Hello. I am in need of some dieting advice and would appreciate any ideas or words of encouragement. Although, I don't have any medical problems commonly associated with obesity, I am ready to make a change. I was hoping that the group could give me any type of advice: low fat recipes, exercise tips, etc. I've been down this road before, but always lost my will. I am determined right now more than ever. All help would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I would recommend the South Beach diet ... it isn't a quick fix but it teaches you how to eat better and yes you will lose weight even without the excercise ... they have a great online program to help you get started, or simply buy the book and you are on your way!

Hi N.,
The first thing you need to change is the word Diet!! Change your way of thinking "I need to release some weight". For some reason when we say diet our brain goes crazy and says FOOD! If you start to incorporate healthy food such as fruits, vegetables in place of some of the other snacks and side dishes this will truly help. Exercise is a huge benefit. It is as important as breathing. Even if you exercise 20 minutes a day. Start out by walking at lunch. If you have a 1/2 hour lunch take 10 minutes to walk or if you have two 15 minute breaks walk 10 minutes on first break and 10 minutes on the second break. Our bodies were made to move. Make it fun. Exercising doesn't have to be tortureous. There are two books that my husband and I have read that made a difference in our lives. 1. Body by God "Dr. Ben Lerner and 2. Food by God "Dr. Ben Lerner". He teaches that instead of giving up food start replacing processed food that our markets sell for convenience and start replacing it with the natural food that God intended us to eat such as fruit, vegetables and nuts. For dinner make a salad and a small piece of meat. There are alot of great healthy crock pot recipes. The biggest advice I can give you is quit thinking diet and just start eating healthy and moving your body. This will truly make a difference in your life. Do it for you. Do it because it is the right thing to do for your body. When we eat right and exercise we have more self esteem and just feel better emotionally and physically. It's not about being too fat or being skinny because some skinny people are not healthy if they do not exercise and I am speaking from experience. I have been skinny all my life but when I did not exercise I was tired, grouchy and very ugly to my family with my attitude. Then my husband and I got into bike riding and working out. I feel so much better physically and better emotionally. We are doing Ride the Rockies again this year and am training now for it. It is a huge ride about 422 miles in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Make a goal for yourself. Have a vision! This truly helps you to get inspired! When I first rode my bike at age 34 I could not even go a mile and again I am only 96 pounds. Now I can go from an easy 20 miles to 100 miles a day. I am 43 years old now and feel better about me than I ever have. And of course having God in my life is also a huge plus. Take care of you so that you can have a long great life and not be on medications as you get older! Eat the food that our bodies recognize and this alone will make you feel better. What good is it to live a long life if we are wheelchair bound or full of awful medications. Don't get me wrong their are natural circumstances for wheelchairs and medication but some of it is because of the choices we make in our lives. Consequences are something we don't always think about. So I really encourage you to start changing your eating habits by replacing processed foods with natural foods and have that vision of working out. You can do it. Our bodies are made to move!!
Sincerely,
L. Jacobs

Hi N. ...
I JUST joined this group MOMENTS ago, and your's is the first posting I read. I too am/was in your spot at the new year this year... ready for a physical/health change.
I started the South Beach diet on Jan. 2nd and did the 1st Phase of it for the 2 weeks required. I lost 8 lbs. I then started Phase 2 and have pretty much stuck to it (the basic ide- haven't looked at the book since Jan)... and I'm down 21 lbs now. I haven't even added any exercise YET. My MAIN changes were STOPPING soda (I was addicted to Mountain Dew) and all sugars and white foods - bread, regular pasta, etc. It's a MIND SET, really... I will NOT go back to my "eat whatever I want" style, as i WAS NOT happy that way -- I feel in control now, and feel GOOD to pass up the unhealthy, fattening foods... the first 2 weeks were hard (cause I was in the habit of grabbing whatever, whenever).. but after that, it's been pretty smooth and I FEEL so much better. I have 50 more lbs I want to lose... so I HOPE to be at gaol this fall.
GOOD LUCK!! By the way, I just turned 40, widowed, have a 7 yr old daughter, work full time and go to school part time.

I have had great success with ARbonne's www.gofigure8.com check it out than go to my website www.cindyleach.myarbonne.com and contact me for more info. and how to try it out. It was life style change for me. I ate a regular lunch and supper and just replaced my breakfasts. I had there protein shake, fibre shake and there supplement as well as there weight loss chews, peanut butter and chocolate are my fav. it helps satisfy my sweet cravings and they help curb your appetite. I lost 2 lbs per week and continue to lose and feel great. It's a pure safe and botanically based products. SO there's no harmful ingredients. It's good for your body and healthy too.
They also have a detox tea which I love and colon cleanse as well which helps in weight loss and it cleans you out without going to the bathroom every 5 minutes. You can use it and still work. So let me know if you'd like more info.

Yeah for you!! I am in your same situation and I applaud you for saying it outloud that makes it harder to give up. My only advice is to find someone to "get healthy" , diet with. My friend and I used to do that and it was always a good motivater! We would set a goal like 5lbs and whoever got there last would have to take the other one out or buy something while shopping etc. She is really busy and skinny now so we dont do it anymore, but that was always my best motivator. Good Luck,A. ____@____.com

I finally gave in and joined weight watchers. I was hesitant, always thought it was a rather cheesey group. HOWEVER, I've lost 9.6 pound in three weeks. I think it's the pressure of weighing in!

I was where you are at the first of the year. I have had five babies in 10 years, put on bedrest sooner and sooner everytime and after my fifth was born I had let my weight reach 245 lbs!!Then to my surprise the doctors told me to wait 6 months after he was born, which was Feb 1 2006, to do any dieting since the pregnancy took so much. I had a problem though, it was emotional eating. Anytime I had a issue I grab the nearest food and ate it and looking back, most times I wasn't even hungry.Well Christmas time came and went this year and I saw the photos that my mom had taken and I couldn't believe my eyes!! Was that me had I really gotten that BIG!! Something in me changed and I decided that I was not going to do this to myself anymore!! I was going to do this for me. At first I joined the biggest loser club online and they taught me how to eat and that I needed to EXCERCISE!! You must be willing to move your body if you want to lose weight the right way and have it stay off. I have also read Bob Greenes Best Life Diet and I think that is the best book for anyone looking to make a lifestyle change!! There is no magic to weight lose, just burn more calories than you take in. I have lost 30 lbs since the start of this year but I have worked really hard to do it!! I do 5-6 days of 60 minutes of cardio and 3 days of weight training and some weeks I throw in a hour of YOGA. I have never felt so good in my life. Even in high school and I was really skinny, I did not feel this good!! I think it is because I am healthy, I am eating right, taking a vitamins and exercising. If I can do it with five kids so can anyone I believe. Just take it one day at a time and believe in yourself because you are the only one who can do it!!
Please feel free to e-mail at ____@____.com if you want to learn more of how I did it and am still doing it!!

Weight watchers always worked for me and my husband. I went to the class, got the book and he followed along at home. The food is good and they make it easier now to count your daily points. ALso drinking lots of water helps. If you have time to walk or exercise 3 times a week, that helps too. Another tip is when food shopping I buy snacks for my children that I don't like to eat. Fruits and vegetables keep you busy when you need a snack. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
