Difficulty Transitioning to Table Foods

My child will be one this week. She has 8 teeth and does really well with chewing and swallowing. The problem is that the food does not stay down. She will eat 1/2 a jar of stage 3 foods, like the cereal with fruit, or graduate carrots, then she will gag, and up it all comes. She does fine with thin liquids and the thinner stage 3 foods such as squash. This also happens with crackers. I don't think it is reflux because it would happen with the thinner foods too. It seems like the thicker consistency foods build up in her esophagus then after a certain point come up. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Took my daughter today to the doc for URI/croup. While I was there I asked him about the transitioning of solids/thicker consistency foods. He said the "second" sphincter in the esophagus can sometimes "trap" the thicker foods and in fact hold it until it comes back up. He recommended that I give frequent sips of fluids between bites to help the foods flush through. So I will see. I tried giving her 1/2 of a fruit puff when we got home and she choked up on it. Fustrating. I have to watch others very close. Friends and Family assume because of her age they can give her pieces of food. Daycare even gave her bananas yesterday after they were given instructions to keep her on stage 2 due to her URI/congestion. She threw up the bananas.

I would suggest taking her to her doctor to see if she has some type of obstruction.

Maybe your dauther is not used to the texture of the food you gave her. It happenned to my friend's kid. But just to be safe, maybe you should check with her doctor.

Hello T.. My daughter had the same problem starting at birth with her formula. I had to change her formula 4 times before we got it right. When she started on baby food and cereals, I would just mix her formula (liquid)in with WHATEVER she was eating and it helped with the digestion. I hope this works for you and your baby.

I would say to put her on table food. I pretty much skipped Stage 3 baby food with my daughter because they did not look very appetizing to me so I could not feed my daughter something that I would not eat myself. The smell of most of those stage 3 foods made me gag too! You said she does well chewing and swallowing... she should be fine on table food. You can mush it up some for her in the beginning to get her used to the new tastes and textures. Try it for a few days and see how she does. If she still won't hold anything down, I would call the doctor. Good luck to your little princess!! =)

You may try just feeding her less and making sure to wash it down with liquid. The gag response varies from child to child. If it continues to be a problem with modifications, I'd definitely have her checked out just to be on the safe side. You want to make sure she's able to get enough nourishment without losing too much of it!

Good luck! :-)
