregnancies. Some didnt fair too well, but there was an explanation, and were unrelated to the bleeding. In 3 of my 6 pregnancies, I had low progesterone. This was diagnosed with my blood work, and easily fixed by taking supplements until the end of the first trimester.

Then in one of my pregnancies, I had a hematoma. What it is, is a collection of blood behind the placenta, that is usually caused when the baby implants. The baby burrows in deeply, diplacing some of the uterine lining (which is implantation bleeding and occurs about 7-14 days after conception) but sometimes when the baby burrows, they will bruise the uterine wall slightly. Then as they grow, the bruise either heals and reabsorbs, or bleeds out to heal. This will be detected by ultrasound, the progesterone detected in bloodwork.

Though I have had miscarriages, the pregnancy I bled the most in was a healthy baby! So while seeing blood is scary, it doesnt always mean something is wrong. Hang in there!

When the discharge is brown it means it is old blood. If it turns red or pink then you have cause to worry. You probably had some bleeding that was old and is now being discharged because of all of the hormones. The most important thing to remember is that the sono showed the beating heart. I had discharge and actual bleeding with my 3rd and 4th pregnancies in my 6th week, and again in my 8th week. With my 4th pregnancy I actually had large clots of red blood at 8 weeks and 15 weeks. I always called the dr right away sure that I was having a miscarriage. I would go for sono's and the baby and plencenta was always fine. I did have to go on progesterone until my 12th week because my level was droping, and that was the cause of the bleeding. Baby #3 is now 19mos and perfect and baby #4 is now 22 weeks and all sono's and blood work look great. Don't worry but do have your progesterone level checked.

Dear J.,

I did have bright red blood, along with cramping and had a miscarriage. When I became pregnant with my daughter I had just what you had and immediately panicked. I carried my daughter full term and she is now 19. I know how scary it can be but just try to relax, rest a little and as long as it doesn't turn bright red with cramping you should be fine. I never had an internal sonogram but maybe that is what caused the larger amount of discharge. Anything messing around up there can cause discharge. I sometimes have a bloody discharge after a pap so maybe that is what caused the excess that just needed to come out. Good luck and keep us posted!!!!

get back to the doctor as many times as you feel uncomfortable with the discharges. You know your body better than anyone else. trust your instincts

Probably nothing to worry about, since you saw a heartbeat. (That's a good sign, clearly!) I had discharge, too. But at this stage, it's a waiting game. All you can do is try to relax (yeah right!) and just go with the flow. Your body will decide what it's supposed to do.

It's a rough time during the first trimester. You spend the whole time hoping and wishing and praying! But there's nothing else you can do, other than accept your powerlessness. :) Drink lots of water, eat as healthy as you can, rest a lot, and have faith in the experience.

Congrats, and good luck! Try not to worry too much now, because there will be a million more things to worry about in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters! Welcome to being a mama...

I'm glad to hear that your dr. said all is well. I had a discharge for the first three months when I was pregnant with my oldest son. It happened around the time when I was due to get my period but my Dr.said all was well and it was, my son is now 23. Good luck

If it gets heavier, if you have pain & cramps, or if the discharge becomes red you need to call your doctor. It sounds like it is implanted and hopefully this DC is from implantation. You are still not in the safe stage, but it is reassuring they did the US (very good dr!). If you do have more, perhaps ask about getting your progesterone level checked if they aren't monitoring already.

Hi, during my third preg, I had bleeding as well. In July, I had my period for 2 wks, I'm generally 3-5 days. I made a drs appt. but couldn't get one until Sept. I had my regular period in Aug. In Sept. the dr. said I was 13 wks, 4 days preg. Talk about shock. When I went for the sono the dr said there was a part of the placenta that hadn't fully attached and blood was pooling behind it. The bleeding was my body's way of protecting itself. It was better to get rid of it than have it in the uterus with the baby. The "periods" and spotting stopped by 4 1/2 months when the placenta fully attached. I'm now 32 wks preg and haven't had any problems. Bottom line is to trust your body. It has been through this before. The drs job is to prepare for the worst case scenario, hence the extra testing. Don't let them drive you insane. You'll know if there is a problem. It is like when you know what your baby needs: food, gas, teething. Trust your instincts. Congrats! Take it easy and don't stress over it. I'm sure everything will be fine.

