Dirty Dishes

It is starting to drive me crazy that at least 10% of the dishes that go into the dishwasher, come out dirtier than they were when I put them in. I rinse before I load and use cascade dishwashing gel, but still my dishes (especially those on the top) often come out with disgusting grit on them. Yuk! Any advice other than to get a new dishwasher?

It is probably a build up of sediment from salts in the water that goes thru the lines. I would contact the appliance company to find out what they recommend to use to flush thru the system.

I had the same problem. I started buying Cascade Complete. That really works great. I even got a new dish washer and thought that that would solve the problem. The new one got them cleaner but was still having a problem. Try the Cascade Complete.

Do the cleaning of the dishwasher as suggested in the other post. Also, run your garbage disposal till it's really clear each and everytime before you run the dishwasher. And check the filter in the bottom of the dishwasher for any debris.

Jet Dry makes a dishwasher cleaner that is sold in a white bottle and they stock it on the dishwashing isle at the grocery store. Its easy too, just put off the plastic tab on the lid, turn it upside down and place it in the silverware rack of your Empty dishwasher and run the dishwasher.

CASCADE COMPLETE!!!! It's the very best, I don't even have to rinse the dishes, except I do have to get off a big clump of food if there is one on the dishes. And it makes your kitchen smell good too.

the top rack is not as hot as the bottom...save the top for glasses and plastics...dishes on bottom. Also, make sure your hot water heater is turned to High.

we had a plummer out at our last house and he said do NOT use the gel packs detergent because it some how clogs the pipes and sticks to the walls of the pipes (not real sure how it all works). He also suggested bleach and water to clear out lines. We only use powder and have never had problems again.
good luck!

I'm having the exact same problem! I just used the Jet Dry dishwasher cleaner, not sure it's helped with the dishes, but the dishwasher sure looks better! I've used the Electrosol pellets and like them, Cascade seems to be making the problem worse.

Hi E.,

I suggest going for a detergent that is formulated not to contaminate the plumbing pipes. That was our problem when I used to have the same issue with our dishwasher. Because the Cascade has these chemicals in it that destroy the good bacteria in the pipes (which keep them running clean), so the grime cannot be washed away adequately and is left on the dishes - I only know all this because we had the same issue, thinking it was just the dishwasher.

Anyway, we now use a natural line of products for that reason!

I was having the same problem with an old dishwasher and started using Amway's dishwashing detergent and it was significantly better. I also saw in the store the other day a product by Jet Dry that cleans your dishwasher. I used it on one that is in good shape and was amazed at the difference in the inside of our dishwasher. I hope this is helpful.

Just mentioned this to my husband, and he reminded me that our "P-trap" wasn't installed correctly which caused water from the disposal to run into the dishwasher (YUCK!). Plumber corrected the problem and then recommended cleaning with bleach. If cleaning it doesn't help, check the connection before you replace the dishwasher.

I had the same problem and the dishwasher even had a terrible odor. A plumber told me to run 3 parts water to 1 part bleach in an empty dishwasher. This really helped our problem! I have also used vinegar to clean the dishwasher (and coffemaker). HTH!

You can also have the dish washer pulled out and cleaned.
From what I understand food debris can get caught in the p-trap AND in the dish washer pump.
My father used to pull our old dish washer out and clean it for my mother when spots showed up on the dishes after cleaning (about once a year).
If you have a plumber look at it he will probably pull it out and clean it while he's looking for the source of the problem.
Older washers tend to have this problem more than newer ones.

I don't know what to tell you but if you find something out let me know bc I have a pretty similar problem. Mine come out looking like the soap did not wash off completely. Little white spots all over them. And moreso on the top with me too.

We had that problem in our old house, a plumber came out and cleaned the filter (it is the little cap normally on the left) you might have to get a screw driver out and unscrew it, clean it out, then run vinegar in an empty dishwasher. Never use the gel packs, or powder- use the liquid stuff.

You should clean your filter about 2-3 times a year and it will keep you dishwasher running good.
