Hello,

I walk past Dinkel's Bakery on Lincoln all the time, but never went in. I need to order a cake for our daughter's baptism and wondered what others thought about their cakes.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your feedback. It looks like I'll have to go into the bakery and have a taste test.

I just wanted to weigh in that we love Dinkels, too - I highly recommend the Atomic cake, which has yummy layer fillings like fresh strawberries, and the frosting is a whipped cream frosting. We got one for my son's 1st birthday and another for my mother in law's 65th birthday and got MANY MANY compliments.

Dinkel's is so so. It's dependable and certainly not BAD. But if you're looking for a very special and tasty cake, I wouldn't go there. Our family has been going to Dinkel's for many many years, and the quality is certainly not what it used to be.
Try Sweet Mandy B's in Lincoln Park. It's excellent. I've had 3 cakes from there... all magnificent. They are on Racine & Webster....

They're terrific. I've gotten cakes for my son's last two birthdays there. I make it a point not to go to them often, because I'm trying to lose weight too. For my son's fourth, they made a Batman sheet cake that was gorgeous and delicious. I researched comparable cakes at Jewel and Dominick's, and Dinkel's was only about $4 more, and it was so much better than anything I could have gotten elsewhere.

I ordered from Dinkel's for my son's first birthday - his name is Oscar and though they didn't have an "Oscar the Grouch" cake - they made one! It was very large - to feed about 40 - 50 people. By the end of the party EVERY crumb was gone - and I had so many compliments on the cake. I highly recommend them - and they were much more reasonalby priced than the other bakeries around.

I actually used to work there! The cakes and pastries are very good! It is a family owned business that has been there for over 80years. I would highly recommend it!

We had some wedding cake from Dinkel's recently and were very impressed with it -- moist, tasty.

I bought my son's 3rd bday cake from Dinkel's this past July. Excellent. They made an adorable rocket w/ his name and the # 3 on it. Just really cute and delicious.

Dinkel's is good. Not outstanding but always very good. I also like Bittersweet on Belmont. It's around Racine as a cross street. I've always gotten very good and different kinds of desserts from them.

I love Dinkels!! It has been our family bakery since I was a kid. I got my first birthday cake from there and now I get cakes for my family there. Yum Yum YUM!

I have tried Lutz bakery, Continental bakery, Swedish bakery and even the famous bakery in Deerfield and always come back to Dinkels. Deerfield I must admit is pretty awesome too.

Go in, smell, taste test. You won't be disappointed.

Dinkel's is what most people think of when they think family owned bakery. Airbrushed art on butter cream frosting with multi-colored jimmies on the side fantastic. If you want something fancier, try someplace else - adore many of the other suggestions posted included Bittersweet - but if you want a true 'bakery' cake, this is the place to go.

Dinkel's is okay, but I love Sweet Mandy B's on Webster. If I could figure out how to burn off the calories, I would buy something there every day!

Enjoy!

I have heard great things about Dinkel's. Never ordered a cake myself though, as like you, I need to just walk on by. I have also heard that the new bakery on Montrose at Winchester is great. I think it is called Sweet Honeybee. I have a flier and their prices are very reasonable.