Since the heartbeat is there, there is nothing to worry about. During the pregnancy of my second baby, about 1/2 way through the pregnancy, I had major bleeding a few hours after my husband and I had some "fun" on the couch. I was a wreck and cried all the way to the hospital. My husband was very comforting. They didn't allow me to view the monitor, during the ultrasound, but when I heard my husband say: "There's the baby! It looks like he's doing jumping jacks!" I was so relieved. My husband & I didn't engage in any sexual activities after that, until after the baby was safely born and we never did it on the couch again! :) Blessings to you and your wee one.
Love, D. xo

I bled the 1st 5 weeks of my pregnancy with my son. Brown discharge is not active bleeding (which would be red) but my problem was an attachment issue & I had to go on blood thinners to save my son. You should call your doctor & have him find out if you might have a low lying placenta. I know how nerve racking this can be, keep the faith & try to remain calm, but call you doctor.

Hi J.,

When I was pregnant with my twins, I experienced the same thing---I was repeatedly getting ultrasounds to make sure everything was okay, and like yourself, things were fine (I was a nevervous wreck because I had experienced several miscarriages prior). Needless to say, I'm five months pregnant and I again had discharge at the beginning for a while. I called the same dr. who reassured me that it's normal for women to have discharge. I was also told that if I'm not saturating a pad with bright red blood not to be alarmed. I guess the brown discharge has something to do with getting rid of the "old" stuff! Best of luck and take care of yourself!

This happened to me in my pregnancy too. Unfortunately there was no explanation and I just had to wait it out. In "What to Expect..." they talk about unexplained "spotting." This happens to many women. I also went for a sonogram and saw my little girl moving around just fine! I am now 32 weeks pregnant without complications. Try not to stress yourself because that could make it worse. Take it easy, rest, and keep an eye on it. If you have cramping (like period cramps) and the spotting gets worse, go to the ER.

J.,

It could be a yeast infection, due to hormone changes. I experienced what sounds pretty similar. They did a swab test in the doctors office, the results came back a day later and they called in a script to treat it. The med's they told me to used - worked great! I didn't have any other signs of an infection.

Hi,
Sounds like implantation discharge, when the fertilized egg is implanting itself into the lining of your uterus. This happened to me with baby #1. I would just say, keep an eye on it and keep your Dr. up to date with info. GL!

Hi J.. I know first hand how scary this is. The same thing happened to me. And on my first ultrasound a heartbeat could not be seen so I had to wait a week and go back! Thank God I was just too early along to see the heartbeat the first time. It was there the second time. I continued spotting (light pink and brown)until about halfway through my second trimester. My doctor told me not to worry as long as it was a small amount and I wasn't having any heavy cramping (I had slight cramping at first, probably from implantation). I now have a beautiful healthy baby girl. I know you can't help but worry, but listen to your instincts. If you feel like you need to be checked out again, call the doctor. At least it will give you a little reassurance. Good luck to you and your baby! J.

I had a bit of brownish discharge for a few days when I was in my first trimester while I was pregnant with my son and it was fine. I would still call your doctor just to let them know, but as long as it's not bright red and does not increase I think you are ok. By the way, what Kelly said about implantation bleeding, this happens before you miss your period, so what you are describing is not implantation bleeding.

Wow, that is early for the doctor to see a heartbeat at 6 weeks! I am currently 3 mths. pregnant with my 3rd. I did not experience any bleeding, but during my 2nd pregnancy at the 10th week I had slight bleeding. I was scared, but nothing happened. It was more than likely a result from implantation bleeding. I have also known women who have bled their entire pregnancy and the baby was perfectly fine. The first trimester for me, is definitely the hardest and the scariest time. Congratulations, I am pretty sure the baby is fine. Have faith.
